Funeral services for Robert Walter Eggert, 82, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Eggert died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Lawrence, the son of Robert and Florence Wheeler Eggert. He attended Lawrence High School and then served in the Army and was stationed in South Korea. He returned to Lawrence and majored in accounting at Kansas University.
Upon graduation he embarked on a 20-year career as an accountant with Mobil Oil in California, Venezuela, New York, Paris, and Tripoli, Libya. He was a rural mail carrier in Lawrence for 20 years and was active in civic groups including Landlords of Lawrence, NARFE, Elks Club and East Lawrence Neighborhood Association. He attended high school reunions and coffee clubs with classmates.
He raised two small children in Libya with his wife and returned to Lawrence in 1967.
He met his future bride, Gladys Montero, in Venezuela, and they married in Paris in 1961. She died in February 2010.
Survivors include a son, Robert W. Jr. and wife Amy, Houston, Texas; a daughter, Carolyn Pannier and husband Paul, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Florence Jean Eggert, Lawrence, and four grandchildren, Allison Eggert, Robert Eggert III, and Christopher and Catherine Pannier.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday before the service.
