Joe Bryce Stroup, 83, Lawrence died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. A private family inurnment service is planned.
He was born Jan. 6, 1930, in Deer Creek, Okla., the son of Theodore T. and Nella Jo Crow Stroup. He graduated from Iola High School, and later from the University of Kansas. Joe served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Afterward, he joined Sun World Graphics in Kansas City. He graduated with a MFA from the University of Kansas in 1954.
In the mid 50’s, Joe joined the building/developing firm of Moore and Associates in Lawrence. Later, Joe started his own real estate, building, and property management businesses. Over the years, his companies developed several neighborhoods and constructed family homes and apartment complexes. In addition, he and his wife developed Apple Valley Farm at Lake Perry. Joe was known for his work ethic and creativity.
He married Kala Mays on May 28, 1960, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Chandler Stroup and wife Kimberly, Lawrence; a daughter, Megan Sappington, Jefferson City, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
