Dr. Oren Randolph (Randy) Duvall died unexpectedly on July 8, 2018, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas.

Randy was born on May 22, 1939, in McPherson, Kansas, to Amous (Chub) and Pauline Duvall. He graduated high school in Great Bend, Kansas, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Wichita State University. He pursued and received his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Music Education at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley.

He was a public school music educator in Littleton, Colorado. Later Randy worked at Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Missouri, and served as chairman of the Fine Arts Department.

Randy retired in 2001 following a successful business career from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan.

He is survived by his life partner of nearly 45 years, Gary L. Keller, of the home in Baldwin City, Kansas; his sister, Martha Sue White of Blue Springs, Missouri; his children, Todd Duvall and grandchildren, Logan and Ava of Michigan, and Monique Huber (Tom) and grandson Von of Atchison, Kansas, and several nieces and cousins.

Randy pursued and lived a life that was rich and full of diversity. His passions included: opera and ballet, live theatre and the best of music in all its many forms. Some of his favorite sports teams were Nebraska Cornhuskers football, Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU basketball, Detroit Red Wings hockey and Kansas City Royals baseball. He had the distinct joy of being a Royals Stadium Club bartender during the 1985 World Series Championship season. As much as he loved sports, likewise he loved live operas from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Truly, any cast of singers from the MET certainly qualifies as a music team of the highest order. He loved Drum Corps and was an avid follower and supporter for many, many years. Randy loved to plan and entertain for his family and friends. He was an incredible host and chef. Dr. Duvall was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Gamma Chapter, and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia professional music fraternity while at Wichita State University.

As a younger oboe player, Randy was fortunate to accompany Beverly Sills in her performance of Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly during his undergraduate study at Wichita State University. His conducting skills were enhanced and honed under the tutelage of world famous French Maestro Pierre Monteaux, culminating in his conducting Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto.

Of the many joys in Randy’s life, he treasured nothing more than spending special time with his family and friends. His wit, charm, humor, many nuances and brilliantly organized mind and intellect will be undoubtedly missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Randy’s name to the Lawrence Humane Society, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044 – to honor his love for animals.

Patricia Jean Platt Montgomery

Patricia Jean Platt Montgomery, of Lawrence, Kansas, died July 21, 2018.  She was born to Harold and Freda Platt on October 30, 1932, in the home of her grandparents, John and Alice Greer, in Marion, Kansas.  Her mother was born in this same home.  Patricia learned to be gritty after her mother suddenly died before she was a teen.  For a number of years during the post-depression years in San Antonio, Texas, she helped her father with the household and the management of her three younger sisters.

Patricia graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio.  She earned her bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University and her master’s degree from Fort Hays State.  Patricia was a life-long teacher.  She taught in junior high school and at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas.  To the dismay of her children, even after her retirement, she continued to voluntarily school many physicians, attorneys, accountants and other professionals in proper grammar, spelling and sentence construction.

She met her husband, John, after she was persuaded that he needed her short-hand skills while he was scouting a rival high school football team.  John was an assistant coach in Junction City, Kansas, and as Patricia was by far the prettiest single woman teaching in Junction City, John convinced her that he would be unable to complete his scouting report without her assistance.  This was the beginning of Patricia’s attendance at youth sporting events.  Through the years, she attended countless sporting events in which John coached or her children participated.

John and Patricia moved from Junction City to Limon, Colorado, then to Great Bend in 1956.  After retiring, John and Patricia traveled extensively.  They spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona, and summers in Estes Park, Colorado.  In 2005, they moved to Lawrence, Kansas.  After 61 years of marriage, John predeceased her in 2015.

Patricia is survived by her son, Steve (Jane), of Spring Hill, Kansas;   daughter, Terri Schenkel (Steve), of Great Bend; and son, Chris (Margaret), of Richmond, Virginia; as well as seven grandchildren.  Of her three younger sisters, two survive:  Janette (James) Moya of Austin, Texas, and Dianne (Bob) Ott of Salina, Kansas.  Carolyn Platt predeceased Patricia.

Patricia enthusiastically read and studied many American and English authors.  One of her favorites was Mark Twain.  She would wholeheartedly approve of Twain’s observation:  “Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of eighty and gradually approach eighteen.”

Services will be conducted on Friday, July 27, 2018, 10:30 a. m., at the First Congregational Church, Great Bend, Kansas.  A private graveside service will be held at the Marion, Kansas, cemetery on Saturday, July 28, 2018.  In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Hospice Care of Kansas, 117 North Washington, Great Bend, Kansas 67530.

Born in South Bend, Indiana, Charles attended public schools in Elmira, New York, and went to Indiana University. After graduating in 1954, he went to Johns Hopkins University and earned his PhD in 1958. After several years in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Chicago, he moved to the University of Kansas in 1966. He remained there as a professor of embryology until his retirement in 1998.

Starting in 1952, he spent summers at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, first as a lab assistant and then as an independent researcher. He and his wife, Ellen, met in a class at Indiana University, became fast friends in Woods Hole, and married in 1959. They continued to spend the summers in Woods Hole after retirement, enjoying the scientific community, natural beauty, and extensive bike trails.

Charles had interests ranging from science to history and loved classical music. Retirement allowed him to pursue his hobby of wildlife photography worldwide, in the Arctic, Antarctic, Africa, and India, and isolated islands such as the Pribilofs in the Bering Sea, St Kilda in the North Atlantic, and the Galapagos.

Memorial services will be private. However, donations in his name may be sent to the University of Kansas Field Station and Ecological Reserves (via the KU Endowment Association) or the Woods Hole Public Library (581 Woods Hole Rd, Woods Hole, MA 02543) or may be sent in care of the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home (PO Box 1260, Lawrence, KS 66044).
