Merrell “Dean” Allen

Graveside service with military honors for Merrell “Dean” Allen, 87, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, with Pastor Don Ogden officiating.

Mr. Allen died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

He was born May 9, 1923, in Neodesha, the son of Norris T. and Maurine O. Hunt Allen. He attended schools in Madison, Kan., and graduated from Madison High School in 1941. During World War II he served in the South Pacific Theatre as a naval aviator. Later he served as a flight instructor at Pensacola Naval Base during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Allen began working as an air traffic controller in Kansas City, Kan. He later owned and operated Allen’s News and Dean’s Books in downtown Lawrence for more than 40 years. He was a member of Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 of the American Legion, Lawrence.

He married Betty Jeanne Griffith on June 3, 1946, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Gary Allen and wife Lynda, Lawrence, and Tom Allen and wife Susan, Lecompton; a daughter, Cathy Rosebaugh and husband Dennis, Lawrence, grandchildren Justin and Nicole Allen and Caleb and Josh Rosebaugh and great-grandchildren Amante and Grady Allen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Robert Allen.

Friends may call Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Charlotte Ann Sponholtz

Memorial Mass for Charlotte Ann Sponholtz, 65, Lawrence, will be at 9 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2011, at St. Lawrence Catholic Center, with the Rev. Mitchel Zimmerman officiating. Cremation is planned, and private inurnment will be later in Pioneer Cemetery on the Kansas University campus.

Mrs. Sponholtz died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at her home.

She was born Aug. 8, 1945, in Pittsburgh, Penn., the daughter of Eugene and Henrietta Kort Bendyk. She graduated from high school in Pittsburgh.

She married Lloyd L. Sponholtz on May 31, 1969, in Pittsburgh. They were devoted to their family and strong supporters of Kansas University. Lloyd died Sept. 30, 2008.

Mrs. Sponholtz was a homemaker, and a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Center and of the University Women’s Club. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, was an avid Kansas University basketball fan, and enjoyed shopping.

They are survived by two sons, Scott Sponholtz and wife Mandy, Lawrence, and Todd Sponholtz and wife Lynda, Boston; two daughters, Pamela Sponholtz and husband Shannon Ruckauf, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Cheri Sponholtz, Kansas City, Mo.; her mother, Henrietta Bendyk, Pittsburgh; a sister, Joyce Dunmire and husband Rob, Pittsburgh; and a granddaughter, Morgan Jane Sponholtz.

A rosary will be said at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, and the family will receive friends following the rosary until 7:30 p.m.

David Alan Brooks

David Brooks died Saturday, January 1, 2011 at his home in Lawrence, Kansas, after a long battle with cancer. David was born April 14, 1953 in Holton, Kansas. His father, Norman R. Brooks, preceded him in death in 1988. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Doris and Kenneth McCartney, Wichita, Kansas; stepmother, Delma Brooks, Belton, Missouri; one brother Byron R. Brooks, Overland Park, Kansas; Sisters; Sheryl Davis, Wichita, Kansas; Vel Spahr, San Diego, California and Ceanna Ryndfleisz, Grand Junction, Colorado. Also very special to David were his aunt and uncle, Shirley and Frank Leslie of Lawrence.
David was long time resident of Lawrence and worked many years at Lawrence Paper Company. Drag races, photography and electronics were of special interest to David. David’s family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Sharon E. Soule MD, Dona M. Snead LSCSW and the entire Oncology Center staff, volunteers and anyone else at Lawrence Memorial Hospital that contributed to his care. Because of the loving care provided they became his extended family.

Danny Lowell “Fats” Copp

Danny “Fats” Copp was born on September 6, 1955 to Lowell “Dode” Copp and Virginia “Jitter” Copp. He left this world on Sunday, January 2, 2011.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice A. Copp, and his father, Dode. Danny is survived by his mother, Virginia, of the home, four children, Scott Copp, Kansas City, KS, Danielle Copp, Jamie Stokes, and Stephen Kelly, two grandchildren, Nick and Kayla, three brothers, Dennis, David and Doug, all of Lawrence, and a sister, Susie Kerns, of Phoenix, AZ. As well a many other children he took under his wing. As well as his extended family, cousins, and friends from coast to coast.
He worked as a contractor with Steve Jeltz and his passion for motorcycles with Ted Boyle.
Fats lived to ride his Harley. His motorcycle was the love of his life. It was truly the only thing that kept him sane. He would ride alone or with just a couple of friends. Weather didn’t matter, he rode anyway. He also enjoyed riding for charity, most recently Franklin County Independent Bikers Toys for Tots runs.
In the wind, riding to think or not to think, to take it easy and unwind, or with the throttle wide open was his life. And what a ride it was!
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 from 5pm to 6pm. at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Roy L. Bray

No public services will be held for Roy L. Bray, 86, Lawrence. Cremation is planned.

Mr. Bray died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Stockton, Kan., the son of Hubert Charles and Nancy Gertrude Rea Bray. He graduated from high school in Menlo, Kan., and later served in the United States Army during World War II.

Mr. Bray was a cabinetmaker, and had worked for Reuter Organ Co. from 1974-79. He then began working for the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Standards, in 1979, and retired from there in 1989. He enjoyed woodworking and spending time with the family.

He married Oma May Pascoe on Jan. 19, 1947, in Lawrence. She survives of Vintage Park in Baldwin City.

Other survivors include two sons, Roy D. Bray and wife Katie, Raytown, Mo., and Charles L. Bray and wife Debbie, Loveland, Colo.; two daughters, Lori D. Sloan, Johnstown, Colo., and Priscilla L. Schaner and husband Thom, Greeley, Colo.; a brother, Robert C. Bray, Santa Maria, Calif.; a sister, Wanda J. Samuels, Baldwin City; six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Audrey Sue Bray, and a brother, Donald H. Bray.

Elizabeth “Betty” Josephine Brune

Services for Elizabeth “Betty” Josephine Brune, 86, Lawrence, will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the service.

Mrs. Brune died Monday, December 27, 2010, at her home.
She was born January 9, 1924, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph Jesse Svoboda and Florence Clara Saindon Svoboda Jilka. Betty graduated from the University of Kansas.

Mrs. Brune was an elementary school teacher for many years in the Lawrence area, teaching at Fairview, Cordley, Centennial, and Broken Arrow. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, reading, and music.
She married Danny Rothwell Brune November 6, 1943. He died in March of 2007.

Survivors include three sons, Daniel C. Brune, Tempe, AZ; Albert W. Brune, Lawrence; Stuart F. Brune, Duvall, WA; one daughter, Marilyn J. Brune, Eudora; a brother, Charles Svoboda, Kansas City, MO; a sister, Norma Hamrick, Lawrence; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers (Joe, Jr., Lloyd, and Floyd), and husband.

Friends may call from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday.

Carol June Harper Brown

Graveside services for Carol June Harper Brown, 64, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Taylor officiating.

Mrs. Brown died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family.

She was born May 8, 1946, in Lawrence, the daughter of Irvin Dale and Irene Mae Silvers Harper. She attended school in Lawrence.

Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. She enjoyed shopping, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She married David L. Brown on May 18, 1962, in Oskaloosa. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Jeanette Reiling, Carol Spiker and husband Randall, and Amy Rinke, all of Lawrence; a brother, Robert Harper, Lawrence; two sisters, Violet Ray, Topeka, and Rebecca Watts, Lawrence; and four grandchildren, Eric Allen, Chase Reiling, and Emily and Scott Rinke.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Doris Ashworth.

Jack Robert Maison Jr.

No services are planned for Jack Robert Maison Jr., 97, Lawrence. Cremation is planned.

Mr. Maison died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 27, 1913, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of Jack Robert Maison Sr., and was raised by he and Alga Bolt. He graduated from high school in Buffalo.

Mr. Maison was employed by E.I. DuPont as a chemist for more than 45 years, first in Buffalo, and was later instrumental in the development of the DuPont plant in Tecumseh, Kan., from which he retired. He was an avid gardener.

He married Arleen W. Rachow. She preceded him in death in July, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Jack R. Maison, Ventura, Calif., a daughter, Susan Romero and husband Rick, Lawrence; five grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Daniel N. Schnettler

A Memorial Mass for Daniel N. Schnettler, 61, of Lawrence, KS will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Cremation is planed.

Daniel died on Friday, December 24, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 17, 1949, in Sheboygan,WI, the 1st son of Jerome and Joan Schnettler.

He graduated in 1971 from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, with a degree in business. Throughout his life he lived in Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Tennessee, Texas, and Kansas. Dan was employed at Millis Transport and was an over the road truck driver for them for 11 years. Throughout his 31 year career, he drove more than 4.5 million miles.

He married Cheryl Wallace on May 24, 1980 in Milwaukee, WI. They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this year, she survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Ty, Livonia, Mich., and Jaimie, Fort Worth, Texas; two
daughters, Mya Sapien and husband Stewart, Denver, and Moriah Lindsley and husband Daniel,
Lawrence; four grandchildren, Avalin and Blake Sapien, and Sean and Chester, Lindsley; two
brothers, William and wife Patti, Neenah, Wis., and Kurt and wife K’Ann, Appleton, Wis.; and his
parents, Appleton.

Wayne Daniel

At the request of the deceased, cremation is planned and no public services will be held for Wayne Daniel, 69, Tonganoxie.

Mr. Daniel died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born Apr. 26, 1941, in Lawrence, the son of Lois Wallace and Theresa C. Loedige Daniel. He attended schools in Lawrence, and graduated from Lawrence High School. He later served in the United States Army Reserves.

Mr. Daniel was a self-employed drywall finisher and small business owner for more than 35 years, owning and operating Daniel Drywall. He enjoyed the outdoors.

He married Sharon L. Freeman on May 22, 1964, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Wendy Bundy and husband Donald, McLouth; two sons, Darren Terry and Brian Daniel and wife Jeannie, both of Tonganoxie; two brothers, Glenn Daniel and wife Lavina, Ottawa, and Harold Daniel and wife Jane, Lawrence; a sister, Ila Dean Stewart and husband Rick, Lawrence; 12 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Verlon Daniel and Johnny Norcross, and a grandson, Samuel Bundy.
