V. Annette Pfunder

Memorial services for V. Annette Pfunder, 87, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday
at Stony Point Christian Church, 149 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kan., with Pastor David Emberson officiating. Inurnment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kan.

Mrs. Pfunder died Monday, June 20, 2011, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehabilitation in Baldwin City.

She was born July 19, 1923, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Marvin Claude and Dortha Zook Nowland. She graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1941.

Mrs. Pfunder lived and worked in Kansas City, Kan. until 1951, in Dodge City until 1956, in Great Bend until 1982, and in Lawrence until 2009. She was a member of Stony Point Christian Church, and enjoyed golf and bowling.

She married Kenneth S. Pfunder on Jan. 19, 1942, in Kansas City, Kan., and together they shared 61 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Larry D. Pfunder in 1993, and a brother, Forrest Wiley Nowland.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Denney and husband Jim, Lawrence; four grandchildren, Brian Denney and wife Heather, Elisa Hill and husband Andrew, Carrie McKee, and Carolyn Turner; and six great grandchildren, Hanna Denney, A.J. Hill, Raven McKee, and Tori, Sienna, and Sierra Turner.

Mary Elizabeth Henly

Memorial services for Mary Elizabeth Henly, 57, Lawrence, will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2011 in the chapel of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Ms. Henly died Friday, June 17, 2011 at her daughter’s residence.

She was born October 11, 1953 in Lawrence, Kansas, the daughter of Laverne and Pattie Marie Riley Hicks.

Ms. Henly enjoyed feeding and watching birds, she was an avid gardener, and very much enjoyed spending time with her daughter, grandchildren, family, and friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Kelly Henly; sisters, Laverna Hicks and Pamela S. Turner; brother, Scotty E. Scott; grandchildren, Samantha-Dayl E. Hiesberger, David D. Schumock, Shantele Bowlin Schumock, and Andrew Hiesberger; great-grandchildren, Arianna E. Hiesberger and Kayden J. Bowlin-Schumock; and nephews, Samuel Rodriguez and Joey Gipson.

Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 25th at the funeral home.

Marvin Don Donalson

Private family services for Marvin Don Donalson, 87, Lawrence, will be at a later date. Mr. Donalson died Friday, June 10, 2011, in Lawrence. He was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Hollis, Okla., the son of Malcolm and Jewell Curry Donalson.

He received a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Oklahoma in 1949 and a bachelor’s degree in hospital administration from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1975.

Mr. Donalson survived the European Theatre and Palermo, Italy, in the 15th Air Corps of the 454th Bomb Squadron during World War II. He worked for Kerr’s Department Store, Callaway’s Furniture and OK Furniture & Rug Co.. He was administrator of the Baptist Retirement Center in Oklahoma City and was assistant director for the Retirement Center Ministry of Oklahoma until his retirement.

Mr. Donalson was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lawrence and Oklahoma City and was a 32nd degree Mason.

He married Mildred Irma Poling on June 15, 1949, in Clovis, N.M. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, SallyDon and husband Craig Weinaug, Lawrence; a son, Robert and wife MaryBeth, Fort Worth, Texas; and nine grandchildren, Charles, RobertCarl, Amy and Clay Weinaug, Rebecca and Nathan Knight, Beth and Lee Hampton, and Jonathan Donalson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Randolph and Donald; and a sister, Myriage Donalson Wilson.

Kathryn L. Heck

Funeral services for Kathryn L. Heck, 89, Overland Park, formerly of Lawrence, will be held at 10am Tuesday, June 21, at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Heck died Friday at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park. She was born Aug. 26, 1921 in Lawrence the daughter of Charles Arthur and Ruby Alma McLean Wise.

Mrs. Heck was a life long Lawrence area resident. She attended Bismark Grade School and graduated from Liberty Memorial High in 1939. After high school she attended the University of Kansas and Lawrence Business College. Kathryn was a homemaker and enjoyed many bridge groups. Family was her life, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She married Howard F. Heck on January 25, 1942, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death on Oct. 25, 1985. For many years they farmed and raised cattle north of Lawrence.

Mrs. Heck was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Dick Wise, and a sister Helen Heck Taylor.

Survivors include a son Fred Heck of Ottawa, daughters Sherry Nelson and husband David of Lawrence, and Becky Isaac and husband Larry of Overland Park, grandchildren Lisa Talley, Missi Carpenter, Kelli Curry and Kristi Stallings, and 6 great-grandchildren, Brandi, Haley, Kassie, Regan, Reese and Colton.

Elizabeth E. Underwood

Memorial services for Elizabeth E. Underwood, 83, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, with the Rev. Daniel Norwood officiating.

Mrs. Underwood died Monday, June 13, 2011, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

She was born July 25, 1927, in Galesburg, Kan., the daughter of Homer N. and Estella Eccles Shaw.

Mrs. Underwood was the administrative assistant to the plant manager at Farmland Industries for over 40 years. She also volunteered with physical therapy for 20 years, and for the American Red Cross for over 30 years. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, and was a Paul Harris fellow with Rotary International.

She married Bill Underwood, and together they shared 42 years of marriage. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Kesler, Austin, Tex., and James R. Shreve, Lawrence; and two daughters, Karen Goforth-Walker, Tampa, Fla., and Estreya Kesler, Napa Valley, Calif.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Carol D. Parker Bevens

Memorial services for Carol D. Parker Bevens, 78, Gardner, formerly of Lawrence and Pomona, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory. Inurnment will follow at Eudora City Cemetery.

Mrs. Bevens died Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Medicalodges Gardner.

She was born Mar. 15, 1933, in Lawrence, the daughter of Charles R. and Bessie Meadows Parker. She attended Liberty Memorial High School.

Mrs. Bevens was a nursing assistant at Valley View Nursing Home. She enjoyed art and sketching.

She married Zelma Eugene “Gene” “Beve” Bevens. He preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Jean Bevens in 1969, and a grandson, Guy Edwards III.

Survivors include three children, Guy Edwards Jr., Pomona, Nancy Asher and husband Garry, Lawrence, and Charles W. Bevens, Harris, Kan.; a brother, Charles R. Parker Jr., Oskaloosa; a sister, Janet K. Girnius, McLouth; 13 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

James Lee Tucker

No public services are planned for James Lee Tucker, 73, Anderson, Calif.

Mr. Tucker died Saturday, June 11, 2011, at the home of his mother-in-law, Mildred Bernice Leffler, in rural Douglas County.

Survivors include his wife, Carole S. Beadnell-Tucker, of the home.

Doris J. (Huffman) Sanderson

Inurnment services for Doris J. (Huffman) Sanderson, 88, Lawrence will be 1:00pm Tuesday, June 14, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Sedalia, MO. She died Thursday June 9, 2011 at Pioneer Ridge Health Care. She was born May 17, 1923 in Ozawkie, KS. the daughter of William and Opal Cunning Metzger.

Mrs. Sanderson attended Southern Missouri College and received her Registered Nursing degree. She worked Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia for many years retiring in 1985 as a nursing supervisor.

She married Robert “Bob” Sanderson, who survives of the home, and Norman C. Huffman who preceded her in death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Cheryl Huffman, granddaughter Lori Devorss, brothers Kenneth, Doren, and Delbert Metzer, sisters Hazel Felt, Evelyn Phillipi, Patricia Coyle, Lois Blankenship, and Sue Ellen Metzger.

Survivors will include daughters Carol Smith of Sedalia, Patty Thomas of Belton, MO, and Carol Cheek of Lawrence, a brother Marvin Metzger of Lawrence, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Stephens

Memorial services for Mary Elizabeth Stephens, 83, Lawrence, will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011 at Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Robert Baldwin presiding. Inurnment will be in the Trinity Episcopal Church Columbarium.

Mrs. Stephens died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born August 20, 1927 in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Walter E. and Minnie Mae Peyton Durett. She graduated from Central High School in Memphis, Tennessee. She studied at the Juilliard Institute of Music in New York, under Virgil Fox. She received a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of North Texas, where she studied under Silvio Scionti. She also earned a masters degree in music at the University of Kansas. She moved with her family to Lawrence in 1968 from Victoria, Texas.

Mrs. Stephens worked as a pianist and choir director at the First Christian Church, then as the choir director at the First English Lutheran Church, and then as the organist and choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Church, and was an instructor of piano and organ at the Victoria College, she also had a private studio for piano and organ in Victoria, TX. She was the choir director at the Vernon Texas Music Club, earned her service playing certificate and was a member of the American Guild of Organists, charter member of the Phi Tau chapter of the Mu Phi Epsilon a professional music fraternity, member of Pi Kappa Lambda a honorary music fraternity, member of Association of Anglican Musicians, Lawrence Music Club, and the Peyton Society.

She planned to retire at the end of this year as organist of Trinity Episcopal Church after 40 years of service.

She married William James Stephens November 19, 1946, they celebrated 62 years together. He died in 2008.

Survivors include sons, William James Stephens, III and wife Marilyn, Honey Grove, TX, Guy W. Stephens and wife Janet of Aurora, IL; daughters, Cecily Stephens, Pittsburg, KS, Shirley Stephens-Mock and husband Stuart, Golden, CO, Amy Monroy, Kansas City, KS; sister Mae Hoag, Orinda, CA; grandchildren, Matthew, Hannah, and Scott Stephens, Elsa Monroy; great-grandchildren, Saxon and Jagar Stephens.

The family suggests memorials to the William and Elizabeth Stephens Music Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church, sent in care of the funeral home.

Marjean Kathleen Klotz

No public services are planned at this time for Marjean K. Klotz, 78, Lawrence.

Mrs. Klotz died Monday, May 30, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Topeka, the daughter of Estel and Lena Owen Macey. She graduated from Topeka High School.

Mrs. Klotz worked for Lawrence Unified School District #497 at West Junior High, South Junior High, and Lawrence High School from 1973 to 1988 as a cashier and baker. She later worked for Ed Marling’s Home Furnishings from 1988 to 1995.

She married Edgar V. “Eddie” Klotz on Apr. 29, 1951, in Topeka. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include four children, Connie (Fox) Van Horne, Las Vegas, Allen Klotz, Murphy, Tex., Craig Klotz, Lawrence, and Robert Klotz, Kissimmee, Fla; a sister, Joyce Macey Feldstein Popham, Bedford, Tex.; seven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Per Mrs. Klotz’s wishes, there will be a joint memorial service upon the occasion of Mr. Klotz’s death.
