Shonee Metcalf passed from this life on November 20th, 2016 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

An eternal mind-over-matter optimist. She loved her husband Ken unreservedly for 56 years and found great joy and pride in her children Kim and Shonee, grandchildren Graham and Grace and son in laws Leif and Greg.

A city girl, she embraced the dream of farm life and learned to drive big tractors, chase wayward cattle and taught her daughters they could do anything they set their minds to. She powered through several medical conditions to live a life filled with gentility, positivity and an indomitable spirit. It’s hard to let you go Mom. But we know that your work here is done and you are ready for your next assignment in a place where there are no more tears and no more pain.

Friends and Family please join us December 3rd between 1:00 and 4:00 to an Open House celebrating her life at the family home 1799 E 1675 Road, Lawrence Ks.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Center.

Herbert Lester Poulsen Jr.

Herbert Lester Poulsen, age 86, died on November 20, 2016, in Lawrence, KS.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 10am with memorial service & Military Honors immediately following at 11am at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Herb is survived by his wife Janet Poulsen, of Lawrence, KS, his sons, Keith Poulsen (Christy), Eric Poulsen, of Lawrence, KS; his daughters, Pam Kincaid (Steve) of Lawrence, Cindy Merkel (Pete) of Mooresville, NC and his grandchildren, Kevin Calton, Courtney Hill (Ethan), Alexandra Kincaid, Kara Poulsen, Katrina Poulsen, Brad Kincaid, Kyndall Merkel and Grant Merkel.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Lester and Margaret Michels Poulsen of Northbrook, IL; his sisters, Margaret Miller, of Barrington, IL, Dorothy Johnson, of Pullman, MI and Donna Christensen, of Pullman, MI.

Herb was born on August 16, 1930 in Chicago, IL. He served in the Navy on a minesweeper during the Korean War and maintained friendships with his fellow service men up until his death. He attended Valparaiso University in Indiana with a focus on mechanical engineering. Herb worked for Aeroquip/Eaton, for over 30 years as a quality control manager and plant manager.

He was a great family man and a loving father. He married Janet Ethel Drum, August 20, 1960, after meeting her on a blind date in college.

Herb was a social, active man who was deeply involved in many volunteer organizations including Kiwanis, where he was instrumental in building over twenty-five wheel chair ramps and many houses for Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, canoeing in the BWCA, traveling and spending time with friends and family.

William R. Arnold

Services for William R. (Bill) Arnold will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, at the First Baptist Church of Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dr. Arnold died Thursday, November 17, 2016, following complications after surgery.

He was born May 4, 1933, in Salina, KS, the son of Clay and Ruby Arnold. Graduating from Salina High School in 1951, he attended the University of Kansas on a Summerfield Scholarship, receiving his B.A. in Sociology in 1955. A major highlight as an undergraduate was winning the National Debate Championship in 1954 as a member of the KU Debate squad. Awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he received his M.A. from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 1956. Holding a Danforth Fellowship, he earned a Ph.D. in Sociology with a concentration in Crime and Delinquency in 1963.

He taught Sociology at Hanover College in Indiana from 1960-1963 and the University of Texas at Austin from 1963-68 before beginning his long career at the University of Kansas, which spanned the years from 1968-2004. His KU classes, apart from a large introductory course, emphasized crime and delinquency studies. In 1999 he received the Steeples Faculty Award for Outstanding Service to the People of Kansas. He was the author of four books and numerous articles in the field of Criminal Justice.

Outside the classroom he devoted many hours to social and religious causes. A former Eagle Scout, he worked with young scouts at several levels. He also valued his participation in the First Baptist Church of Lawrence, especially the Missions Ministry. In local and state communities he was active in causes advocating reform, especially in the area of criminal justice. He lobbied for legislative action related to the justice system and authored studies on minority confinement and sentencing guidelines. He also chaired the Emergency Service Council, now administered by Ballard Center, and served on the board of the Lawrence League of Women Voters.

In 1955 he married Margaret Jean Smith, with whom he shared academic life and post-retirement travels. She survives him. Other survivors include three children: Janice, Bruce, and Mark Arnold as well as eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the Deacon’s Fund of the First Baptist Church, the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, or the Children’s Defense Fund.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, November 22, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Delbert E. Pringle

A memorial visitation for Delbert E. Pringle, 80, Lawrence, will be Sunday from 6-8 pm at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory. Inurnment will be Monday at 11 am at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Pringle died Friday, November 18, 2016, at his home.

He was born July 10, 1936, in Lawrence, the son of Lawren D. and Roberta G. Copp Pringle. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School, and later served in the United States Marine Corps. Delbert worked for many years as a machinist and a tool and die maker. After retirement, he drove a school bus for the Baldwin School District. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, and enjoyed fishing, golf, mushroom hunting, and watching sports.

He married Juanita Faye ‘Nita’ Beerbower on May 17, 1958, in Lawrence. She preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Michael. Survivors include three sons, Randy Pringle and wife Cathy Brown, Lawrence, Timothy Pringle, Dallas, and Gregory Pringle, Lawrence; two brothers, Robert Pringle and wife Gloria, Baldwin City, and Lawren Pringle and wife Carol, Lawrence; ten grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

Flora Jeannette Ott

Funeral service for Flora Jeannette Ott, 96, Lawrence, will be 10 am. Tuesday at Rumsey­Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Reverend Dr. Peter Luckey will officiate. She died Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at Pioneer Ridge. She was born May 9, 1920, in Lamar, CO., the daughter of Robert Lee and Eva Martha Flory Markley.

She was a member of Central United Methodist Church. She and her husband enjoyed square dancing for years with her sister Vivian and her husband Frank. She enjoyed quilting and taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mrs. Ott worked for Allen Press as a proof reader for 17 years retiring in 1987.

She married Emerson John Ott on Aug. 31, 1949. He preceded her in death on May 15, 2003. She was also preceded in death by a son Kerry Allen Ott and his wife Kathy, siblings Lila McMillen, Vivian Johnson, Yvonne Markley and Sonny Markley. She is survived by her daughter Debi Waggoner and her husband Rod of Lawrence, grandchildren Sherry Thomas (Bryan), Ryan Waggoner (Lauren Cunningham), great­ grandchildren Kerry, Patricia, and Shanley Thomas all of Lawrence.

Friends may call Monday from 9am to 8pm at the Rumsey-­Yost Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm.

Errol Joe Kampschroeder

Funeral services with Military Honors for Errol Kampschroeder, 78, Lecompton, will be at 2 P.M., Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. A visitation will follow the service ending at 5 P.M.

Errol Joe Kampschroeder was born December 9, 1937, in Topeka, KS. He was the son of Robert Frederick and Wanita Caroline Kampschroeder (Nemec). He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1955.

He proudly served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959. He served in France as a mechanic in an Army boat maintenance unit.

Errol married his best friend and the love of his life, Nancy Joy Clifton on July 25, 1959 in Lawrence, KS. She survives of the home, along with their beloved dog Marty and “Shop Cat.” Errol cherished the love of many furry friends throughout the years. His pets were always by his side at home and work.

Errol was a first-generation business owner, founding Kampschroeder Machine & Repair in 1962. His expertise in machine, welding, & lathe work truly were unsurpassed in quality. Throughout his career many businesses came to rely on his mechanical genius, craftsmanship, work ethic and problem-solving skills.

In 1986, Errol and Nancy founded Midwest Raceway, home of the 1/8th mile drag, in Manhattan, KS. The drag strip is a labor of love that requires a lot of physical endurance and time from Errol and Nancy. Errol and Nancy willingly gave of themselves because of their love and passion for racing. Their friendships and love of the racers, their families, and racing community has always been their motivation.

Errol unexpectedly died Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Errol died as he lived, working hard on the job. All who know Errol realize that Errol’s death is a reflection of his relentless work ethic.

Surviving family throughout the United States includes Sons: Gregg and wife Julie, Rick and wife Vickie; Grandchildren and their families: Kami, Zack, Kasi, Kurt, Jared, Jada, Kiersten, and Laness;
Great-Grandchildren: Aiyana, Kaisen, Aavya, and Kalaya.

Errol is preceded in death by his Parents, Robert and Wanita Kampshcroeder; In-laws Ernest and Thelma Clifton; Granddaughter Katerina Kampschroeder.

The family would like to recognize all of Errol and Nancy’s friends and extended family. A special recognition to Jerry and Dana Taliaferro, Errol and Nancy’s “adopted children”; Dave and Lori Shuck, the Butler Family, Errol and Nancy’s “racing family.” There are many other friends, too many to list, that are also considered family.

Friends may call from Noon to 8 P.M. on Saturday. A visitation will take place from 3 – 5 P.M.

Betty M. Stellwagen

No public services are planned for Betty M. Stellwagen, 87, Perry, who passed away Wed., Nov. 16, 2016, at her home.

She was born to Gladys and Arthur L. Tarpy on Oct. 10, 1929, in Logansport, Ind. She married Lawrence E. ‘Larry’ Stellwagen Jr. on Oct. 18, 1950, and they had three children.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence, of the home; a son, Larry III of Oswego, Kan.; a sister, Carol Cheek and husband Mike, rural Lawrence; a sister-in-law, Shirley Tarpy; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Debi Lynch, a son, Steve Stellwagen, a brother, Sonny Tarpy, and two sisters, Mary Kreeger and Lorene Mitchell.

Pamela Ann (Bosze) Herzog

Funeral services for Pamela Ann Herzog, 66, Lawrence, will be at 1 pm Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pamela passed away November 14, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born January 13, 1950, in Lawrence, the daughter of William J. and Nancy E. (Ray) Bosze. After the death of Nancy, Pamela’s father married Betty J. Spaulding in 1961.

Pamela graduated from Lawrence High School in 1968. She married Charles W. Oakes, they divorced in 1979. She worked at the University of Kansas Printing services for 20 years.

Pamela enjoyed playing canasta, bingo and scrabble with her friends at Babcock, singing karaoke, watching KU basketball, visiting with friends and neighbors, and spending time with family.

Survivors include three daughters, Sheila Herzog of Kansas City, KS; Shelly Rodriguez and husband, Sam, of Lawrence; Lisa Burton and husband Lawrence Jr., of Lawrence; one step daughter, Robyn Herzog of Lawrence; two sisters, Connie Spitz of Lawrence; and Joan Gish and husband Bob of Eureka, CA; a brother, Jim Rainwater of Collinsville, OK; a step sister, Jane Landmark and husband Victor Heffner of Lawrence; a step brother, Jerry Avey and wife Donna of Longmont, CO; 12 grandchildren and one great grandson, along with aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pamela was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy, who lost her battle to cancer in 1961. Her father, William in 2010, and her step mother Betty, in 2015. She was also preceded in death by her brother in law, Owen Spitz, and sister in law, Barbara Rainwater.

The family will greet friends Thursday, November 17th, at the funeral home from 6 – 7:30 pm.

Friends and family ask that you remember Pamela as a strong woman and a fighter and suggest memorials to the American Cancer Society, Douglas County Visiting Nurses or Willow Domestic Violence Center, sent in care of the funeral home.
