Ruth Marie Cyr

Graveside inurnment services for Ruth Marie Cyr, 80, Eudora, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eudora City Cemetery.  Cremation is planned.

 Mrs. Cyr died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at Medicalodges of Eudora.

 She was born Dec. 3, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Noble E. and Ruby O. Casin Nelson.  She attended schools in Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Cyr was a homemaker, and she and her husband owned and operated the Gilded Cage in Eudora for many years.  She enjoyed socializing, music, and country dancing.

 She married Thomas E. “Ed” Cyr in 1968 in Nowata, Okla.  He died Oct. 23, 1995.

 Survivors include two daughters, Linda Webb, Lawrence, and Terry Baird, Eudora; three sons, Murl Hicks, Branson, Mo., James Hicks, Mesa, Ariz., and Dennis Hicks, Olathe; a brother Louis Nelson, Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Edith Owings, Judy Stanley, and Lela Kruse, all of Raytown, Mo.; ten grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Donald L. Bailey

Funeral services for Donald L. Bailey, 85, Baldwin City, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Vinland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nick Woods officiating.  Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona.

Mr. Bailey died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 25, 1925, in Quenemo, the son of Arthur E. and Florence Brann Bailey.  He attended Quenemo schools and graduated from Quenemo High School in 1943.  He later joined the United States Army in 1944 and served in the South Pacific.

Mr. Bailey was employed in the construction industry.  He also worked at Lehigh Printing, and was a custodian for First Presbyterian Church.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He was an avid fisherman, and had served as the Creel Clerk at Douglas County State Lake.

He married Geraldine Pearce in 1948.  They later divorced.  He married Talitha E. Wiseman in 1982.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Debbie Rice and husband Steve, Smithville, Mo., and Nancy Devers, Pomona; a son, Deely Bailey and wife Vicky, Omaha;  a brother, Larry Bailey, Fort Worth, Tex.; eight grandchildren, Dina, Devyn, Deely D., Rustin, Casey, Stephanie, Gene, and Christopher; and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Bill Bailey.

Stanley Ray “Stan” Schneck

Funeral services for Stanley Ray “Stan” Schneck, 51, Lawrence, will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.  Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

 Mr. Schneck died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at his home, from complications of liver cancer.

 He was born Dec. 16, 1958, in Lawrence, the son of Merle Roy and Donna Rae Carlson Schneck.  He graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1977, where he participated in wrestling, football, band, jazz band, Thespians, student council and was the class president his sophomore and junior years. He later attended Kansas University after receiving the McDanield scholarship.  He was also on the Lake of the Forrest swim team, and played summer baseball.  He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 149 in April, 1975.

 Mr. Schneck started his own company, Senor Stan’s Salsa in 1996.  He enjoyed fishing, cooking, mushroom hunting, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.  He was a member of Kaw Valley Mycological Society.

 He married Christine Ridpath on Sept. 24, 2010, in Lawrence.  She survives of the home.

 Other survivors include two daughters, Angel Dawn and Jessica Lauren; two grandchildren, Emma and Parker Story; his parents, Merle and Donna Schneck, of Bonner Springs, formerly of Lawrence; three brothers, Marlon and wife Michele, and Monty and wife Maria, Lawrence, and Glenn, Bonner Springs; a grandmother, Lucy Schneck, Lawrence; and five nieces and nephews.

 He was preceded in death by grandparents Maurice and Edna Carlson and Gaylord Schneck.

 Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.  The family will receive friends following the service.

Janet “Jan” Hibbert

Janet “Jan” Hibbert, passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, October 23, 2010, in Lawrence, Ks, eighteen days before her 92nd birthday. Jan was preceded in death by Jack, her husband of 66 years who passed away May 8, 2010 (b May 17, 1918). As were their wishes, a private, family service will be held to scatter their ashes together at their grave site in Eureka, IL. Jan was born November 10, 1918, in Eureka, Illinois, to Flossie May (Petri) and John Emery Harper. She graduated from Peoria High School and attended Brown’s Business College of Peoria, IL. She was married January 1, 1944, to John “Jack” Salmon Hibbert at her grandparent’s farm in Elmwood, Illinois. After a few moves, Jan and Jack settled in Topeka, Kansas, in 1957.

One of Jan’s legacies is the value of hard work. Unlike the majority of women in her time, Jan worked full-time after graduating high school until her retirement. Her final career was as a devoted employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for over 28 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of Telephone Pioneers until her death. After selling their store in Topeka, Jack’s Paint & Wallpaper, Jan and Jack enjoyed their retirement in Green Valley, AZ for 16 yrs.

Until retirement, Jan enjoyed preparing and hosting family holiday meals. After retirement and having prepared daily meals for her family for so long, Jan took great joy in eating out with family members, often picking up the tab. In retirement, Jan was a consummate reader, crossword puzzle master, and card player, enjoying playing cards with the family up until a few weeks before her passing.

Jan took great pride in her family. She is survived by her daughters, Teresa Lind and husband John White, Mary and husband Larry Patch, and Sandra and husband Bill Hemstreet. Her family includes 8 grandchildren: Brandon and Steven (Krystal) Lind; Sarah (Derek Kleinmann) and Michael Patch; Scott, Matt, Mitzi, and Brett (Jennifer) Hemstreet. Jan’s legacy continues in 7 great grandchildren: Reyna, Jackson, Chloe, Kayleigh, Jacob, Starr, Quinton, and 1 on the way: Baby Boy Kleinmann.

Jan is also survived by two beloved sisters and their husbands: Carol & Bill Hawkins of Springfield, MO and Marietta & Joe Christman of Green Valley, AZ; as well as 2 nieces & 2 nephews along with their families. A, niece Reverend Elizabeth Hawkins (age 49) preceded her in death.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Pioneer Ridge of Lawrence, KS; the nurses & aides of Lawrence Memorial Hospital; Dr. Cheryl Rice; and a special note of gratitude to Dr. Charles Yockey whose medical care of & heartfelt concern for our mother and father were very appreciated and of great comfort to the family.

Ronald Leroy Buerman

Services for Ronald Leroy Buerman, 65, Lawrence, will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday October 23, 2010 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Vinland Cemetery.

 

Mr. Buerman died Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at his home.  He was born October 20, 1945 in Lawrence, the son of Everett L. and Ruth Genevive (Colman) Buerman.  He grew up and attended schools in Eudora.

 

He married Shirley Reekie on August 23, 1963, in Lawrence, Kansas at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.  They shared over forty-seven years of marriage. She survives of the home.

 

Mr. Buerman worked at Penny Ready-Mix from 1963 to 1978 and N.R. Hamm Construction from 1978 to 2008, retiring due to illness.  He was a member of Topeka Local Teamsters Union 696.  He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Was an avid K.U.  sports fan and loved animals, especially horses.

 

Other survivors include a son, Monte L. Buerman and wife Shelly of Baldwin City; a daughter, Brenda L. Shockley and husband Jeremy of Baldwin City; a sister, Mary Lois Galyardt of Topeka; and four grandchildren.

 

Mr. Buerman was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Sandra Alverson, Judith Romines and Diane Buerman.

 

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Dollie K. Bittenbender

Memorial services for Dollie Kathleen Bittenbender, 92, Lawrence, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 28, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway, Lawrence, KS 66047.
Mrs. Bittenbender died Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.
She was born October 3, 1918, in Springfield, MO, the daughter of William Levi and Hattie Burtin Jones. Dollie grew up on a dairy and crop farm North of Springfield with two older brothers. She graduated from Pleasant Hope High School in 1935, at age 16. She completed her bachelors degree in teaching secretarial skills with a minor in mathematics, from Southwest Missouri State Teachers College in 1938. Dollie earned her masters degree in communications in 1972, at age 53, from the University of Kansas.
Starting in 1938, she taught high school secretarial skills in Eminence, MO. During WWII, she worked at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, as a secretary and then taught in Rolla, MO. Dollie taught typing, shorthand, and business finance at Haskell Indian Nations University for 15 years and retired from there in 1981. She was involved in the University Club, Zodiac Study Club, Meadowlark Garden Club, Writing For Yourself group (Babcock Place), and a women’s bridge club. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She married Clark R. Bittenbender on April 28, 1944, in Springfield, MO. They lived in Palo Alto, CA, until the end of WWII. Then they lived in Chicago, IL, until Clark finished his degree in Podiatric Medicine. In 1948, they relocated to Lawrence, and made it their home where she was a wife, mother, teacher, bridge player, gardener, and poet.
All of her life, Dollie enjoyed expressing herself in creative writing and in poetry. She published her first poem in 1952, in the Kansas Magazine, under the name Kathleen Jones. The poems she wrote from 1952 to 2009, she organized into two volumes. After 2004, she finished a volume of stories as told to her by her husband, Clark, and a volume of her own stories about happenings in her life. Dollie also loved to cook and often took food to friends or neighbors who were ill or in need.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother (Burt Jones), and her husband.
She is survived by a son, Lee R. Bittenbender and wife Sandy L. Brown, Lawrence; daughter, Veronica K Ashlie (fka: Carol Bittenbender), Lawrence; two granddaughters, Laura C. Bittenbender, Lawrence, and Kyra L. Martinez and husband Greg, Houston, TX; brother, Lewis Jones and wife Lucy, Nixa, MO; and eight nieces and nephews.

Jeffrey Brent Long

A memorial visitation for Jeffrey Brent Long, 57, Lawrence, will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

 Mr. Long died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

 He was born Apr. 2, 1953, in Topeka, the son of Jess and Patricia Keeling Long.  He graduated from Topeka West High School.

 Mr. Long worked as a corrections officer in a state prison in Iowa for 13 years.  He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing.

 Survivors include a son, Elijah Graham Long, Las Vegas; a daughter Jandi L. DeForest and husband Robert, Lawrence; three brothers, Dennis and wife Karen, and Patrick and wife Connie, both of Carbondale, and Tim and wife Linda, Topeka; and two grandsons, Spencer and Zachary DeForest.

Lesley Michelle “Les” Smith

A Celebration of Life for Lesley Michelle “Les” Smith, 38, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Eagles Lodge, 1803 W. 6th St., Lawrence.

 Miss Smith was found Sept. 21, 2010, in Clinton Lake, after disappearing from her home on Jan.26, 2004.

 She was born Jan. 23, 1966, in Ottawa, the daughter of Dennis D. “Jack” and Marilyn S. Elbs Smith.  She graduated from Ottawa High School in 1984, and later attended Washburn University.  At the time of her death, she was planning to attend nursing school.  She enjoyed softball, and attended the World Softball Tournament twice in Seattle and Florida.  She was a wine connoisseur, and loved to make people laugh and to make uncomfortable situations more comfortable.

 Survivors include her mother, Marilyn Anderson and husband Gary, Lawrence; her father, Jack Smith and wife Janice, Ottawa; and two brothers, Kent Anderson and wife Wendee, Kansas City, Kan., and Mike Anderson and wife Lynn, Wichita.

Chester McMillen

Funeral services for Chester McMillen, 93, Baldwin City, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.  Burial with military honors will follow in Topeka Cemetery.

Mr. McMillen died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at his home.

He was born July 13, 1917, in the Stony Point community of rural Douglas County, the son of Jack E. and Bertha Lawson McMillen.  He attended school in Stony Point.  He later served in the United States Army Air Forces, and attained the rank of Sergeant.

Mr. McMillen and his wife owned the A & B Root Beer Stand in North Lawrence until the 1951 flood, when they moved to Baldwin, and purchased the restaurant and gas station from O.D. Webb.  He later worked at Audra’s Dawg House and Cordoba’s.  He was an avid sports fan, especially the Kansas City Royals, and loved to cook, travel, and being around people.

He married Audra Mae Rainey on May 21, 1951, in Rogers, Ark.  She died July 23, 1993.  He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Don, Carly, and Dale McMillen.

Survivors include a daughter, Dotty Newland, Baldwin City; a sister, Letha Myers, Baldwin City; four grandchildren, Lary Trowbridge, Eudora, and fiancee Margie Delfelder, Lawrence, Merle Newland, Richmond, Jana Kelley and husband Garry, and Nancy Cassity and husband Bill, all of Baldwin City; eight great grandchildren, Jill Watson, Tyler and Morgan Trowbridge, Maria Swonger, Melody Newland, Megan Woods, Clayton Culley, and Jenny Thomas; and a great-great grandson, Carter Watson.
