Viola Root Hadl Starkey

Viola Hadl Starkey 85, Eudora, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2012 with her children by her side. Private family graveside services will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Eudora with Father Pat Riley officiating.
Viola was born January 19, 1927 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was the seventh of twelve children born to Foster Randall Root and Ella Lorena Steichen. She grew up in Big Fork, Minn and Grand Rapids, Minn. Viola graduated in 1945 from Grand Rapids High School. She worked as an aide at the local hospital. She was just eighteen when she met Allan Edwin Hadl of rural Baldwin when he was a guard in the Army at nearby Camp Bena. They married Sept. 6, 1945 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. They moved to rural Baldwin then eventually moved to a farm in Eudora where they raised nine children. For many years Viola would take her children to Minnesota by train in the summer to visit her family. She was a homemaker. She also loved country music and enjoyed playing cards with family. She was also a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan, he died Sept. 29, 1967; a daughter, Jean Louise Hadl she died May 26, 1966; her parents, Foster and Ella Root; two sisters, Irene Stoltzman and Grace Bradford; and six brothers, Leonard, Melvin, Buster, Eugene, Billy and Russell. She married Wayne E. Starkey on Oct. 15, 1988. He passed away Nov. 28, 1994.
She is survived by two sons, Bill Hadl & Jim Hadl & Pam of Eudora, & six daughters; Betty Miller and Bob Ketchum of Lenexa, Marilyn Weeks & the late Jim Weeks, of Lawrence, Nancy & Jay Higbie, of Wellsville, Lori Hadl & Mike Marriott, of Gardner, Patricia & Bruce Gifford & Connie & Barry Larson all of Eudora. 19 grandchildren, Bill JR., Roxie, Sherry Jerry, Brad, Kari, Kim, Dave, Darrin, Shauna, Jamie, Brandy, Misty, Theresa, Travis, Brett, Seth, Kyle and Cole; 31 great grandchildren; and one great-great- granddaughter, Alexis Marie born April 13, 2012. She is also survived by two sisters, Norma Bartell of Grand Rapids, MN and Rosella Abbott of Oak Lawn, Illinois & a brother Walter Root of Big Fork, MN.
Viola will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by family and friends. The family would also like to thank the staff of Eudora Medicalodges and Grace Hospice. We appreciate all you have done.
