Dorothy L. Farmer

Graveside service for Dorothy L. Farmer 96, Eudora, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Farmer died Tuesday at her home.

She was born June 17, 1914 in Des Moines, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Dora Peters Oakes.

Mrs. Farmer was a homemaker.

She married Everett R. Farmer on Feb. 15, 1935. He preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1986.

She was also preceded in death by 3 sisters Virginia, Theda, and Zella and three brothers Charles Wilbur and Henry.

Survivors include a son Everett R. Farmer and wife Virgie of Eudora, sisters Maxine and Wilma both of Lawrence, grandchildren Virgie K. Farmer, Robert D. Farmer, Lawrence, Dorothy F. Turley and husband Wes Harpers Ferry, WV, Linda L. Cosco and husband Jim Doylestown, PA, great-grandchildren Christopher, David, Annie, Travis, great-great-grandchildren Mathew, Ryan, Patrick, and Christopher Jr.

Nina L. Smith

A memorial visitation for Nina L. Smith, 66, Eudora, will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith died Monday, December 13, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born August 20, 1944, in Mountain View, Mo., the daughter of Ray and Leona Lathrom Alumbaugh. She graduated from Lawrence High School.

Mrs. Smith was a buyer for Gibson’s Discount Center, and later for Sac’s. She then did bookkeeping for her son’s business, James Auto, in Eudora. She enjoyed her plants and rose bushes, and her dog Baby.

Survivors include her husband, Roy, of the home; two sons, James Smith and wife Cynthia, Eudora, and John Smith and wife Tina, McLouth; a brother, David Alumbaugh, Lawrence; two sisters, Joetta Weaver and husband Jesse, Lawrence, and Rosetta Alumbaugh-Hansen and husband Mark Hansen, Lawrence; three grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, and Crystal Smith; two step-grandchildren, Summer Wisdom and Tara Pittman; and two great grandchildren, Antonio Sanchez and Bronson Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Lloyd Alumbaugh.

Ilse Steinhardt

Ilse Steinhardt, 96, Lawrence, died peacefully at her home in Brandon Woods on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010.
Ilse was born in Munich, Germany on November 2, 1914 the daughter of Paul I. and Mina Metzger Boral.
She married Milton Steinhardt in 1933; he preceded her in death in 1994.
Ilse and Milton moved to America in 1935, then to Lawrence in 1951.
She will always be remembered for being outspoken but fair, her generosity, fun spirit, sense of humor, being a gracious hostess, filling hearts of others with her music and her unforgettable smile.
Ilsa is survived by her son Robby Steinhardt, his companion Cindy and granddaughter Becky, all of Tampa, FL.
Private services are planned.

Patricia Ann “Patty” Campbell

A Celebration of Life service for Patricia Ann “Patty” Campbell, 57, Lawrence, formerly of Eudora, will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with Tim O’Byrne officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Cremation is planned.

Ms. Campbell died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at her home.

She was born July 15, 1953, in Lawrence, the daughter of Nelson and Loeta McMullen Tingle. She attended grade school in Lawrence, and graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1971.

Ms. Campbell lived and worked on the RC Campbell Ranch in Eudora, tending cattle and raising her children. She also worked at Hallmark Cards, and later as a custodian at Kansas University, retiring in 2007. She enjoyed camping, fishing, water skiing, Jet-Skiing, and fast driving in her red Camaro.

She married Ramon C. Campbell on Feb. 6, 1971, in Leavenworth. They divorced in 1989.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Survivors include a son, Curtis Campbell and wife Janniece, Lawrence; a daughter, Cynthia Teter and husband Brent, Holton; two sisters, Evelyn Hardy and Carol (Berg) Meiners and husband Dave, all of Lawrence; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Ingeburg A. Starr

A Celebration of Life service for Ingeburg Starr, 82, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 18th at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave., Lawrence, Kansas.

Inge died Sunday, December 5, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, following a short illness. Her body was cremated and laid to rest with her husband Merle, at the Leavenworth VA National Cemetery on Friday December 10th, 2010.

Inge was born on May 13th, 1928 in Solingen, Germany, the daughter of August and Paula Hermann’s.

Upon her graduation from school in Solingen, she worked several years in both Germany and England. She immigrated to the United States in 1956 and was extremely proud to become a naturalized citizen of the United States of America on February 27th, 1961 .
In her early arrival, she gained employment as a nanny in the New York area. Shortly thereafter, Inge met and married Merle and began her life as a wife to a career Air Force veteran. They traveled extensively and lived in many different areas of the country. In 1969 they moved to Lawrence and settled in to raise their sons Kenny and John.

Inge was well known among her family, friends and church members for her wonderful cooking and baking talents. She put her love, heart and soul into each and every dish that she served. Inge was a popular chef for the Oompahfest Festival and the Oktoberfest held at St. Johns Catholic Church which is held annually in Lawrence. Her homemade German Christmas Stolen was a favorite of many-many friends.

She will also be remembered for the kind, gentle, welcoming and loving spirit that she carried with her at all times. Her care and concern for others were always a priority in her life. Her holiday tables usually consisted of family and many others who were unable to make it home or those that had no family.

Inge retired after 27 years of working at the Kansas University Computer Center and later the Watson Library.

She was preceded in death by her husband Merle, two brothers, a sister and her parents and step-sons, Bill and Bobby Starr.

She is survived by sons, Kenny and John Starr both of Lawrence, Kansas, step-daughters Wanda May of Show Low, Arizona, Debbie O’Neil of Arizona, Merle “Roger” Starr of Ketchikan, Alaska and many extended family members.

G. June Lesser Neibarger

A Celebration of Life service for G. June Neibarger, 69, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS. Private inurnment will be held at Hubbel Hill Cemetery in Tonganoxie, KS at a later date.

June died Sunday, December 5, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, following a lengthy illness. The body was cremated.

She was born August 4, 1941, in Platteville, Colo. She was one of eight children born to Frederick and Charlotte Miller Lesser. She grew up in the Greeley and Ft. Morgan, Colo. area and attended Fort Morgan High School. She moved to Kansas in 1964.

She married Jere J. Neibarger on Jan. 9, 1965, at the Congregational Church in Tonganoxie. They would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary in 2011.

June worked with her husband in several small businesses in Tonganoxie, DeSoto, and Overbrook. She worked for 17 years at Lawrence Memorial Hospital as an EKG Technician before her retirement in 2006.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, and one half-brother.

She is survived by her husband, of the home; two daughters, Katrina Rodriguez, husband Jose, and son Marcus of Greenwood, IN; Anna White, husband John, daughter Amanda and son Ethan, of Lawrence; one son, Derek, wife Christine, son Forrest, and daughter Ashley of Lawrence; two sisters, Bertha Weber and Helen Premer, and one brother Larry Lesser, all of Greeley, CO.; one half-brother, Fred Miller of Loveland, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

June was a loving and caring person who will be missed by her family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of The Oncology Center at LMH and everyone at LMH who cared for her during her final days.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Calista P. Orent

Graveside inurnment services for Calista P. Orent, 77, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Orent died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

She was born Oct. 15, 1933, in Alamota, Kan., the daughter of Jacob and Pauline Schlegel Diel. She grew up in Dighton, and graduated from Dighton High School. She received her RN degree from Newman Hospital in Emporia, Kansas

Mrs. Orent was a registered nurse, and was director of nursing at Watkins Hospital on the Kansas University Campus. She was a member of Unity Church of Lawrence.

She married Kenneth Orent in 1960. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer, Tillman, and Vernon Diel, and a sister, Marjorie Johnston.

Survivors include a son, Mark, Lawrence; a brother, Nathan Diel, Greer, S.C.; and two sisters, Dolores Trent, Farmington Hills, Mich., and Shirley Swenson, Tacoma, Wash.

Gary E. Mattson

A memorial service bonfire for Gary Mattson, 57, of Lawrence, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at 11628 254th St. in Leavenworth County, east of North Lawrence.
Mr. Mattson died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010.
He was born Sept. 11, 1953, in Minot, N.D., the son of A.A. and Clara Mattson. He served in the U.S. Army from 1974 to 1976 and was stationed in Germany.
He married Pam Gordon in 1982 and they divorced. Many years later he married Barbara Wheeler.
Survivors include a son, Andrew Mattson and fiancée Boni Biesheuvel, Lawrence; a grandson, Lucas A. Mattson; two sisters, Carolyn Hagel and Joan E. Mattson; a sister-in-law, Nancy Mattson; and several other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alan Mattson.
A memorial fund has been established through Amazing Grace Community Church, and donations in his name may be sent in care of the church at 1251 E. 1900 Road, Lawrence, KS 66046.

Joan Lorraine Howard

Graveside services for Joan Lorraine Howard, 76, Lawrence, will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ms. Howard died Wednesday, December 2, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 8, 1934, in Lawrence, the daughter of Walter Jr. and Elvie Raber Howard. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School.

Ms. Howard worked at Woolworth, Harwood Meats, and then at Hallmark for 37 years as a Tip Master. After her retirement, she worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter until her death. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a brother, John D. Howard and wife Sue, Lawrence; four sisters, Delores Howard and Sharon Patterson, Lawrence, Patricia Howard, Waverly, KS, and Glenda Wilkins and husband Harold, Perry, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Walter Leroy and infant Gerald Wayne.

LeRoy George Gross

Memorial services for LeRoy George Gross, 85, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kent Winters-Hazelton officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Gross died Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Ellis, the son of Frank and Mary Werth Gross. He grew up in Gorham, and graduated from Gorham High School. He moved to Lawrence in 1949.
He served in the United States Marine Corps, and received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and a Presidential Unit Citation. His unit, the 5th Marine Division, was the division that raised the historic American flag on Iwo Jima.
Mr. Gross worked for Nash Motors. In 1951, he began working for FMC, and retired as purchasing manager in 1975 due to health after 24 years of service.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Shriners International, the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post 852 and the 5th Marine Division. He was also a 50-year member of the Acacia Lodge No. 9 of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons.
He married Shirley Ann Jones on May 11, 1951, in Lawrence. She preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Ann Gross, two brothers, Fred and Virgil, and two sisters, Corinne Zorn and Jenny Roach.
Survivors include a daughter, Leann S. Gross, of the home; a sister, Virginia Dinkel, Russell; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
