Dale Ann Fabriz

A memorial visitation for Dale Ann Fabriz, 63, Lawrence, will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mrs. Fabriz died Friday, July 22, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

She was born Mar. 14, 1948, in Emporia, the daughter of John O. and Margaret Sattler Wagner. She graduated from Lawrence High School.

Mrs. Fabriz was employed by Hallmark Cards as a multi-press operator, and retired in 2004 after 38 years of service. She enjoyed playing softball at an early age, and later enjoyed gardening, camping, and spending time with family and her dog, Jack.

She married John Fabriz on Aug. 4, 1978, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1983. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Tracy Fabriz, a brother, Johnny Wagner, and a sister, Linda Jones.

Survivors include a daughter, Tiffany Fabriz, Lawrence; a brother, Jay Wagner (Betty), Lawrence; a granddaughter, Maya; 3 nieces and 9 nephews.

Eileen Ellenbecker

Eileen “Babe” Agatha Ellenbecker(90) passed away at her home in Lawrence, Kansas on July 18, 2011 from heart failure.

Eileen was born in Hanover, Kansas on September 18, 1920. She was the youngest daughter of Jerome and Catherine (Greiveldinger) Brychta and from an early age became known as “Babe” to both family and friends. Babe attended country schools near Bremen, Kansas and graduated from Hanover High School. After high school she joined her older sisters in Kansas City where she received her teaching certificate and returned to her home town to teach in a one room school house. She moved to Lawrence in September, 2000.

Babe married Leo Ellenbecker on June 5, 1946 in Hanover. They lived on the family farm west of Marysville where they raised three sons and five daughters: Joe of Lawrence (wife Sherry); Mike of Eagan, Minnesota (wife Barb), Philip of Joplin, Missouri; Sandra File of Lawrence (husband Brad); Celeste Pierce of Overland Park (husband Hal); Robyn Ice of Lawrence (husband Lee); Mary Kay Scanlon of Lenexa (husband John), and Denice Guthrie of Fredonia (husband Alan). Babe’s 18 grandchildren are Bix, Ginger and Max Ellenbecker; Ben and Jack Ellenbecker, Coleman and Adam File, Hallie, Zack and Aaron Pierce, Austin, Sydney and Allison Ice, Casey and Shea Scanlon, and Colby, Dylan and Emily Guthrie. She is also survived by her sister-in-laws Buena Ellenbecker, Dolly Ellenbecker, Ann Brychta and many nieces and nephews.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, infant sons, Dennis and Dwight and her siblings, Arnold Brychta, Sydonia Brychta, Laura Brychta Russell, Leon Brychta, Nell Brychta, Cecilia Brychta, Marie Brychta Benda, Eveline Brychta Duncan, Elizabeth Brychta Jueneman Hasse, Millie and Marcella Brychta Finn.

Eileen was known as a prolific gardener and was a wonderful cook and baker. Grandma’s fried chicken was a favorite among the grandchildren who always knew there would be fried chicken, fresh home baked bread and plenty of cookies whenever they visited. The birth of each grandchild was welcomed by grandma who came to spend at least a week – she delighted in giving each their first bath at home.

Eileen was an avid KU fan and loved gathering with the family to watch
the Jayhawks. She was delighted to be part of the Mass St. celebrations
as KU marched to their NCAA Championship in 2008.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 20 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Marysville, KS., inurnment in St. Gregory’s Cemetery.

Donations in her name can be made to Visiting Nurses, 200 Maine St. Lawrence, KS 66044, or to St. Gregory’s Grade School, Marysville, KS.

Augusta “Gussie” Flory

Graveside services for Augusta F. “Gussie” Flory, 83, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Washington Creek Cemetery in southwestern Douglas County.

Mrs. Flory died Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Clinton, Kan., the daughter of Vitus and Fern Augusta French Hadl. She attended Liberty Memorial High School, and graduated from Lawrence High School.

Mrs. Flory was a secretary for the Kansas Department of Revenue, and retired in 1992 after 15 years of service. She was a member of Lone Star Church of the Brethren, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She married Francis C. Flory on June 10, 1944. He preceded her in death on June 4, 1975. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Carter.

Survivors include a son, James Flory and wife Donna, Lawrence; a daughter, Marilyn Gibbs and husband Roy, Suwanee, Ga.; two sisters, Marjorie Wilson and husband Earl, Lawrence, and Jeanette Auchard and husband Dr. V. Allen, Bucyrus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Fred Smith, Louise Flory, Mindi Raby, and Lisa Richardson; and four great grandchildren, Alton and Ashley Chaney, and Lily and George Raby.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The casket will remain closed.

Ann Kirkpatrick Mackie

Memorial services for Ann Kirkpatrick “Onna” Mackie, 87, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall Ave., Mission, Kan.

Mrs. Mackie died Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Bridge Haven Care Cottage, Lawrence.

She was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Neosho, Mo., the daughter of Voyle Vernell and Mariana Wills Kirkpatrick. She was raised in Kansas City, Mo., attended Border Star Elementary School, and graduated from Southwest High School. She later attended the University of Missouri, but returned to Kansas City before graduating and went to work for Woolf Brothers. It was then that her mother decided to fix her up with William R. “Bill” Mackie, whom she married on Aug. 5, 1949.

Mrs. Mackie went back to college, and in 1987 at the age of 63, she graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Art History, on the exact date of the 50th anniversary of Bill’s graduation from KU. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include four children, Elizabeth Orrick, Omaha, George Mackie and wife Pennylea, Boise, Mary Ann Mackie, Seattle, and Willie Mackie, Baldwin City; eight grandchildren, Jenna Mackie, Lindsay Wall, Scott Orrick, Timothy Mackie, David Orrick, Gaelan Mackie, Halley Mackie, and Hannah Mackie; seven great grandchildren, Lola Wall, Lena Mackie, Annabelle Wall, Simona Mackie, Carina McCall, Meira McCall, and Emmaline Wall; a sister, Jane LaPlante; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert L. Sanderson

Military and inurnment services for Robert L. Sanderson, 89, Lawrence will be at 10am. Tuesday July 5th. at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Sanderson died Wednesday, June 29th at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 28th, 1921 in Wray, CO, the son of James Elvis and Frances Ann Smedley Sanderson. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1939.

Mr. Sanderson served in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he received the Good Conduct Medal, and the American Theater Service Medal.

He was a life member of the VFW.

Mr. Sanderson is survived by four daughters: Carol Cheek and husband Michael of Lawrence, Betty Stellwagen and husband Larry of Perry, Patty Thomas and husband Bert of Belton MO., and Carol Smith of Sedalia MO., one sister: Ethel Mae McKelvey of Lawrence, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three wives: Doris Jean Metzger, Gladys Elizabeth Groninger, and Eunice Margaret Maxwell. two sisters: Eva Gladys Shore, and Ella Elma Russell, one son: Arthur Tarpy Jr., and two daughters: Mary Kreeger, and Lorene Mitchell.

Harold Dean Wilkins

Services for Harold Dean Wilkins, 63, Perry, will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Wilkins died Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 25, 1948, in Bennington, Oklahoma, the son of George Andrew and Rena Dimple McIntyre Wilkins. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1966. He has lived in the Lawrence area since 1963.

Mr. Wilkins served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was a material handler at Berry Plastics. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed playing pool, cards, singing karaoke, all sports, KU Jayhawks, and in his younger years he was a great baseball player.

He married Glenda Kay Howard in August of 1970, in Ottawa, KS. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include, 2 sons, Michael Dean Wilkins and his wife Candy, Perry, Eric Matthew Wilkins and wife Crystal, Perry; brothers, Jimmy Ray Wilkins and wife Judy, Lawrence, Jerry Edward Wilkins and wife Lila, Fayetteville, NC; sisters, Lorene Minyard, Brownfield, TX, Jewell Rogers and husband Bill, Galena, KS; grandchildren, Skye, Michelle, Ivy, Marissa, and Jacob, all of Perry, Jenny and Tanya, of Lawrence; great-granddaughter, Cassie, of Lawrence.

He was preceded in death by brothers George Leon Wilkins, Robert Dale Wilkins, and Victor James Wilkins; sisters, Ada Mae Walker and Nona Lee Middleton.

Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

The family suggests memorials to the Colmery-O’neil VA Medical Center in Topeka.

Betty Kieffer Lessenden

Inurnment services for Betty Kieffer Lessenden, Lawrence will be 10am. Thursday July 7, 2011 at Pioneer Cemetery, University of Kansas West Campus.

She was born in Lawrence, the daughter of Fred H. Kieffer and Fern Whitsitt Kieffer.

Mrs. Lessenden graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence. Following graduation from high school, she obtained her degree in microbiology from the University of Kansas, and subsequently worked as a microbiologist in Toledo, Ohio. She was known locally as a studio potter for many years.

She married Glenn Lessenden, MD, in 1947, he preceded her in death in 1989.

Mrs. Lessenden was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, Kansas, Chapter EA of the PEO Sisterhood, and Chapter Phi (University of Kansas) of Alpha Chi Omega. She served as a member of the College Advisory Board for the University of Kansas College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for five years. She was formerly a member of the Douglas County Medical Society Auxiliary and the Kansas State Medical Society Auxiliary. She was a long-time member of the Lawrence Art Guild, the Lawrence Potter’s Guild, and the Kansas Artists Craftsman’s Association. She was a Lifetime Member of the University of Kansas Alumni Association, and a member of the University of Kansas Gold Medal Club. She volunteered for many years at the Ballard Center and for LINK.

She is survived by her two children, Dr. Glenn A. Lessenden, Jr, DVM, Platte City, Missouri, and Judy Lessenden, MHSA, Overland Park, Kansas. She has two grandsons, Michael and Alan, one great-grandson, Connor, and one great-granddaughter, Rylee, and a sister, Ruth Stohs, Lawrence, Kansas.

There will be a reception following the inurnment at the Depot, (Lawrence Visitor Center) 402 N. 2nd St.

Alexandra Mason

Graveside inurnment services for Alexandra Mason, 80, Lawrence, will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at Pioneer Cemetery on the University of Kansas campus. Ms. Mason died Friday, June 24, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 17, 1931, in Greenfield, Mass., the daughter of Herbert E. and Anna E. Thorndike Mason.
Ms. Mason graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1952 with an AB in Greek. She earned her Masters of Library Sciences in 1955 from the Carnegie Library School, and also did post-graduate work at Durham University in Durham, England and the famed Bodleian Library at Oxford University in Oxford, England.
Highlights of her career include: 1975-1999: Head of Special Collections (Rare Books) for Spencer Research Library; Recipient of the very first Chancellor’s Distinguished Librarianship Award in 1990; Inductee into the University of Kansas Women’s Hall of Fame in 1980; Reference librarian for the World Book Encyclopedia in Chicago for one year before coming to Lawrence in 1957. Mason was a member of the KU graduate faculty and spent time as a Courtesy Professor of English and also served as a mentor in the University Scholars program.
Ms. Mason was the co-author or author of 4 books, 17 articles, and over a dozen scholarly papers. After 42 wonderful years with the University of Kansas, Mason retired in 1999 and The Rubenstein/Mason Fund for the Library was named partially in her honor. A quote about Mason from the KU Women’s Hall of Fame website says: “She has ever been an active and highly effective participant in many good and moral causes, for example, women’s rights and intellectual freedom… she simply lived her beliefs and convinced others of their rectitude by her example.”
She is survived by her lifetime friend, Ann Hyde and a brother, E. Eugene Mason, Greenfield, Mass. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline, Edith, and Helen.

Carolyn Louise Hussey

A memorial gathering for Carolyn Louise Hussey, 68, Lawrence will be at 6pm. to 7pm. Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Mrs. Hussey died Thursday June 23, 2011 at her son’s home in Ozawkie. She was born Jan. 28, 1943 in Maryville, MO. the daughter of Paul and Mary Gilbert Dredge.

Mrs. Hussey graduated from Tonganoxie High School in 1962 and later lived in Lawrence and Topeka.

She married Bob Wingert, they divorced, she married Harold Hussey and he preceded her in death.

She loved her family, friends, animals, flower gardens, garage saling and baseball.

Survivors include a son Troy Hussey and wife Stephanie of Ozawkie, daughter Tiffany Kuester and husband Jim of Lawrence, three younger brothers Sonny Dredge, Don Dredge and wife Sharon, and David Dredge and wife Ann, all of Maryville, Mo.

Paul Charles Buske

Memorial services for Paul Charles Buske, 40, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, La.

Mr. Buske died Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 14, 1970, in Bloomington, Ill., the son of John M. and Elizabeth “Beth” A. Duguid Buske. He graduated from Paris, Ill. High School, and later attended Louisiana Tech.

Mr. Buske held various positions with the Nestle Company for 15 years. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed golf and fishing.

He married Megan N. Smith on June 19, 2004, in Greensboro, N.C. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Cooper, of the home; his parents, Ruston, La.; a brother, Michael Buske and wife Shelley, Terre Haute, Ind.; a sister, Christine McIntosh and husband Glenn, Shreveport, La.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.
