A memorial Mass for John D. “Jack” Cummings, 84, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with Fr. Mick Mulvany officiating. Burial with military honors will be at a later date at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Mr. Cummings died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.
He was born June 13, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Dennis and Agnes Hanrahan Cummings. He graduated from Southwest High School, and later earned a degree from Rockhurst University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. Cummings and his wife owned and operated several small businesses, including Dog ‘n’ Suds, Dairy Queen, and Morrow’s Nut House. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He moved to Lawrence in 1989.
He married Caroline Borne on Aug. 6, 1949, in Higginsville, Mo. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son Gary, Denver; four daughters, Jean Fields, Sioux City, Ia., Janet Hampel, Wichita, Marilyn Schrepel, Colorado Springs, and Peggy Weber, Los Alamitos, Calif.; a sister, Mary Cummings, Olathe; 13 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Cummings and James Cummings, and a grandson, David Weber.
A rosary will be recited prior to the Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
