A memorial service for Helen Fitz Sturdy, 97, Baldwin City, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at Vinland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nicholas Woods officiating.

Mathilda Mary “Tillie” Dodson

Mathilda Mary Dodson

Graveside services for Mathilda Mary “Tillie” Dodson, 93, Lawrence, will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Dodson died Monday, October 4, 2010 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

She was born February 1, 1917, in Chicago, the daughter of Frank and Julie Wojtech. 

She worked as a telephone operator for 14 years in Chicago, and later as a sales clerk at Kroger in Lawrence.  Tillie was a landlady and enjoyed gardening, playing cards, bingo, boating, dancing, telling jokes, shopping, and spending time with her grandchildren. 

She married Ed Dodson in 1951 and lived in Lawrence for over 50 years.  He died in 2006.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Crawford and husband Steve, Lawrence; three grandchildren, John, Wes, and Stephanie; a brother and sister; two sister-in-laws, Goldie Harmon and Virginia Copp, of Lawrence; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Tillie will be forever remembered for her kindness, big smile, and sense of humor.  She will be greatly missed!

Friends may call from noon to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.  Following the service on Thursday, there will be a celebration of Tillie’s life at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community, 4851 Harvard Rd., Lawrence, KS 66049-3964 at 3:30 p.m.  Everyone is welcome.

Isadore Dahlene Sadler

Graveside services for Isadore Dahlene Sadler, 91, Lawrence, will be at 11am Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Sadler died Monday at her home. She was born Sept. 11, 1919 in Eudora the daughter of Carl J. and Anna J. Snow Copp. Dahlene worked as a bookkeeper all of her life, and was very active after retirement. She live at Prairie Ridge Place for 31 years, and was very active in the tenants association. She also worked at Eckan and the Lawrence Indian Center, and held numerous volunteer positions. Dahlene lived a full life and touched the hearts of everyone she knew.

Survivors include a daughter Lisa Manlove, husband David Manlove, grandchildren, Bret Manlove, Crystal Manlove (Bret’s wife), Jessica Manlove, Timothy Bledsoe (Jessica’s fiancee), and one great grandchild due March 1st 2011, all of Horton, KS. Other survivors include Virginia Copp, of Lawrence, 22 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from noon to 8pm. Wednesday at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Their will be a remembrance at Prairie Ridge Place, 2424 Melrose Ln, in building A meeting room on 3rd floor at 12:30pm following the service. Susan R. Simpson

Graveside memorial services for Susan R. Simpson, 68, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Simpson died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 12, 1941, in Appleton, Wisc.  She attended schools in Appleton, and graduated from Appleton High School.  She moved to Topeka in 1977, and to Lawrence in 1980.

Mrs. Simpson worked as a claims processor and supervisor for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 11 years, retiring in 1995.  She attended St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church.

She married Robert L. “Bob” Simpson on Aug. 23, 1980, in Lawrence.  He died June 1, 2002.  She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include children James Simpson, Lawrence, Bobbi Kearney and husband John, Valley Falls, and Tina Robbins and husband Brad, Lawrence; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services for Retired Captain Gordon L. Frantz, 80, Lawrence, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Private family burial with full military honors will follow Friday at  Leavenworth National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 3:30 p.m. until the service hour Thursday at the funeral home.                         .

Funeral services for Ilah Jane Molby Miller, 76, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with Chaplain Wilton Detweiler officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

She was born Jan. 29, 1934, in Washington County, Kan., the daughter of Frank R. and Leoda O. Sackett Molby.  She attended schools in Clinton, Kan., and graduated from Washington High School.

Mrs. Miller was an office assistant at the University of Kansas for nearly 36 years.  She was a member of the First Christian Church, and a Deaconness in the Christian Church.  She was also a member of the Kaw Valley Good Sam Camping Club.

She married Bernard Leroy Miller on June 24, 1973 in Lawrence. He died Jan. 1, 1995.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother Verda North Molby, and her stepbrother, Clifford Hamill.

Survivors include two stepsons, Michael L. Miller, Lawrence, and Patrick Miller, Olathe; two stepdaughters, Angie McClure, Lecompton, and Judy Hadley, Seattle; three brothers, the Rev. Robert Molby and wife Fayetta, Omaha, Frank Molby and wife Sharon, Lawrence, and Eugene Molby, Ulysses; nine stepgrandchildren, and three step great grandchildren.

Elizabeth Cowie Kennedy

Graveside services for Elizabeth Cowie Kennedy, 95, Lacon, Illinois, will be private.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Kennedy died Sunday, September 19, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, Lacon.

She was born October 14, 1914, in Lawrence, the daughter of Ernest E. and Eleanor (Pierson) Cowie.  She graduated from Kansas State University. 

She married Dr. Francis Maxwell Kennedy on November 22, 1940, in Kansas City, Mo.  He preceded her in death on February 23, 2004.

She was a teacher for several years in Walnut, Kan., and a substitute teacher in Illinois.  Mrs. Kennedy assisted her husband in the Kennedy Veterinary Clinic in Washburn, Illinois for several years.  She was an avid golfer and bridge player.

Survivors include three daughters, Elinor Everitt and husband Dave, Moline, Ill., Mary Beth Armentrout and husband Fred, Chillicothe, Ill., and Sandy Gilhouse and husband Mark,  Sun Prairie, Wisc.; eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Eleanor M. Remlinger

Funeral services for Eleanor M. Remlinger, 80, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Bishop Peter Steimle and Larry Day officiating.  Private interment will be later at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

 Mrs. Remlinger died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at her home.

 She was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Topeka.

 Mrs. Remlinger was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  She enjoyed birds, children, and soap operas.

 She married William F. “Bill” Remlinger on June 27, 1949, in Topeka.  He died Mar. 7, 2000.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Fred.

 Survivors include a son, Stephen, Lawrence; two daughters, Laura Hugunin, Overland Park, and Penny Kelley, Independence, Mo.; her caregiver, Barbara Sufian, Lawrence; seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Dr. F. Russell Frink

Dr. F. Russell Frink

A Celebration of Life for Dr. F. Russell Frink, 91, Lawrence, will be announced at a later date.  He donated his body to science.

Dr. Frink died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at The Windsor of Lawrence.

He was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Lawrence, the son of Lloyd and Grace Russell Frink.  He served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II as a Lieutenant Colonel.  Upon his return to the states, he attended and graduated from Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Dr. Frink practiced medicine in Lawrence from 1949 to 1974.  He then served as the Chief of the Primary Care Clinic at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida from 1975 to 1996, before retiring back to Lawrence.

He married Margaret Ice Stough Metz on Aug, 17, 1947, at Danforth Chapel on the Kansas University campus.  She died July 17, 2003.  He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.

Survivors include a daughter, Mimi Frink Kaplysh and husband Ted, Grand Lake, Colo.; two sons, James Frink and wife Sharon, Lawrence, and Paul Frink, Merritt Island, Fla.; four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Roda “May” Abel

Funeral services for Roda “May” Abel, 76, Lawrence will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at  Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence.

 Mrs. Abel died Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at her son’s home in Baldwin City.

She was born July 20, 1934, in Shannon County, MO. the daughter of Charles L. and Telsia Ivy Callahan Roberts.

Mrs. Abel was a homemaker.

She was a member of the River City CB Club and Oohs and Aahs Camping Club, both of Lawrence.

Mrs. Abel married Robert Lloyd Abel on May 31, 1951, in Salem, Ark.  He died June 14, 1997.

Survivors include a son, Mark and wife Veronica Abel, Baldwin City; a brother, Charles Roberts, Oskaloosa; a sister Eula Reynolds,  Lawrence; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
