Christopher Scott “Chris” Holbach

Services for Christopher Scott “Chris” Holbach, 54, Baldwin City, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Vinland Cemetery.

Mr. Holbach died Saturday, October 22, 2016, at Shawnee Gardens in Shawnee, Kansas.

He was born October 25, 1961, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the son of Larry John and Judith Ann Walker Holbach. He graduated from Bishop Ryan High School in 1979 and attended school for 2 years to become a dairy herdsman.

Mr. Holbach worked for the Leroy Wasman dairy farm from 1981 to 1989 and the George dairy farm from 1990 to 2011 before retiring in 2013 due to health reasons. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and stamps, and was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his father, brothers, Randy, Mitchel of Minot, ND, and sister, Cindy of Longview, TX.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Judy.

Lora Lee Johnson

Funeral services for Lora Lee Johnson, 69, Eudora, will be 1 pm, Friday October 28, 2016, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

She died Friday, October 21, 2016, at the Medicalodges in Eudora.

Lora Lee was born March 18, 1947, in Lawrence the daughter of Elwood Arthur and Dorothy Rose Pugh Wiggins. She attended Lawrence High School.

She loved doing very large puzzles with her children, paint by number paintings, collecting Elvis memorabilia, and she also had a collection of clocks.

Lora Lee was a homemaker but did volunteer at Wakarusa Valley grade school lunch room for many years. The kids loved her and they called her Chaos. She did taxes for many friends and family each year. She worked part time as a bookkeeper for Hill Chiropractic.

She married Robert W. Johnson Sr. “Bob” on December 14, 1963 in Lawrence, he preceded her in death on January 21, 2004.

Survivors include four children, Danny Johnson, Kelly Johnson, Robbie Johnson, Katie Johnson, all of Lawrence; ten grandchildren; sisters Patty Wiggins, Lawrence, and Candy Norwood, Overbrook.
Lora Lee is preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters Judy and Jane Wiggins.

Friends may call from noon to 8 pm Thursday, October 27, 2016, at the funeral home. A visitation will take place from 6-7pm.

Phyllis Marie Reynolds

Funeral services for Phyllis Marie Reynolds, 84, rural Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with Terry Jacobsen officiating, Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Grove. Mrs. Reynolds died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Lawrence, the daughter of Orville C. and Leona K. Tuckel Flory. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School, where she was a marksman on the Rifle Club squad, and later attended business school. Phyllis worked in human relations at Farmland Industries for more than 30 years. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed extensive traveling both domestically and abroad, including all 50 states and Europe. She was a very generous person, and enjoyed opening her home and entertaining family and friends. She also enjoyed golf, tennis, cooking, collecting teddy bears, and playing bridge.

Phyllis married Donald R. Reynolds on Dec. 16, 1951, in Lawrence. He survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Janet Marie Price, Lawrence; a son, Michael Roy Reynolds and wife Barbara, Lawrence; a brother, Dale Flory and wife Claudia, Lawrence; grandchildren Jessica Marie Mooney (Wade), Penny Candrilli (Joe), and Heath Morris; and great grandchildren Caitlin Mooney and Kyla Candrilli. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church, or the VFW Post 852, Lawrence, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

Marilyn June Nieder

Memorial services for Marilyn June Nieder, 71, Baldwin City, will be held on Thursday, October 20th, at The Lodge in Baldwin City from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. She passed on October 15, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Marilyn was born August 6, 1945, the daughter of Cecil Puckett and Norma June Moore, in Lawrence, KS and graduated from Baldwin High School.

Marilyn loved to read in her garden every day; gardening and being outside was something she loved as well. She was very creative and loved doing crafts such as crocheting, cross-stitch, making blankets, and knitting; a lot of family members have something she has made. Another passion of Marilyn’s was making food: baking, cooking, canning, and anything else that involved food. She never wanted anyone to be hungry so she was always making food for everyone.

After returning to Kansas in 1999, she worked for Amarr Garage Doors but decided to finish out her working days preparing meals for the Baldwin Intermediate Center for the last 10 years.

She married James “Jim” Nieder in the Summer of 1971 at the Lutheran Church in Baldwin City, KS. She is survived by her husband, Jim; son, Jeff Johnson of Firestone, CO.; Son Jim and wife Terri Nieder of Woods Cross, UT.; Daughter Stephanie Nieder of Bountiful, UT.; Daughter Libby Nieder of Bountiful, UT.; Monte and wife Kristyn Nieder of Baldwin City, KS.; three grandkids: Savannah, Cody, and Cierra along with three great-grandkids: Dylan, Austin, and Maxine; sister Jan Harral, San Marcos, CA; brother Mike Puckett, AZ.

Professor George J. Worth

A celebration of life for Professor Emeritus George J. Worth will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2016, at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

Mr. Worth, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 7th, 2016, at Bridge Haven at Alvamar. He was born on June 11, 1929, in Vienna, Austria, the son of Adolph and Theresa Schmerzler Worth (Wirtschafter). As a child, he left Vienna with his family during the Nazi occupation, and emigrated first to London, and finally to Chicago. He attended public schools beginning as a fifth-grader at John Fiske School in 1940, and graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1946. Mr. Worth attended the University of Chicago from 1946 to 1951, receiving his B.A. in 1948 and his M.A. in 1951, then moved on to the University of Illinois at Urbana for doctoral study. Before receiving his Ph.D. from Illinois in 1954, he spent the 1953-54 academic year writing his dissertation while on a Fulbright scholarship at University College London.

In 1955, Mr. Worth began a forty-year teaching career at Kansas University as an instructor, and was promoted to full professor in 1965. He taught students at all levels, ranging from remedial composition to honors courses to graduate seminars, directed 22 Ph.D. dissertations, and 11 senior honors essays. He was beloved by his students, many of whom he maintained contact with long after they left KU, and was the recipient of several teaching awards, including the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1988, and the Chancellor’s Club Career Teaching Award in 1994. Mr. Worth served as chair for the Department of English from 1964 through 1979, chaired the Senate/Faculty Executive Committee from 1980-81, the Search Committee for the Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1975, and the Chancellor’s Task Force on Faculty Development in 1979. Nationally, he engaged in extensive consulting, as an evaluator of English departments, of candidates for promotion and tenure at other universities, and of manuscripts submitted for publication. Mr. Worth himself wrote six published books and co-edited three others, as well as numerous articles, essays, and reviews; he also delivered papers at regional, national, and international meetings.

Mr. Worth’s particular area of interest was Victorian literature, with a focus on the works of Charles Dickens. He served as President of the Dickens Society in 1984, and chaired the MLA English 10 Victorian Literature program committee in 1974.

Mr. Worth met his future bride, Carol L. Dinsdale, during their elementary school days in Chicago. They married on March 17, 1951, and Carol preceded him in death on July 19, 2013. Together, they greatly enjoyed European travels, theater, opera, classical music, fine dining, reading, Scrabble, KU basketball, Royals baseball, and especially their many friends and family. Mr. Worth was a remarkably caring and attentive caregiver as Carol struggled with Alzheimer’s for more than six years. He was a kind, good-humored, and gracious gentleman, and will truly be missed.

Survivors include his son, Paul, and granddaughter, Hayley, of Wichita, daughter Theresa “Terry” Wilkinson, granddaughters Lauren (Nick) Adams and Claire (Aaron Stehman) Wilkinson, Lawrence, Lisa (David Eagle) Wilkinson, London, England, and five great-grandchildren.

The family would especially like to thank the devoted Assisted Living caregivers and staff both at Brandon Woods and at Bridge Haven, as well as the Visiting Nurses Association hospice staff, all of whom do such important work each and every day. Donations in Mr. Worth’s name may be made to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association Hospice, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Lila Ann Winn

Lila Ann Winn, 69, of Lawrence, Kansas passed away on October 12, 2016. She was born April 28, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Elijah William Winn and Robbie Williams Winn. She lived in Austin, Texas for 30 years, where she first cared for infirmed brain trauma children, but primarily cared for the elderly as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Lila received a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Illinois University in 1970 in sociology and education, and was a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., Mu Chapter. Those who attended Northeastern with her will remember the courageous leadership she provided in efforts to persuade the university to offer courses and counseling services that served the interests and needs of African American students. Upon graduation, she taught elementary school children for several years. Later she returned to school to become a LVN. She embraced children and the elderly alike with her warm smile and caring attention.

Lila was a frequent visitor to Las Vegas, and also enjoyed playing Bingo. She likely won as much as she lost in Las Vegas, and was always certain that the next Bingo number called would be the one she needed to win! She enjoyed a wide variety of music, and enjoyed watching television shows ranging from house remodeling, to murder mysteries, to sports. Lila was a loyal Chicago Bears football fan.

She is survived by daughter Kimberly Winn of Austin, Texas, and son Bradley (Kelly Bryan) Winn of Buda, Texas. She will be missed by four grandchildren, Braydon, Brynne, and Grayson Winn, and Ava Bryan. Surviving siblings are Ronald Winn, Richard (Karell) Winn, James (Yvonne) Winn all of Atlanta, Georgia, and Sandra (Martina) Winn Tutwiler of Lawrence, Kansas. Lila is also survived by eleven nieces and nephews and their spouses/partners, many grand nieces and nephews, and three sisters-in-law. She was predeceased by mother, Robbie Winn, father, Elijah Winn, and brothers, Gordon Dennis and Norman Winn.

Lila was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She loved her family, and so much enjoyed family reunions because all those she loved were gathered together in one place. She was a gentle and forgiving soul whose presence will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held in Lawrence, Kansas on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Mark A. Chaney

Graveside services for Mark A. Chaney, 53, Lawrence, will be 3 p.m. Friday, October 14, at Underwood Cemetery. A Celebration of Mark’s Life will be held Friday at The Castle Tea Room from 7 pm to 10 pm. Mr. Chaney died Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at his home.

He was born November 23, 1962, in Lawrence, the son of Donald Lee Chaney and Sharon Lynn Rogers Chaney.  He was a graduate of Lawrence High School in 1981, where he was active in the vocal music program and played football.  Mark was a pitcher and first baseman on the Lawrence American Legion Baseball team. He went on to attend The University of Kansas studying business and vocal music.
 
Mr. Chaney became a Circulation Manager for several newspapers in the Midwest including the Lawrence Journal World. Later he became successful in insurance sales and a mortgage broker for several years.  His career expanded into radio as an advertising representative for 1320 KLWN, where he also covered Lawrence High Football on KLWN with Hank Booth. He continued his career in radio as an account manager for Sports Talk 810 WHB Radio Kansas City.  Mr. Chaney continued his love of baseball over the years as a coach and an umpire. He was a talented and active vocalist, singing the national anthem for Kansas University Athletics and the Kansas City Royals. He was active in the Baker University Community Choir.

Survivors include daughters, Emily Elliott of Lawrence and Sarah Chaney-Lundquist (Molly Lundquist-Chaney) of Iowa; brothers, Michael D. Chaney (Tonya) and Rodney J. Chaney, both of Lawrence; grandchildren, Madeline, Oliver, and Rory. He was preceded in death by his parents.

James Steven ‘Jim’ Jansen

James Steven ‘Jim’ Jansen, 69, rural McLouth, passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Jim was born Dec. 24, 1946, in Marshall, Minn., the son of Joseph and Helen Jansen. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Marshall in 1964, and later attended Southwest Minnesota State College. Jim served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and earned two purple hearts, a bronze star, and a silver star. He worked in the construction industry for many years, including at the University of Kansas.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Gwen of the home, his brother, Steven Jansen (Kathy), Lawrence; mother-in-law, Mavis Simon, sister-in-law, Peg Thom (Richard); brother-in-law, Ken Simon (Cindi); nephews Matthew, Kory, and Jordan Simon, Matthew Jansen, and Rick Thom; nieces Sarah Plinsky, Rachelle Rients, and Rebecca Meidl; several great nieces and nephews and many beloved friends, including Charles & Mary Mehl.

A private Celebration of Life will be at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Barbara Jean Sufian

Funeral services for Barbara Jean Sufian, 67, Lawrence, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Lawrence. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Sufian died Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Barb was born in Springfield, Mo. on Sept. 27, 1949, to Melburn N. and Eleanor Carnegie Washburn. As part of a military family, she traveled frequently and graduated from Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt, Germany in 1967. She earned a degree in education from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo.

As a young girl, she enjoyed helping with her father’s military parties and spent her life entertaining family and friends. People were her hobby. She loved to travel, to learn about other cultures and make friends across the globe.

She settled in Lawrence and helped raise many children – including her four grandchildren — in a home-based daycare. She helped abused children as a longtime social worker. Most recently she helped students with special needs as an attendant on First Student buses in Lawrence.

Her passions were cooking and celebrating life with family and friends in her home.
Survivors include husband, Abdella (Ochaala) Sufian Amin, they were married Feb. 17, 2005, in Lahor, Punjab, Pakistan; daughter, Pat (Webster) Ozaki; brothers, Lloyd Washburn and wife Nancy (Davis), of Kansas, City, Mo., and Robert Washburn; brother in law, Stan Feldman; step sister, Chong Yoon; grandchildren, Steven, Caitlyn, Daniel and Megan Ozaki; nephews, Eric, Robert, Yamin and Yaujan; nieces, Valerie and Vicky (husband Martin)

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sharon Ann Washburn Feldman; and son-in-law, David Ozaki.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday.
