William “Jack” Moore

Jack passed away on August 16, 2016. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on October 5, 1931 to James Samuel and Martha Quinlin Moore. He was raised in Lawrence, Kansas. He spent two years in the United States Marine Corps in San Diego, California and then graduated in 1955 with a Degree in Business from the University of Kansas where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

He married Mary Jane Conklin Moore on April 7th, 1956. They have three children. Julie McDonald (Greg McDonald), Joanne Renfro and Tom Moore (Mike Horak) and six grandchildren, Michael, Marti and Kim McDonald and Adam, Emily and Kelly Renfro, a brother Sam of El Paso, and a plethora of granddogs that he adored. He owned and operated the General Appliance store at the corner of 11th and Massachusetts for many years. After retiring, he worked part-time at the Brandon Woods branch of Douglas County Bank.

Jack was quick with a smile and had wonderful sense of humor. He loved spending time with his family, and many friends. He loved playing and watching golf, reading, traveling, KU basketball, KC Chiefs football, vodka martinis with two olives, a twist of lemon and lots of ice and his favorite jacket, Greeny, that traveled the world with him.

He could be found at 9:00 weekday mornings enjoying coffee with his ‘coffee group’, most recently at McDonalds. He felt fortunate to have so many incredible friends.

A visitation will be held at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home on Friday, August 19th, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and the funeral service will be at the funeral home Saturday, August 20th at 11:00 a.m.

The family suggests memorials in his name to The Pathway Home, which provides veterans with support to enhance their lives following military service. Donald Douglas “Doug” Shade

Memorial services for Donald Douglas “Doug” Shade, 80, Lawrence, will be 2 pm, Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at West Campus of United Methodist Church at 867 Hwy 40.

Donald Douglas Shade passed away at Baldwin Health Care and Rehab Center on August 7, 2016.

He was born March 29,1936 to Donald and Audrey (Sparks) Shade in Ottawa, Kansas. He loved sport and played basketball, football and baseball for Ottawa High School. He married Ruby Sterlin of Scott City, Kansas, on August 24, 1958, and graduated from KU School of Business in1960. He was a member of Alpha Tou Omega and lifetime member of KU Alumni Association. They moved to Kansas City where Doug worked for City National Bank (now UMB) in the Trust Department, and later at General Motors in Leeds. In 1974 the couple moved to Lawrence where Doug worked for Burnett Instruments and the same time owned and operated both Baskin Robbins ice cream stores in Lawrence and Olathe and Bum Steer Barbeque in Lawrence.

Doug, Ruby and their three children lived near the Alvamar Country Club, and it was there he played the game he loved for over 40 years. Doug was honored to serve as Alavamar’s Country Club Kansas golf Association (KGA) Cup Tour captain in the 1990’s, leading the team to a win in 1995 and runners-up the following year. He was also a member of the KGA board and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

Doug retired in 2002. He played numerous rounds of golf at the Alvamar Country Club with the Noon Group. Doug attended West Campus of United Methodist Church these last few years.

He is survived by wife Ruby, children Mark (Annelie), Sitges, Spain, Susan Klopfenstein (Mark), Colorado Springs, CO, Steve (Christina), Parkville, MO, and seven grandchildren: Kai and Amber Shade, Kate and Caleb Klopfenstein, Adele, Audrey and Ian Shade. Also surviving Doug are his younger siblings Rodney Shade (Bonnie), nephews Alan, David (Mary), and Sandi Simmons, nephews Chad and Kirk Simmons.

Doug was a lifelong Jayhawk who was passionate about golf and KU basketball all his life. He was thrilled to see the Royals win the pennant last year. He was a kind and generous man who loved his family and was proud to see his children all graduate from KU. Doug was a well loved Papa who always had 31 flavors of ice cream for the grand kids.

William B. Pendleton

Graveside inurnment services with full military honors for William Biklen Pendleton will be at 3 pm Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, at Oak Hill Cemetery.

William Biklen Pendleton, of Lawrence, KS died May 15, 2015, at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living.

Born in Lawrence on October 12, 1920, William (usually known as Bill) was the first son and second child of William Henly Pendleton, Jr., and Marie Biklen Pendleton, both of Lawrence. Bill was predeceased by sister Barbara M. Gilfillan, brother Albert Biklen Pendleton, wife Edith Cottom Pendleton, and son Martin William Pendleton.

Bill is survived by his son Stephen H. Pendleton and companion Cathy Ricketts of Escondido, CA; daughter Helen E. “Hendle” Rumbaut and husband Michael Ambrose of Austin, TX; granddaughter Sasha M. Willingham, husband Jimmie Willingham, and great-grandson Charles A. Clark, all of Leander, TX; sister-in-law Lorita Pendleton, of Lawrence; nephews James B. Pendleton and wife Barbara, of Germantown, TN; John C. Pendleton and wife Karen, of Lawrence; A. Scott Pendleton and wife Cindy, of Orlando, FL; David Gilfillan and wife Sue, of Philadelphia, PA; and Bruce Gilfillan and wife Val, of New Port Richey, FL.

In 1958 he married Edith Cottom Livingston and adopted her two children, Stephen and Helen. He and Edith had a son, Martin William Pendleton, in 1959. Martin and his mother died in 1974 in an automobile collision.

Bill had deep historical ties to his native Lawrence. His great-grandfather, Theodore Poehler, was mayor in 1885. Theodore owned the Poehler Mercantile Company with warehouse and offices on East 8th Street (now the Poehler Loft Apartments); his name is still visible on the east side of the four-story brick building. Bill’s grandfather and father operated the Kaw Valley Cannery, located on East 10th Street, on premises currently owned by Allen Press. Bill worked summers in the cannery and learned many jobs, from gluing cardboard boxes to working in the cook room where steam was used for cooking, as well as in the operation of a hoist.

Bill attended Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence and graduated from Shattuck School in Faribault, MN in 1939. He enrolled at the University of Kansas that year and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

He served in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to March 1946. He saw service as a Lieutenant in the 593rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment (amphibious engineers), which operated LCM landing craft, in New Guinea and Borneo. His unit was attached to the Australian 6th Division for the invasion of Borneo.

After the war Bill resumed his studies at KU and graduated with an AB in economics in 1946. He then worked for three years in the accounting department of the Link Belt Company of San Francisco, CA. Returning to Lawrence in 1949, Bill farmed with his brother Albert until 1954, when he enrolled in the University of Kansas School of Law. He received his JD (LLB) in June 1957 and opened his law office on July 1, 1957, in the Jayhawker Theater Building (now Liberty Hall). In 1959 he moved to new quarters in the Lawrence National Bank building at 647 Massachusetts Street. Two more attorneys subsequently joined the firm, and the office was moved to 1031 Vermont Street in 2004. Bill retired from the practice of law in 2009. He continued to farm acreage south of the Wakarusa River until his death.

He served as judge of the Municipal Court of Lawrence from 1959 to 1967. At that time the bench was a part-time position, and he maintained his law practice while taking care of court matters. Bill was a member of the Douglas County Bar Association and served as its president in 1981.

Bill was a member of the KU Chancellors Club and of the Elizabeth M. Watkins Society and received the James Woods Green Medallion from the KU School of Law. He was formerly on the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church and served as its treasurer in the 1960s. He was a member of the Lawrence Breakfast Optimist Club for 58 years, receiving the Optimist of the Year award in 1992 and again in 1997.

Bill’s many interests included the collection of one-cylinder antique engines (“hit and miss”), which were used on farms and in oil fields and factories. He was a member of the Midland Railway Historical Association, which operates trains on the old right-of-way of the Santa Fe Railroad from Baldwin City to Ottawa Junction. He was involved with the acquisition of track equipment and served as a director on the Midland Railway Historical Foundation. He owned a Fairmont Inspection Car (section putt-putt), which he enjoyed taking out for rail excursions. He volunteered his time at various organizations, including the Heartland Medical Clinic at the Leo Center and Friends of Hidden Valley, and was a member of the American Legion. Bill held an Amateur Radio license (ham) and qualified for the “General” class license. He enjoyed traveling and rode steam trains around the world, including excursions in South Africa, Europe, and Cuba.

A memorial service, without the Order for the Burial of the Dead or Communion, will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church at a date and time to be announced. The body was donated for medical research.

Maurice Myers Dressler

DresslerA Celebration of Life for Maurice Myers Dressler, 93, Baldwin City, will be at 1 pm Wednesday at Worden United Methodist Church, with Pastor Changsu Kim, Roger Dressler, and J.D. Dressler officiating. Burial will be at approximately 3:30 pm at Highland Cemetery, Iola, Kan. A visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-7 pm at Worden United Methodist Church. Mr. Dressler passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehab.

He was born June 27, 1923, in Iola, the son of Perl Clyde and Myrtle Fern Myers Dressler. He graduated from Iola High School in 1942, and later served in the United States Army during World War II. He owned and operated H & D Motor Service for many years. He also worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant and a Ford dealership.

Maurice married Helen Louise Howard on Sept. 1, 1942, in Chanute. She preceded him in death on Dec. 15, 2014. Survivors include three sons, Maurice H. ‘Moe’ Dressler and wife Fran, Jacksonville, Fla. Roger Dressler and wife Norma, Baldwin City, and Truman Dale Dressler, Baldwin City; grandchildren Daryl (Mary) Dressler, Teri Dressler, and Tina (Frank) Selvera, Lori (Dennis) Lederer, J.D. (Stacey) Dressler, Rusty (Sharla) Dressler, and Kelly (Mike) Wintermantel; great grandchildren Zachary, Mallory, Emma, and Isabella Selvera, Chelsea Lederer, Whitney (Chris) Brubaker, Johnny Lederer, Macie, Miles, and Millie Dressler, Chase, Kalen, Kelby, and Kynlee Dressler; and Clayton, Carter, and Caden Wintermantel; and two great great granddaughters, Lane and Lacy.

George Burton Perdue

Perdue PicGeorge Burton Perdue died July 17, 2016 at Winchester Senior Care Center in Winchester, KS.

He was born Feb. 21, 1928 in Lawrence, KS. to George (Jack) & Naomi Perdue.

During the Korean War, he served his country by enlisting in the Navy and received an honorable discharge in 1955.

George, also known as Burton, spent many years working as a supervisor for FMC Corp. in Lawrence before retiring.

In the 1970’s, he and his wife Shirley moved from Lawrence to Perry, KS. They bought a beautiful 1880’s farmhouse with acreage and completely renovated it. It overlooked what was known locally as “Dead Man’s Curve” on Hwy. 24 north of Lawrence. Both loved having land for animals and enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside.

After retiring, he stayed active by starting Buck Creek Simmenthals to breed and raise Simmenthal cattle. He had an outstanding breeding record which was recognized by and received awards from the American Simmenthal Association.

Over the years they had also several dogs, rescued cats, chickens, and other farm animals as pets.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Perdue, who resides at Winchester Senior Care Center; a daughter and son, Sandra Sailer of Dallas, TX. and husband Bill; Jim Perdue of Oskaloosa, KS; a sister, Doris Bateson and husband Leroy of Lawrence, KS; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bruce Perdue.

A private interment will take place at a later date.

Amy Louise (Oswalt) Woodmancy

A. Woodmancy PicAmy Louise (Oswalt) Woodmancy, 91, died Thursday, July 14, 2016, at Bonner Springs Nursing Center in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Amy was born on July 26, 1924, near Elgin, Oklahoma to Nellie Lee (Cox) Oswalt and Gervis E. Oswalt. She is survived by her husband Glenn Covert Woodmancy . They celebrated their 70th anniversary on July 6. She was a much-loved mother and grandmother to daughters and their husbands, Mary-Nell (Mark) Gleeson and Sarah (Michael) Van Horn and grandchildren Ben (Kate) Gleeson, Sam (Megan) Gleeson, Nate (Liz Cooper) Van Horn and Elizabeth Van Horn.

Amy and Glenn’s married life took them all over the United States. They lived in Boulder, CO, Goltry, OK, Wichita, KS(twice), Huntsville, AL (twice), Seattle, WA (twice), Randolph, NY and Lawrence, KS upon retirement to be near family. Amy was a teacher wherever she lived, starting in a one-room schoolhouse in Oklahoma and completing her career teaching English as a Second Language to new immigrants at Jardine Jr. High in Wichita, Kansas.

A memorial service for Amy will be held Saturday, July 30, 2:30 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence.
