Sara Ruth Davenport

Graveside inurnment for Sara Ruth Bouton Wilson Davenport, 92, will be at 1 pm Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence, KS. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 pm Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.

She passed away peacefully on April 9th, at home with her family by her side. The world is a better place because of the almost 93 years she lived on it. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have her influence on our lives are better because of the experience.

Mrs. Davenport was born April 16, 1923, in Richland, Kan., the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Lamb Bouton. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1940.
She married Francis Wilson on January 19, 1941 in Lawrence. He died January 23,1973. She married Wayne Davenport on April 9, 1976, in Lawrence, and he preceded her in death on March 12, 2014.

Survivors include one daughter Sharon Miller, Lawrence; one son Steven Wilson and wife Marcia, Perry; one stepdaughter-in-law Linda Comstock, Knob Noster, MO; three grandchildren Elisa Edgar Loving Kay, Shannon Heston, and Haley Winfrey; 6 great grandchildren, Braxton Loving, Jessica Kay, Barrett and Harper Heston, Kennedy and Harrison Winfrey, four step-grandchildren, Dwayne Comstock, Kyle Twogood, Jill Christian and Kim Twogood and 8 step-great grandchildren; two sisters, Joan Peavler, Topeka, and Lois Helm (Lee), Lawrence, and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Darrell and Edwin Bouton, son-in-law Frank Miller, stepdaughter, Jane Twogood and stepson Philip Comstock.
She was a homemaker, babysitter, gardener, camper, seamstress and wonderful cook. She loved crocheting, doing crafts, playing cards and games with friends and family, attending grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities, Jayhawk basketball and most of all, her family.

Dorothy Maxine “Mickey” Lingenfelser

Graveside services for Dorothy Maxine “Mickey” Lingenfelser, 85, Tonganoxie, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Maceo Gray officiating.

Ms. Lingenfelser died Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Tonganoxie Nursing & Rehab.

She was born September 24, 1930, in Lawrence, the daughter of Delbert Merle and Nellie Irene Church Beers.

Ms. Lingenfelser was a homemaker. She enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, working on word puzzles, and collecting cows.

She is survived by four children, Gloria Jean Curtis of Kansas City, MO, Charles Richard Lingenfelser and wife Joy of Grandview, MO, John Howard Lingenfelser and wife Tracy of Lawrence, and Dorothy Anne Niver and husband James of Baldwin City, KS; a sister, Margie Hummelgaard of Tonganoxie, KS; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Amos A. “Andre” Sanders

Graveside services for Andre Sanders will be at 11 am Friday, April 15, 2016, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence. The family will meet with friends Friday from 10 am until we leave for the cemetery.

Amos “Andre” Sanders passed away unexpectedly on April 11, 2016 at Stormont Vail in Topeka Kansas. Amos was born April 21, 1969 to the late Richard Chanvers and Pauline Sanders. Amos was raised in Hollandale, Mississippi before moving to Lawrence, Kansas. Amos graduated from Lawrence High School in 1989 and later graduated from Kaw Valley Area Technical School in 1999, becoming a certified auto mechanic. Amos enjoyed working on cars, hunting and fishing trips, and spending time with family and friends. He was a proud new first- time grandpa and loved spending time with baby Corey.

Amos was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Pauline, and his grandparents Rose and L.T. Simmons, and Georgia Mae and Willie Sanders. Amos is survived by his children Brandon Turner, Alyssa Jones, Justine Craig, and Diondre Jones-Sanders, as well as step children Taylor and Cassidi Jones, and former step daughter Kinisha Bridgewater. Amos was also survived by one grandchild, Corey Javon Jones. Amos is also survived by his aunts Minnie Brown, Mammie Robinson, Perthinia Paul, Betty Marshall, Nellie Mae Murrell, and Margaret Plymer. Surviving uncles include George Marshall, Roy Simmons, Zack Sanders and Lionel Sanders as well as many cousins.

Amos will be greatly missed but will live on in our hearts.

James Vardiman “Jim” Owens

A memorial celebration for James Vardiman Owens will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church at 11:00 on April 15th. Jim died on March 7th at the Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living facility. He was 100 years old.

Jim Owens was born on November 4, 1915 to Sam and Effie Owens in Richland, a town 15 miles southwest of Lawrence that now lies beneath Clinton Lake. He spent most of his youth in Salina.

Jim received an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1937 and a master’s degree in business from the University of Iowa in 1939. While attending KU, James Naismith was his instructor for a health class, during Dr. Naismith’s final year of teaching.

It was also at KU that he met Laura Humphrey of Eskridge, and they were married in 1940 in Miami, Florida, where Jim worked for Pan American Airways. He continued his brief career with Pan Am in New York City, before moving to Lawrence in 1945, where he and Laura purchased and operated a florist business at 9th and Massachusetts and a greenhouse at 15th and New York. They eventually relocated Owens’ Flower Shop to its present location at 9th and Indiana. The couple sold the business in 1974. Laura Owens died in 2004, after 63 years of marriage.

During a very busy life, Jim served on numerous boards and commissions, and remains the only person to have served as mayor of Lawrence (1964-1965), president of the board of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce (1966-1967) and president of the Lawrence Board of Education (1968-1969). He also served on the Lawrence Recreation Commission (1960-1964) and on the Lawrence Human Relations Commission during some turbulent times in the mid to late 1960s. Jim was a member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Lawrence for 25 years, Deacon and Moderator at Plymouth Congregational Church, a Lawrence Sesquicentennial Committee member, fundraiser for the Lawrence Arts Center and was a long-time member of the Lawrence Rotary Club.

Jim received many honors during his lifetime, including the Kiwanis Club’s Certificate of Recognition, Sertoma’s Service to Mankind award, Baker University’s Service Award and the Citizen of the Years award from the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Lawrence Rotary Club, and was inducted into the Lawrence Business Hall of Fame.

Jim loved to travel, and was fortunate to have been able to visit many parts of this country, and the world. He was a good listener, truly enjoying conversations with everyone he met. He embraced change, including technological change, and was always eager to learn something new. Jim Owens enjoyed life, and will be missed by many.

Jim is survived by two children: Martin (Kay) Owens of Lee’s Summit, Missouri and Laura (Bob) Schulte of Kansas City, Missouri. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Kelvin (Andrea) Owens of Springfield, Illinois; Angie (Brett) Gruetzmacher of Brookfield, Wisconsin; Abigail (Bryce) Crady of Westwood Hills, Kansas; Andrew (Meghan) Schulte of Washington, D.C.; Evan (Akiko) Schulte of Komatsu, Japan and seven great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Justine.

The family wishes to express its true appreciation to the management and staff of Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living for the support and kindness they showed to Jim.

Barbara Grammer

Graveside services for Barbara Jean Hiddleston Grammer, 75, Lawrence, will be 12:15 pm Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, south of Lawrence. A visitation will be from 11 am to noon Tuesday at Rumsey¬Yost Funeral Home.

She died Wednesday April 6, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Barbara was born March 18, 1941, in Pittsburg, KS, the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy Beard Hiddleston. She graduated from Vinland High School.
She was a teacher’s aide at Woodlawn School, data clerk and research assistant at KU, and had a day care in her home for over 30 years.

Barbara married Samuel F. “Fred” Grammer on June 6, 1959. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include Holly Siler, Lawrence, Larry Grammer, Ottawa; grandchildren Brandon Siler, Lawrence, Crista and Dreya Grammer, Ottawa; brother Bob Hiddleston, Lawrence; two sisters Sharon Bunce, Lecompton, Isse Bergstrom, Perry.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter in 1960

Dallas K. Murphy

Funeral services with honors for Dallas K. Murphy, 82, Lawrence, will be at 11 am Monday at Plymouth Congregational Church, with Rev. Dr. Peter Luckey and Chaplain Paul Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Vinland Cemetery. Dallas died Tuesday, Apr. 5, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 19, 1933, in Cortez, Colo., the son of Eloise Beck. He was raised in Ellsworth, Kan., and graduated from high school there in 1951. He served for many years in the Army National Guard and the Reserves, 35th Infantry Division, and later graduated from several law enforcement training academies. Dallas served with the Kansas Highway Patrol for 14 years (1956-70) and served with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years (1970-91) where he served in the capacities of deputy, supervisor, Undersheriff, and Jail Administrator, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. Upon retirement, he served with the United States Marshal’s Service for eight years (1993-2001). He was a member of several professional organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge #2, Kansas Sheriff’s Association, Kansas Trooper’s Association, Kansas Peace Officers Association, and the Capitol Area Major Case Squad. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Abdallah Shriners, Rotary, Sertoma Club, and NRA. He enjoyed horses, boating, and pistol shooting.

Dallas married Barbara J. Wrench on July 5, 1958, in Lawrence. They later divorced. Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Bohmann, Lawrence, and Lisa Showalter and husband Jeff, also of Lawrence; and three grandchildren, Blake Bohmann and wife Katie, Brett Bohmann, and Sarah Showalter.

Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Saturday and Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them Sunday from 2-4 pm. LeRoy B. Cosby

Leroy B. Cosby, 91, died on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Facility in Lawrence, KS. He was proceed in death by his wife Mary Frances Cosby, to whom he was married for 67 years.

He is survived by his two daughters, Beverly Duffel and Linda Neutel (husband JR) and four grandchildren, Will Duffel, Ben Duffel, Clay Duffel and Marilee Neutel. Leroy graduated from Memphis State College with a Bachelor of Education. He served in the Army and was a WWII Veteran. He retired as a successful salesperson with Singer Sewing Machines, Memphis Furniture, was owner of Cosby Furniture located in Memphis, TN. , and sold residential real estate for Creye-Lieke as well built homes.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 9th from 1-2pm, with the service following at Memphis Funeral Home, 3700 N. Germantown Parkway in Bartlett. The family requests memorial gifts to be sent to Grace Hospice, 1420 Wakarusa Dr. #202, Lawrence, KS. 66049.

Virginia Rose (Brown) Little

Virginia (Brown) Little died peacefully at home on Apr. 1, 2016, surrounded by those who loved her. Private services and inurnment will be held at a later date.

Virginia was born Apr. 4, 1936, in Lawrence, the daughter of Dorance G. Brown and Rose Copp. She grew up in the Lawrence area, and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1954. She was employed by Hallmark Cards, and retired in 1999 after 30 years of service.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Robert, David, and Dorance Brown, and one son, Clyde A. Little II on Nov. 19, 2002. She is survived by two brothers, Donald (Mary) Brown, and James (Ann) Brown, and one sister, Shirley (John) Sparks; daughters Naoma McElroy, Bonnye Little-Hadl (George), and Kimberlye Halderman; sons Dorance and Dorse; ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was passionate about friends, family, her flowers, and the birds she attracted to her yard to keep her entertained. She was a wonderful caring mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be genuinely missed by all of those who were blessed to have known her.

Travis Kent Tichenor

Memorial services for Travis Kent Tichenor, 29, Lawrence, will be at 10 am Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, both in Lawrence, KS.

He passed on March 27, 2016, at his home.

Travis was born January 14, 1987, in Topeka, KS. His parents are: Janelle Slocum of Topeka, Ks and Brian and Bobbi Tichenor of Lawrence, KS.

Survivors besides parents include: wife, Rachel (Stout) Tichenor, his children Owen (8), Eli (4), and Myla (2), Abilene, Ks. His two brothers, Eric (Cassandra) Tichenor and Kyle Tichenor, Lawrence, KS. Grandparents include: Joye Slocum, Arloa Tichenor, Bob & Janis Henderson, Topeka, KS. Nephew, Liam Tichenor, Lawrence KS. Other survivors include: aunts, uncles and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by Grandfathers: Orwin (Newt) Slocum & Dean Tichenor.

Travis graduated in 2005 from Free State High School in Lawrence. In the years to follow he had been employed by several banks and was currently employed by Kmart Distribution Center in Lawrence. He looked forward to his new position at Fairway Mortgage.

Travis loved his family deeply, especially his 3 beautiful children. He enjoyed his sports, KU basketball, Royals and Chiefs. Travis was very personable and easily made friends anywhere he went.
