Mildred Irene Petefish Allen

Private graveside services for Mildred Irene Petefish Allen, 95, Baldwin City, will be Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Allen died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

She was born Jan. 1, 1915, in the Sigel neighborhood of rural Douglas County, the daughter of Alva E. and Daisy Hickock Petefish.  She graduated from Sigel School in 1928, and from Liberty Memorial High School in 1932.  She later attended Lawrence Business College.

Mrs. Allen was employed by Standard Mutual Life Insurance Company for 28 years as a Legal Secretary.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Baldwin City, and was a charter member of United Methodist Women.  She held various positions in the local, district, and conference of United Methodist Women.  She was a member of the Evangeline Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, and was Worthy Matron Grand page and District Aide, Past Matrons, and Chapter CK of P.E.O., the American Legion Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Leisure Hour, Santa Fe Historical Society, Douglas County Historical Society, Kansas State Historical Society, the American Association of Retired Persons, Charter member of Baldwin City Business and Professional Women’s Club, Rebekah Lodge, Kansas Alumni Association, Douglas County Republican Women, and Farm and Country Republican Women.  She served as chairman of the Baldwin City Bicentennial Committee, and served as a Republican Precinct Committeewoman for many years.  She was past president of the Women’s Kansas Day Club, a member of West Side Study Club, the 40 and 8 Salon No. 512, the National Federation of Republican Women, and the Red Hat Society.

She married Richard F. Allen on Aug. 22, 1952, in Topeka.  They resided in Baldwin City.  He died Mar. 29, 1993.  He was an attorney and served in the Kansas Legislature in the 1950’s.

She is preceded in death by one brother George Petefish and 3 sisters, Marie Johnson, Mae Cox and Faye Goff.

Survivors include a stepson, Ralph C. Allen and wife Kathy, El Cajon, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Georgianna Tait, Scottsdale, Ariz.; several step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren; several nephews, including Rex Johnson and wife Shirley, Clinton, and George Goff, Lawrence; and several nieces, including Berniece Kennedy, Lawrence, and Doris Wingert and husband Lloyd, Lawrence.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

William D. Naff

William D. Naff

Funeral services for William Dale Naff, 78, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Southside Church of Christ, with Mark Abshier officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence.

Mr. Naff died Monday, September 6, 2010, at his home.

He was born November 3, 1931, in St. Paul, Kansas, the son of Philip Donald and Bessie Lavone (Welch) Naff. He graduated from University High School at KU in 1949.

Mr. Naff served as Petty Officer 3rd Class in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Southside Church of Christ and past member of Lions Club.

He worked for Southwestern Bell for many years retiring as a Supervisor.

He married Darlene M. Votaw on April 24, 1953.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, William N. “Buddy” Naff and wife Cynthia, Lawrence, KS and Mark A. Naff and wife Cynthia, Lawrence, KS.; a daughter, Kim E. Pendergraft and husband A. Powell, Austin, TX; two brothers, Robert E. Naff of Eudora, KS and E. Duaine Naff and wife Martha, San Bernardino, CA; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Naff was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lavone Broyles.

Mary Ellen Rausch Paulson

 Funeral services for Mary Ellen Rausch Paulson, 75, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.  Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Grinter Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan.

Mrs. Paulson died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 29, 1934, in Olathe, the daughter of David and Dorothy Lee Chesney.  She attended schools in Clovis, New Mexico.

Mrs. Paulson was employed by Davol, Inc. until they closed.  She was previously employed by King Radio and Packer Plastics.  She was a member of the Eudora Assembly of God, the Eagles #309 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Women in the Moose Chapter #1091.  She enjoyed square dancing, traveling, camping, socializing, and being ‘Grammy.’

She married Alvin L. Rausch on May 5, 1956.  He died Feb. 28, 1971.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter.

Survivors include five children, Frances Alexander, Greensboro, N.C., Vickie Rausch, Lawrence, Dorothy Williams and husband Lloyd, Lenexa, David Rausch and wife Mary, Olathe, and Mary K. Dixon, Lawrence; a brother, Herb Chesney and wife Peggy, Parachute, Colo.;  eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Alberta Opal Snow

A celebration of life for Alberta Opal “Bertie” Snow, 87, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.  Private burial will be conducted in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Snow died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Care Cottage in Lawrence.

 She was born Oct. 21, 1922, in rural Jefferson County, the daughter of Oliver Richard and Ida Jane Daniels Garner. She graduated from McLouth High School in 1941.

Mrs. Snow worked for Douglas County Visiting Nurses from 1985-91.  Previously, she had worked at Kansas University in the Educational Placement Bureau and the Continuing Education departments, and also for the Lawrence Journal-World.  She was a member of First Christian Church, and a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Past Noble Grand Club, a past president of Oldsters United for Responsible Service dance club, and was a volunteer caregiver to many family members and friends.  She was also known as ‘the cookie lady.’

She married Walter R. Snow in 1943, in Lawrence.  He died Mar. 11, 1969.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Snow, Overland Park; a daughter, Nancy Hale-Martinko and husband Ed, Lawrence; a brother, Raymond Garner, Shawnee; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Joseph E. Lown Jr.

Joseph E. Lown Jr.

Graveside services for Joseph E. Lown Jr., 83, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Perry Michelson officiating.

Mr. Lown died Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehab Center.

He was born Apr. 10, 1927, in Lawrence, the son of Joseph E. Sr. and Goldie Sewell Lown.  He attended Lawrence schools.

Mr. Lown was employed by Lawrence Pipe & Steel for more than 30 years.  After his retirement, he worked at River City Car Wash.  He was a member of Church of God (Holiness), and enjoyed playing bingo and making cookies at the nursing home.

He married Barbara Jean Bell on June 25, 1982, in Ford County, Kan.  She died Apr. 27, 2004. 

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Sheila Lillard and husband Tom, Taylorsville, Ky.; a brother, Francis Leroy Lown, Thailand; two sisters, Linda Lown Lassen and husband Pete, Lawrence, and Izetta Countess, Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Trixie.

Fred Robert Rhoades

Services for Fred Robert Rhoades, 52, Eudora, will be private.

Mr. Rhoades died Friday, August 27, 2010, at his home.

He was born April 25, 1958, the son of Fred A. and Mildred M. Harmon Rhoades.

Mr. Rhoades worked in the excavating business as a heavy machine operator.  He enjoyed the outdoors, motorcycles, and barbecuing.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Bryant, Oskaloosa, and Johnny Rhoades, Eudora; four sisters, Jerri Welliver, Ozwakie, Debbi Thompson, Perry, Diane Rhoades, Lawrence, and Tricia Rhoades, Ozwakie; and four grandchildren.

James W. “Jim” Vincent

Memorial services for James W. “Jim” Vincent, 75, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, with the Rev. Dr. Michael Vincent officiating.  Inurnment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

 Mr. Vincent died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka.

 He was born May 11, 1935, in Lawrence, the son of John and Frances Smith Cole.  At age 16, he was adopted by his stepfather, V. Jack Vincent.

 Mr. Vincent lived most of his life in Lawrence, and was involved in a variety of ventures and touched many lives over the years.  He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

 He married Elizabeth A. “Betty” Allen on May 24, 1959, in Lawrence.  She survives of the home.

 Other survivors include two sons, J. Warren Vincent and wife Virginia, McKinney, Tex., and the Rev. Dr. Michael Vincent and wife Kathryn, Norfolk, Neb.; a brother, Charles “Bud” Vincent, Baldwin City; a stepsister, Sally Burgess, Seal Beach, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Jim, Bill, Abbie, Sam, and Debbie Vincent.

 The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

 Memorials in memory of Mr. Vincent can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Viola Carolyn Rolander Marino

Viola Carolyn Rolander Marino

Viola Carolyn Rolander Marino, 91, Lawrence, died on Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at her home.   Viola was born July 7, 1919 in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of John and Alida (Peterson) Rolander. 

Viola married John Marino on September 2, 1943, in Columbus, Ga.  They were married for 65 years and lived for 55 years in Salina, Ks., where John managed the Salina Country Club.  After his death in February, 2009, she moved to Lawrence to be near her children.  Viola was a homemaker and privately also composed lyrics and music for hundreds of songs.  She enjoyed studying languages, particularly Latin.

In addition to her husband, Viola was preceded in death by one daughter Belle Marino, in 2007, and by her two brothers Lydon and Clarence, and sister Yolande.  Survivors include five children, Carolyn Malone, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Rose Marino and husband David Hann, of Lawrence, John C. Marino, of Parsons, Lucille Marino of Lawrence, and Anthony Marino and wife Laura, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana Street, Lawrence 66044.  Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Olsburg Cemetery, Olsburg, Ks. 

Friends may call Tuesday noon to 8 p.m. and Wednesday 9 a.m. until service time, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
