Wray Allen Spooner

A Visitation for Wray Allen Spooner, 77, Lawrence, will be from 10-11 Saturday Aug 19, 2017 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Tonganoxie at 11:30 am.

Mr Spooner was born January 15, 1940 in Lawrence, Ks to Paris Jason and Anna Mae (Mason) Spooner. He graduated Schloco Indian School in Oklahoma in May, 1958.

He retired as Senior Engineer from Kansas University Power Plant in 1996 after serving 31 years. He was a proud Sand Rat . He loved antique tractor shows and was an avid collector of model trains.

Wray is survived by his wife, Sondra Spooner of the home. He is also survived by 2 daughters Becky Taylor (Johnny) of Rose Bud Arkansas and Pamela Snow (Tony) of Las Vegas, Nv. 2 step children, Frank Smith (Jeanne) of Tonganoxie, Ks and Della Smith of Overland Park, Ks.

He is also survived by 5 grand children , Garret Taylor and Libby Taylor, Anthony Alcorn, Aaron Alcorn and Trevor Alcorn. Also 5 step grandchildren Jordan (Tracey) Smith, Brandon Smith, Justin Smith, Austin (Kayla) Smith, and E. J. Walter.

Wray is also servived by 3 great-grandchildren Treydan Smith, Coleton Smith and Jordi Smith. 5 step grandchildren.

Marilyn J. Crenshaw

Marilyn Crenshaw, a former resident of Anthony, KS, and since 2009, living in Lawrence, KS, died August 16, 2017, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday Sept 16, 2017 at Anthony United Methodist Church, Anthony KS.  As Marilyn donated her body for medical study to the KU Medical School, inurnment of her ashes at the Harper Cemetery will occur at a later date.

Marilyn was born Nov. 20, 1925 in rural Kennedy, N.Y., daughter of Harold W. and Helena Williams Spencer. She graduated from Randolph Central School, Randolph, N.Y. in 1943 and attended Buffalo State Teachers College, Buffalo, N.Y., receiving her B.S. degree in 1947 and her M.S. degree in 1956.

Marilyn taught home economics in schools in Cattaraugus, NY, and was teaching at Randolph Central School when she met Howard Crenshaw, who was at that time a student at Wesley Seminary in Washington, D.C. and serving a small student pastorate in Sharptown, N.J. Howard and Marilyn were married at the Kennedy Methodist Church July 3, 1960, following Howard’s graduation from seminary.

Upon returning to the Kansas West Conference of the United Methodist Church in May of 1961, Howard and Marilyn served churches in Turon/Langdon, Haven, Wichita East Heights, Oakley, Anthony, and Wichita-Dellrose. Upon Howard’s death in 1990 from leukemia, Marilyn returned to live in Anthony for 19 ½ years before moving to an apartment in Lawrence, to be near her son and her grandchildren.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her only sibling, Iris Hamilton of Bath, N.Y. She is survived by one son, Wesley, his wife Lucinda, and two grandchildren, Alyssa and Alexander, Lawrence, KS. Other survivors are a nephew, Michael Hamilton and niece, Martha Biener, both of Bath, N.Y., as well as several cousins and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be sent to the Howard Crenshaw scholarship fund at Southwestern College, Winfield, KS., Anthony United Methodist Church, or Youthville.

Donald Paul Turner

Donald Paul Turner, 81, of Lawrence, died August 15, 2017. He was born Jan 25, 1936 in Atchison, KS to Wilber & Eunice (Lien) Turner. He married his wife Armilda (Bonnie) Beebe on April 22, 1982 in Oskaloosa, KS . She died in 2014.

Mr. Turner was a Semi- Truck owner and operator and was self employed. He spent most of his life trucking and working on heavy equipment. He hauled many different types of product including chemical and rock. He enjoyed restoring old cars and restored several in his lifetime. Some of them he sold and some he gave away. He also loved fishing and camping.

Beloved family members include his children Vicki Ramirez, Brenda Clark, Susan Weideman, Lacilinn Turner (of the home), and a step-daughter Sally Thomson;  Brothers Bill, Ted, Richard, and James Turner; sisters Evelyn (Susie) Stamps, Nancy Harris, Betty Moon. He is preceded in death by his step-daughter Hallie Coole, and his wife Armilda.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 18th at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Oak Hill cemetery.

James Arthur Taylor

James Arthur Taylor, 91, Lawrence, died Monday, August 14, 2017, at the University of Kansas Hospital.

Mr. Taylor was born August 24, 1925 in Washington, Kansas, the son of Arthur George and Edith Selmer Taylor. He earned a B.S. at the University of Kansas in 1950 and went on to earn his D.D.S. at the University of Missouri in 1954.

He served during WWII as a member of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Sea Bees, and received a commission in the U.S. Infantry in 1950. Mr. Taylor practiced dentistry in Ft. Scott, Kansas from 1954-1985. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Lawrence Country Club, past member of various civic groups, and the Episcopal Church. Mr. Taylor enjoyed playing golf, bird watching, and fishing.

He married Delia Ann Neuitt in 1948; she preceded him in death in 1980. He married Sally Ann Kay and moved to Lawrence in 1986. She survives in their home.

Other survivors include 2 nephews, Dennis Tinkham of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Steve Taylor of Houston, Texas; niece, Susan Peters of Scandia, Kansas; and a step son, Brad Kay of Evergreen, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Hubert Jacob Taylor of Houston, Texas; a sister, Vivian Tinkham of Washington, Kansas.

Inurnment will take place at Ft. Scott National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Monte Allen Virtue

Funeral services for Monte Allen Virtue, 53, Eudora, will be 10 am Friday, August 18, 2017, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.Burial will follow at Hubble Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie. Monte died Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at his home from respiratory complications. He was born May 26, 1964 in Lawrence the son of Jack Louis and Beverly Jo Foley Virtue.
Monte was a 1982 graduate of Lawrence High School. Heattended diesel mechanic school in Wichita. He worked at several diesel shops and was working for Wilson Transport and Rock ‘N’ L Truck ‘N’, Eudora.
Monte was counted on by many and always went out of his way to help. He loved to fish,hunt, and anything outdoors. He raced modified stock cars in Kansas and Missouri during the 90s. He lived in the moment like there was no tomorrow. He never met a stranger and was always the life of the party. He found happiness in spending time with his daughters and was very proud of them. He was their world.
Survivors include his father Jack of Eudora, daughters Beverly Jo Virtue of Eudora, Sophia Klemme of Eudora, Natasha Lathrom of Lawrence, sister Tammy Wilson (Stan) of Eudora, brother Rick Virtue (Sheryl) of Lawrence, his companion Sandy Poeverlein of Eudora, nephews Chris Wilson, Bryon Virtue and niece Jessica Veit. He was preceded in death by his mother Beverly Jo Virtue on July 27, 1988.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 pm at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

JoDena D. Cron

JoDena Diane Burgen Cron passed away August 10, 2017 at her home. She was born November 22, 1957 in Topeka, Kansas to Jerry and JoAnn Burgen, Lawrence, who survive.
She moved to Lawrence as a child and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1975. She married Terry L. Cron on December 4, 1975. He survives of the home. JoDena worked for Valley View and Heritage Manor Nursing homes in the 80’s and 90’s and was the Office Manager for a doctor’s office in Lawrence before retiring in 2002.
She is also survived by her daughter, Missy (John) Elliott and son Travis (partner Jennifer) Cron all of Lawrence; brothers, Ronald (Linda) Burgen, Eskridge, KS, Donald (Wendy) Burgen, Shawnee, KS, Kirk Burgen, Lawrence, KS, Eric Burgen, Ottawa, KS, and her sister, Michelle (Keith) Countess, Lawrence, KS; her grandchildren Madison, Alec, Trianna, Nathaniel, and Makenzie, and a great grandson, Dean.
A visitation service will be held at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home on Sunday, August 13, 2017 from 3 – 5 pm with a cremation to follow. A Celebration of Life dinner will be held at a later date.

Peter Thomas Dougherty

Peter T. Dougherty, 80, Lawrence, KS, formerly of Prairie Village, KS, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2017 at the home, surrounded by family.

He was born in Kansas City, MO, and was a graduate of Rockhurst High School and College.  He participated in and enjoyed all sports.

Pete was preceded in death by his brother, James Dougherty SJ, sister Margaret Hodes and his son, Kevin.

Survivors include his loving wife, Ernestine (Ernie), son Patrick (Kathy), daughter, Deanne Arnote (Jay), step children, Janice Early, Nancy Spiegel, Neil Early, Keith Early, Chris Early, Teresa Riley, and sixteen grandchildren.

Pete willed his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center program. A memorial mass will be celebrated on August 19th at 11 am at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Prairie Village.

Janice Ann Dey

A Memorial service for Janice A. Dey, 79, Lawrence, will be 2 pm, Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Janice Dey passed away on 08-09-2017 in Lawrence, Kansas.  Cremation was chosen.

She was born to L. E. and Myrtle Merklin in St. Francis, Kansas.  Janice grew up in St. Francis and attended local schools.

Janice grew up as one of nine children, six brothers and 2 sisters.  Nadine (Miller), Leon, Dale, Charles and William Merklin and Janice (Dey), Gary and Marlin Merklin and Lenna (Studer).

She was married to Vernon Jarvis on October 1, 1956 in Colby, Kansas.  Six children were born from this union:  (Brenda Leigh, Kathleen Renae, Kent Edmond, Scott Alan, Carla Nadine and Charles Ray.  They divorced in 1970.

Janice enrolled in Colby community College in 1970 and continued in and graduated from Emporia State University College in 1975.

She married Delmar Dey in Strong City, Kansas in 1975.  They were divorced in 1992.

Janice retired from Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) after 28 years of service.

Preceding Janice in death were three children, Brenda, Scott and Charles, her parents and two sisters, three brothers and three nephews.

She is survived by three children, Kathleen & Denton Lehmann, Kent, and Carla & Bob Geddings, 5 grandsons, 7 granddaughters, and 14 great grandchildren.

Norma Jean Patterson Hall

Graveside services for Norma Jean Patterson Hall, 84, Lawrence, will be 2 pm, Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be from 1-1:45, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

She died Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Norma was born March 11, 1933, in Lawrence, the daughter of Earnest Taylor and Elodra Avella Dodge Patterson.

She married Alvia L. Hall in Lawrence on October 29, 1949, he preceded her in death.

She was an Excellent Bar Tender at every place she worked and everyone loved her. She retired in the 1980’s.

She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and loved to paint.

Survivors include her daughter Diana Tucker, Lawrence; sister, Pat Graham of Plano, TX; 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Daniel L. Hall and Dennis L. Hall; and grandson, Nathan L. Hall.
