Helen Delores Hess

Visitation will be held for Helen Delores Hess, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Graveside services for Helen will be held at 11:00 a.m., January 24, 2022, at Underwood Cemetery, 14828 Highway 24, Perry, Kansas. She passed away at her home surrounded by family on January 19, 2022.

Helen was born on January 7, 1932, to Thomas McCall and Waneta McCall Deskins in Lawrence Kansas. She married Albert E. Hess. They celebrated 72 years of marriage on June 25, 2021. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include her children, David Hess (Becky Hess) of Magazine, Arkansas and Lisa Goetz (Morey Goetz) of Austin, Texas, her grandchildren, Carey Hess Clemons, Brian Hess, Drew Hess, Jacob Hess, Jeremy Hess, Bethany Hess, Adam Hess, Sarah Hess, Dustin Hess, Jonathan Hess, Scott Goetz and Kelly Goetz. She had 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sons, Dale Hess (Mary Luanne Hess) and Larry Hess (Catherine Hess).

Helen was a devoted wife and loving mother. She was the matriarch of the family and passed along her wisdom when asked. Helen was a devout Christian who spent her life living what she believed. She was a member and fellowshipped at First Church of the Nazarene. Helen worked at Hallmark Cards located in Lawrence, Kansas for 22 years in many different departments. She then worked at Dillons and Weaver’s after retirement.

Helen was quick to laugh and hug. She was patient and generous. She found great joy in her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grand-children. Helen loved to quilt and created several works of pure art over the years. If you were lucky you would open up one of these treasures as a gift. Helen was a woman of great faith and strength.

She will be missed and thought of often by those who were blessed enough to be in her circle of love.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to First Church of the Nazarene Tusouge Ministries and may be sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Georgia Helen Hess

Funeral services for Georgia Helen Hess, 103, Lawrence, will be at noon Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Norwood officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.  Mrs. Hess died Saturday, Mar. 15, 2014, at Drury Place at Alvamar.

She was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Ben and Nell Underwood Inverarity. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School.  Georgia was employed by First National Bank for 27 years, and retired as manager of the south branch.  She has been a member of Centenary United Methodist Church since 1935.  She was also a member of the Fidelity Shrine #11 of Lawrence, Toltec Chapter 1 of Topeka, Order of the Eastern Star Evangeline Chapter 162 of Baldwin City, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She married Carl F. Hess. He preceded her in death in 1959, as did a daughter, Helen Page-Smith in 2006, a son, William G. ‘Bill’ Hess in 1999, and two great grandchildren.  Survivors include four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren, and two step great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 11 am until service time Friday at the funeral home.
