Mary Frances Moncrief

Funeral services for Mary Frances Moncrief, 84, formerly of Eudora, will be at 2 pm Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mt. Sidney Cemetery, Linwood. A visitation will be held from 1 pm until service time Wednesday.

Mrs. Moncrief died Thursday, Mar. 5, 2015, at Prairie Grove Health & Rehab in Prairie Grove, Ark.

She was born Feb. 5, 1931, in Dallas, the daughter of William Waverly and Carrie Ethel Johnson Stuart. She attended schools in Dallas. Mary was a homemaker, and was kept busy raising her seven children.

She married Delbert H. Moncrief on May 28, 1949, in Weatherford, Tex. He preceded her in death in 2002. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Moncrief.

Survivors include three sons, Waverly Moncrief and wife Donna, Eudora, Howard Moncrief and wife JoAnn, Garfield, Ark., and Joseph Moncrief and wife Renee, Harveyville, Kan.; three daughters, Alta Carte and husband Bruce, Cane Hill, Ark., Carolyn Joyce and husband Perry, San Antonio, Tex., and LaVone Devers and husband Wade, Wichita, Kan.; 13 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and step great grandchildren.

Ruth Genevieve Beck

Ruth Genevieve Beck, beloved wife of Colonel Donald Macaulay Beck joined her creator February 20, 2015. She died peacefully a month short of her 99th birthday.

Ruth Genevieve Beck was born March 23, 1916 in Montgomery County, Iowa. She was the second youngest of 7 children of John (Johan) Albin Gustavsson Maxell and Anna Wilhelmina Hult Maxell.

She attended the rural Pilot Grove country one room school, Elliott High School and graduated from Red Oak High School in the class of 1933 at the age of 16.

She attended Red Oak Jr. College for one year, the minimum requirement to teach at that time. She taught grades 1-6 for a total of 5 years. The saved income provided enough money to enroll in a second year of college.

In the fall of 1939 Ruth attended Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska. That fall she met her future husband and love of her life Don on a blind date and before the year was out, they were engaged. She continued to teach two more years in Moville, Iowa while Don received his Bachelors of Science degree from the University of South Dakota and entered US Marine Corps Reserve Officers Candidate School in Quantico, VA where he was commissioned Second Lieutenant.

Ruth and Don were married in Mount Olivet Lutheran Church on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1941 in Washington, D.C.

Both shared common roots of strong family, mid America upbringing, lean years and struggles during the great depression and the robust energy that their large families provided.

Ruth was strong in her Christian faith and lived by her values and high principles. As the wife a Marine officer, she nurtured the family and maintained the security and comfort of the home. Her strong values influenced all those around her. She was proud of her husband, her parents, her siblings, her children and her Swedish roots.

Ruth made many friends throughout the family’s military postings in China, California, Indiana, Virginia, Iowa, Hawaii, and Texas. Many times, past friendships were renewed in different locations. She enjoyed the stimulating experience of travel and discovering new places, always maintaining a warm secure home wherever they went.

Attending to basic human needs and suffering of people was a perpetual interest and concern to her. She approached life with optimism and determination. She was forever the teacher helping all of her children with their reading, spelling lists and math. She enjoyed stimulating conversation and discussion of world issues, political editorials and current events. People found her interesting, versatile and caring.

She volunteered her time with low income families to help with planning and budgeting. She enjoyed bridge, ceramics, and later volunteered at her church and delivered Meals on Wheels into her early 80’s. She loved working crossword puzzles.

After the death of her husband in 1993 she made the decision to move from Texas to Lawrence, Kansas October of 2000 to be close to two of her four children.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters Effie Mewhirter, Minnie Maxell, Helen Thomason, brothers Clarence Maxell, Marion Maxell, John Maxell, nephew Thomas Mewhirter and granddaughter Leslie Caroline Beck.

She is survived by her four children Barry (Mary) Beck Midland, TX; Jane (Bo) Harris Lawrence, KS; Mark (Marta) Beck Lansing, KS; Linda (Lon) Paglio Moreland Hills, OH; Grandchildren Keith Beck, Alexis Beck, Toland Hippe, Jessica Harris-Wolking, Hunter Harris, Matthew Beck, Adriane Beck Nada, Vincent Paglio, Daniel Paglio, Stephen Paglio and two sister-in-laws Iona Maxell and Shirley Beck along with eleven great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. She will forever be remembered in the hearts of her loved ones as a loving wife and wonderful mother.

A service is planned for July 31st 11:00 at the First United Methodist Church in Gregory, SD and burial is in the IOOF Cemetery following the service.

Randall Louis Jones

Randy passed away Thursday February 26, 2015 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence Kansas surrounded by his loving family.

Randy was born June 10, 1957 in Kansas City, MO. Son of Robert Lee Jones and Lenora V. Holtom. They preceded him in death as well as his step father Richard C. Holtom.

Randy grew up in Baldwin City, KS and then moved to California where he met his wife Diane. Randy was self-employed for thirty years in the interior window covering industry. He started his business in the 1980 then moved back home to Baldwin City, Kansas in 1992.

Randy was a hard worker and loving father and husband. He loved to be around the water either skiing or playing with his sons. He was always working with his hands and teaching his boys everything he knew. Pool was one of his favorite hobbies. Randy always lived life to the fullest and loved to talk to everyone. Most everyone knew him as “the Shutter Man”. Randy beat throat cancer in 2008 and never let life slow him down.

Survivors include his three sons Justin Michael Jones, Evan Riley Jones, and Taylor Lee Jones all of Baldwin City, Kansas; two brothers Robert Leo Jones of Glendale, Wisconsin and Rodney Lee Jones of San Diego, CA.

Memorial Mass will be held at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Baldwin City, KS on Monday, March 2, 2015 at 10am with Father Farrar presiding. Inurnment will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin City.

Denni Diane Wade Hughes

Memorial services for Denni Diane Wade Hughes, 83, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana St. Lawrence, KS 66044.

Mrs. Hughes died surrounded by her three loving children, Thursday, February 26, 2015, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 6, 1931, in Mission, Kansas, the daughter of Foy Davis “Jack” Wade and Viola Mae Deniston Wade. She graduated from Shawnee Mission High School and graduated from the University of Kansas as a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1953, majoring in Spanish and the Fine Arts. She played the marimba and was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church. Her favorite things to do included talking to people, mostly about her children’s activities, caring for her animals, and enjoying KU athletics. She was also an avid reader and Bridge player.
She married Robert Walter Hughes, M.D., August 8, 1953. He preceded her in death in 2002. Mrs. Hughes was also preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother-in-law Howard L. Green.

Survivors include a son, Patrick L. Hughes, M.D. of Overland Park; two daughters, Janice L. Hughes and Sharon M. Hughes both of Lawrence; sister, Patricia Wade Green of Dufur, OR; two granddaughters, Megan Elizabeth Palmer and husband Dustin of Overland Park, and Kelly Michelle Hughes of Rowland Park; cousin, Carol Sue Keffer of Louisburg; two nephews and one niece.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Friday prior to the service.

Bonnie Jean Lawyer

Services for Bonnie Jean Lawyer, 84, Topeka, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence, Kansas. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Lawyer died Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Aldersgate Village in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born May 24, 1930, in Concordia, Kansas, the daughter of Jake and Thelma Moore Vanek. She graduated from Concordia High School.

Mrs. Lawyer was a homemaker. She enjoyed knitting, crafting, sewing, and country music. She adored animals and was famous for her homemade baked beans.

She married John D. Lawyer in November of 1949. He preceded her in death in 2007.

Survivors include a son John Dewayne Lawyer, Jr. and wife Irene of Topeka; two daughters, Vicky Viner and husband Phillip of Shawnee, and Christy Osborn of Missouri; a sister, Willa Dean Hebert of Concordia; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

Colin Trey Bennett

A memorial service for Colin Trey Bennett, 21, Tonganoxie, will be 5 pm Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the Christian Church in Tonganoxie, KS.

He died Feb. 19, 2015, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Colin was born Dec. 26, 1993, in Overland Park, KS, the son of Doug and Tammy Nokes Bennett. He graduated from Tonganoxie High School in May of 2012.

Mr. Bennett was currently employed at KC Installers, where he loved giving everyone he worked with a hard time. He had also worked within the Tonganoxie community, where he enjoyed helping others. There were many outside activities he enjoyed, including fishing, four wheeling and just about anything that kept him outside. Colin loved to spend time with his family and friends, and always had to be doing something. We will always remember his infectious smile and his loving and caring personality.

Colin is survived by his parents, Doug and Tammy; a brother Ryan (Tia and niece Sage); two sisters Colby (Jeremy) and Marisa; his Geemaw Mahlene Nokes; many aunts, uncles, cousins and other family.

He is preceded in death by his grandpa, Orval Nokes, whom he missed dearly, grandma Jan Bennett and grandpa Pete Bennett.

Family will receive guests at the Christian Church in Tonganoxie from 3 pm until service time Saturday.

Barbara Ruth (Miller) Topping

Barbara Ruth (Miller) Topping, age 86, passed away peacefully in her home in Bloomington, Minn., surrounded by her loving family on February 11, 2015. She was born October 19, 1928 in Chanute, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harold “Cappy” Miller and Ruth Filson Miller and her two brothers Ralph H. Miller of Corvallis, Ore., and Richard F. Miller of Wichita, Kan.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, James, her sister Beverly Olson of Humboldt, Kan., daughter Ann Topping of Bloomington, daughter Melinda “Lin” Topping (Keith Lowinske) of Apple Valley, daughter Kathleen (Dan) Ryan of Savage and daughter Darcy (David) Neal of Bloomington; in addition to 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Private inurnment will take place at a later date.

Nancy Payne

Funeral services for Nancy O. Payne, 74, Lawrence, will be at 7 pm Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be at 1 pm Friday at Oakwood Cemetery, Milan, Mo. Nancy passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at her home.

She was born Dec. 6, 1940, in Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of George and Gladys Sinkey Bell. She moved to Lawrence in 1961. Nancy worked at Hallmark Cards for many years in several different departments, and later at Anthony Chiropractic as an accountant. She spent the last 20+ years working at Midwest Property Management as an accountant. She was a Charter Member of the Red Hat Ladies of Kansas City, and enjoyed bowling for many years with her sisters and close friends, and was a lifetime member and served as secretary of the Lawrence Women’s Bowling Association. Nancy was an avid gardener, loved to travel, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She married John R. Payne on Sept. 8, 1960, in Sigourney, Iowa. He survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Julie Katzfey, Lake Waukomis, Mo.; granddaughter Kendall Overman and husband Trent and their children Easton, Caroline, and Hudson, Olathe; grandchildren Jordan, Brian, & Auston Katzfey, Eudora; four brothers, John Bell and wife Hazel, Marion, Ohio, Russell Bell and wife Mary, Canyon City, Calif., Lonnie Bell and wife Pauline, Sigourney, Iowa, and George Bell and wife Terri, St. Paul, Minn,; three sisters, Merry Avery and Jeannie Porter, both of Lawrence, and Penny Melzarek, Eagan, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Nannette Payne.

Deriece Ann Darnell-Drake

Services for Deriece Ann Darnell-Drake, 66, Lawrence, will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Deriece died Tuesday February 17th, 2015 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born on March 8th, 1948 in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Claude Jack and Jenice Darnell. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Addiction Studies from Park University in 1994. She was near completion of her Masters Degree in Counseling when she became ill in 2014.

Deriece worked as a Key Punch Operator for Bell Electronics then later as a Direct Service Worker and Counselor and owned a substance testing facility in Gunnison Colorado with her husband Richard Drake.

She married Richard Drake on September 5, 1996 in Lawrence, Kansas. Other survivors include two sons Kyle Numbers, Las Vegas, Nevada and Lance Williams, Ozawkie, Kansas, two daughters, Sonya Robinson, Lawrence, Kansas and Carrie Williams-Kreckman, Altengan, Germany. She has a sister and brother in law Jeanie and Pat Peterson of Lake Tahoe, California, a step-daughter and son in law Jane and Chris Boyer of Covington, Louisiana and four grandchildren, Kelsey and Kayla Ledbetter, Mikayla Boyer, Cody Williams, and Taylor Williams.

The family suggests donations in lieu of flowers to Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home to help pay for expenses.
