Funeral services for Helen Louise Kern, 95, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2012 in the chapel of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bonner Springs Cemetery.
Ms. Kern died Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar in Lawrence.
She was born November 2, 1916 in Oskaloosa, Kansas, the daughter of Albert B. and Grace Wray May.
Ms. Kern graduated from high school and went on to attend business school in Topeka. She worked as a florist as well as a secretary for the school of engineering at the University of Kansas.
She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, and bird watching. Cardinals were her favorite. She attended the First United Methodist Church in Bonner Springs and later Plymouth Congregational in Lawrence.
Helen married William John Kern; he preceded her in death in 1980.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Sikes of Springfield, Virginia; four granddaughters, Sarah Pfundstein of Indianapolis, Indiana, Tiffany Sikes of Blacksburg, Virginia, Erin Bettis of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Heather Sikes of Washington D.C.; as well as a sister, Elaine Richter of Topeka, Kansas.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
