Jean Saffell Allen

Memorial Mass for Jean Saffell Allen, 87, Lawrence, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday December 4, 2010 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

Jean passed away Nov. 26, 2010. She willed her body to the KU Medical School for Research.

Jean was born Aug 15th, 1923 in Junction City the daughter of Paul L. and Mabel Wahle Saffell. She was educated in Cloud and Riley County schools, graduating from Emporia High School in 1941.

She later graduated from Marymount College in Salina, in 1943, in art and completed her bachelor degree in design from the Fine Arts School at Kansas University in 1945, while there she became a member of Pi Beta Phi social sorority.

Jean then returned to Marymount College to teach art subjects until 1947, she then joined the KU Design faculty with the school of Fine Arts. She received her Masters degree in Design in 1954 and retired to raise a family.

Through the years in addition to raising a family she was Chairperson, board member, judge, consultant and student in several art disciplines, shows, contests, displays at KU, in Lawrence and Douglas County, being a Co-founder of the Lawrence Art Festival and display chairman of the first Art in the Park in the Community Building. In 1971 she accepted a teaching position with then Haskell Indian JC working with students mostly in weaving techniques and other art subjects, retiring in 1987.

She married C Roger Allen July 12, 1952, he survives of the home. Jean is further survived by sons Charles and wife Renee, Chad and wife Sherri, Tim and wife Patty and Tom. Jean is also survived by a sister, Pat and her husband Joe Siemens, seven grandchildren, five great grand children, three nephews, and six nieces. Two brothers and her parents preceded her in death.

John D. Cummings

A memorial Mass for John D. “Jack” Cummings, 84, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with Fr. Mick Mulvany officiating. Burial with military honors will be at a later date at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Mr. Cummings died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

He was born June 13, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Dennis and Agnes Hanrahan Cummings. He graduated from Southwest High School, and later earned a degree from Rockhurst University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Mr. Cummings and his wife owned and operated several small businesses, including Dog ‘n’ Suds, Dairy Queen, and Morrow’s Nut House. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He moved to Lawrence in 1989.

He married Caroline Borne on Aug. 6, 1949, in Higginsville, Mo. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son Gary, Denver; four daughters, Jean Fields, Sioux City, Ia., Janet Hampel, Wichita, Marilyn Schrepel, Colorado Springs, and Peggy Weber, Los Alamitos, Calif.; a sister, Mary Cummings, Olathe; 13 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Cummings and James Cummings, and a grandson, David Weber.

A rosary will be recited prior to the Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

Rex A. Ferrett

Memorial services for Rex A. Ferrett, 61, Lawrence, may be held at a later date. Cremation is planned.

Mr. Ferrett died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Leavenworth.

He was born Dec. 5, 1948, in Vanderbilt, Michigan, the son of William and Ruby Holborn Ferrett. He served in the United States Army.

Mr. Ferrett worked for the City of Lawrence for several years. He later started his own fishing supplies business.

He married Carol J. Richards. She survives of the home.

Richard E. Avery

Graveside inurnment services for Richard E. Avery, 60, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Avery died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at his home. He retired as a police officer for the Kansas University Public Safety Department after nearly 20 years of service.

Local survivors include a brother, Gary Avery and wife Rita, Lawrence.

Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Charles David Reno

Graveside services with military honors for Charles David Reno, 71, Linwood, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Sidney Cemetery, Linwood, with Pastor Joe Igla officiating.

Mr. Reno died Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 18, 1939, in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Charley N. and Helen Walker Reno. He attended Shawnee Mission North High School. He later served in the United States Marine Corps in Japan and the Philippines.

Mr. Reno was employed by the United States Postal Service in Shawnee Mission, and retired in 1992 after 35 years of service. He attended Linwood Baptist Church, and was a Ham Radio operator. He loved his family.

He married Mary (Kathy) Holmes on Apr. 23, 1977 in Kansas City, Kan. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three children, Hugh Reno, Linwood, Joshua Reno, Overland Park, and Deanna Hanson, Fairway; a sister, Sharon Lydick, Kansas City, Mo.; three grandchildren, Sarah, Lindsey, and Kelsey; and one great grandchild, Emiliano.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. The casket will remain closed.

Keyshawn Jerome Spates

Funeral services for Keyshawn Jerome Spates, 6 days, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Teske officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Keyshawn died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 8, 2010, in Lawrence, the son of Cager Jerome Spates and Mandy G. Dreiling.

Survivors include his parents, Lawrence; three brothers, Demarcus Dreiling, and Christian and Cager Spates Jr.; two sisters, Alexis Dreiling, and Ashaunti Spates; maternal grandfather, Roger Dreiling; maternal grandmother, Jean Dreiling; paternal grandfather, Jesse Wilbur; and paternal grandmother Melissa Spates; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jeffrey Dean Lowenthal

Memorial services for Jeffrey Dean Lowenthal, 54, Carrollton, Texas, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, with Pastor Dave Peterson officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.
He died Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, in Carollton.
He was born June 11, 1956, in Oakley, the son of Alfred and Ruth Hueftle Lowenthal.
He was educated in the Oakley and Colby public schools and attended Colby Community College.
Mr. Lowenthal farmed for his father and grandfather in Thomas County for seven years following high school graduation. He moved to Lawrence in 1980 and worked in sales. He specialized in waterbed sales and eventually moved into fine furniture sales when he relocated to Dallas in 1996.
He married Suzy Garrett in June 1983. They divorced in 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Christina Janette, Overland Park; his mother, Ruth Lowenthal, Lawrence; a sister, Deb Teeter and husband Ron, Lawrence; two brothers, Richard Lowenthal and wife Kathy, Scott City, and David Lowenthal and wife Barbara, Lawrence; several nieces and nephews including Jackie Eastland and her husband Toby, Todd Isaac, and Blake Lowenthal, all of Lawrence; and two great-nieces, Taylor and Katelyn Eastland, Lawrence.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Ruth Marie Cyr

Graveside inurnment services for Ruth Marie Cyr, 80, Eudora, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eudora City Cemetery.  Cremation is planned.

 Mrs. Cyr died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at Medicalodges of Eudora.

 She was born Dec. 3, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Noble E. and Ruby O. Casin Nelson.  She attended schools in Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Cyr was a homemaker, and she and her husband owned and operated the Gilded Cage in Eudora for many years.  She enjoyed socializing, music, and country dancing.

 She married Thomas E. “Ed” Cyr in 1968 in Nowata, Okla.  He died Oct. 23, 1995.

 Survivors include two daughters, Linda Webb, Lawrence, and Terry Baird, Eudora; three sons, Murl Hicks, Branson, Mo., James Hicks, Mesa, Ariz., and Dennis Hicks, Olathe; a brother Louis Nelson, Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Edith Owings, Judy Stanley, and Lela Kruse, all of Raytown, Mo.; ten grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
