Virginia Carter Weldon

Virginia Carter Weldon, 67, died early Saturday morning, April 15, 2017 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Virginia was a distinguished member of the first student body to attend Nova High School in Davie, FL, which was then known as the Nova Educational Experiment, a joint project between the Broward County Public Schools and the Ford Foundation. Students were required to pass an entrance exam for acceptance and the school year consisted of eleven months of instruction, with a one-month summer break.

Working briefly as a dental hygienist’s assistant, Virginia split her time in the early ‘70s between Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Walker’s Cay, Bahamas. There, Virginia met and fell in love with her second husband, Truston Adrian Jacobs. They spent their early years raising their boys in Monroe and Shreveport, LA. In the ‘90s the Jacobs family moved to Salina, KS. Eventually all three boys settled in Lawrence, KS and in 2006 Virginia joined them.

Virginia will be remembered for her intelligence, her love of cats, and for being a sweetheart.  She was defined by her generosity and her resiliency. She was unconditionally gentle, kind, and good. The motto of her alma mater, Nova High School, was “We do the right thing.” That sentiment describes Virginia perfectly. She always tried her best to do the right thing.

Virginia was a woman of strong faith. She enjoyed daily devotionals and took comfort in reading the bible.

Virginia was preceded in death by her younger sister, Peggy Weldon, who died in 1974, her mother Blanche Virginia Shaw Weldon in 1999, her first husband Ed Haxby in 1999, and her father John Carter Weldon in 2002.

She is survived by her three sons, Truston Adrian Jacobs (TAJ), John Kevin Jacobs, Matthew Raymond Jacobs of Lawrence, two grandchildren, Isaac F. Jacobs and Jack G. Jacobs, honorary grandchildren Tristen Chenoweth and Brie Ann Tate, honorary immediate family Kim Matchette, Mindy Tate, Maggie Bornholdt, Tammy Bonham and Addie Dahl, and also her second husband Truston Adrian Jacobs, and her Aunt Anna Jean Shaw of Henderson, KY as well as her cousins and other family who reside in or near Henderson, KY. Virginia is also survived by her closest non-human companion, her beloved cat Baby.

Services in Lawrence will be held on Saturday, April 29 at 11:00 AM at Christ Community Church 1100 Kasold Drive, Lawrence KS with Pastor Dr. Jeffry L. Barclay officiating. An additional service will be held later this year in Henderson, KY to lay Virginia to rest in her family plot at Fairmont Cemetery.
