Loman Hoover Lathrom

Funeral services, with military honors for Loman Hoover Lathrom, 86, Lawrence, will be 11 am, Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Wild Horse Cemetery, Jefferson County.

Loman died Wednesday, at Midland Care Hospice House, Topeka.

He was born May 17, 1929, in Rayborn, MO, the son of Ulysses S. Grant and Josie Wilhite Lathrom. He served in the United States Navy in 1949. Loman was a Carpenter for many years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his family. Many hours were spent around a campfire.

Loman married Estalene Lela Perkins in Salinas, CA, on October 24, 1950, she survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Brenda and husband Don Curtiss, Chubbuck, ID, Linda and Wayne Zook, Lawrence, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and two sons Gary Loman Lathrom and Robert Lee Lathrom.

Susan M. Givens

Susan Mary Gillett Givens, 72, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on June 3, 2015. She was born on May 13, 1943 in Racine, WI, to Mary and Lyman Gillett, the oldest of three daughters. She graduated from Washington Park High School in 1961, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1965. While in Madison, Sue met her soulmate, Richard Spencer Givens, and they married on June 25, 1966. Sue and Rich moved to Ames, IA where their first daughter, Barbara was born. In 1967, Rich accepted a faculty position in the Chemistry Department at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS and there they established their roots, welcoming three more daughters. Sue was employed by Lawrence Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse in the Obstetrics/Gynecology unit from 1970 until her retirement in 2005.

During her nursing career, Sue served on numerous committees at LMH and the Kansas State Nurses Association, working to address healthcare needs that she and others had identified, including the founding of the Infant-Loss Support Group at LMH. She was very active in the First Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder, a Deacon and a Parish Nurse. Sue was also a regular volunteer at FPC, as well as at Ten Thousand Villages, Just Food and Health Care Access, and other community organizations. She was a tireless advocate for those in need, working with others to lessen the world’s injustices.

Sue was a devoted wife, mother and friend, serving others in quiet, unassuming ways. She is remembered for her welcoming home, wonderful family meals, an encouraging note attached to a jar of her Jayhawk Jam, care packages containing “treasures” from the Church rummage sale, or a celebratory candle on your supper plate for a job well done. She cherished her opportunities to develop new and lasting friendships with women in the University Women’s Club, Eve Circle, the Jabberwalkers, her sewing group and book clubs. Sue especially loved holidays, every celebration rich with tradition that her family will continue in her honor. University students, staff, and faculty in the Chemistry Department at KU were always made welcome guests to the Givens’ home on holidays and for other celebrations. Sue loved to travel and accompanied Rich on many adventures around the world in addition to her frequent visits to children and grandchildren in other states.

Sue was the beloved wife of Richard, married 49 years, a loving mother of 4 daughters: Barbara J. Heeb (Jon), Elizabeth I. Porter (Jack), Madison, WI, Marjory L. Givens (Trey Sato), Madison WI and Mary E. Givens, Lawrence KS. She was also a proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Rachel and Harrison Heeb, Cameron and Clare Porter, and Jane and Jeffrey Sato Givens. Sue is survived by her sisters, Martha Spacek, Topeka, KS and Nancy Reeser (Dennis), Racine, WI, and by many nieces and nephews.

Sue’s ashes will be laid to rest at Pioneer Cemetery and along the lakeshore of their Sunset View cabin in the North woods of Wisconsin, her favorite place on earth. A Memorial Celebration of Sue’s life is planned for Saturday, June 20th at 3pm at the First Presbyterian Church.

The family would like to thank Dr. Stein and his staff at LMH Oncology and Andy Lewis and staff at VNA hospice for their exceptional care of Sue.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Sue’s name to First Presbyterian Church funds designated for the Parish Nurses, the Presbyterian Women, the Eco Team or to Health Care Access, Just Food or to a charity of your choice. And please enjoy a scoop of Iwig’s ice cream in her honor.

Stacy Lyn Naff

Funeral services for Stacy Lyn Naff, 56, Baldwin city, will be 11 am Friday, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Eudora City Cemetery.

Mr. Naff died Tuesday at Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

He was born August 4, 1958, in Lawrence, the son of Robert E. Naff and Carol Ann (Rieder) Kindred.

Mr. Naff served in the United States Army. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his parents, Carol Kindred of Baldwin City and Robert Naff of Eudora; three sisters, Brenda Climer and husband Carl of Baldwin City, Laurie Elliott of Lawrence, Christine Davenport of Lawrence; and one brother, Robert D. Naff of Baldwin City.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A visitation with the family will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday.

Oliver Hershel (Ollie) Helm

Funeral services for Oliver H. (Ollie) Helm, 82, Lawrence, will be 11 am, Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Reno Cemetery.

He died Sunday, May 31st at his home, surrounded by his family.

Oliver was born April 6, 1933, in Stanley, OK, the son of James and Winnie Mae Dees Helm. He moved to Kansas in 1952. Oliver enjoyed gardening and hunting. He worked construction as a framer for many years. He was a long time member of the Lawrence Christian Center. Oliver loved his church and beloved Pastor Dan Nicholson.

Oliver married Geneva Payne, May 5, 1951, she passed away in 2002. He later married Eviline Tschtiner in June of 2005, she survives of the home.

Other survivors include four sons, Bobby and Rhonda Helm, Jimmy Helm, Glen and Carla Helm, Roger and Lucinda Helm; six daughters, Mary and Skip Montgomery, Judy and Marty Sheley, Rita and Alan Calef, Tammy Helm, Freida and Gary Houk, Lynn Helm; four stepsons, Charles Wray, Raymond Wray, Michael and Eunice Wray, Ricky Wray; two step daughters, Sabrina Wray and Bettie Wray; 67 grandchildren, 102 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren; two brothers Lee and Lois Helm, Monroe and Ann Helm; three sisters Laverne Redford, Sue and Jim McDaniel, Brenda and Phil Kuhnert; and Tom McKay who was like a son to him.

He is preceded her in death by his wife Geneva, a daughter Tina, two brothers David and John Helm, parents, three grandchildren, Justin Helm, Amanda Clemons and Brody Parsons.

Delores Ellen Shelley

Services for Delores Ellen Shelley, 79, Lawrence, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sutton Cemetery.

Mrs. Shelley died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Medicalodges Eudora.

She was born January 16, 1936, in Sugar Creek, Colorado, the daughter of Esther Adams Kirk and step father, Albert Pippert.

Mrs. Shelley was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and researching genealogy. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lawrence and volunteered at Meals on Wheels.

She married Robert C.A. Shelley, October 6, 1954 in Lawrence on the Shelley family farm. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Ed Shelley and wife Dee Dee of Topeka; daughter, Jessica E. Hibbs-Shelley of Pleasant Hill, MO; brother, Carl Kirk of Lee’s Summit, MO; 2 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Deborah D. Shelley-Hibbs and a son Rob E. Shelley, preceded her in death.

Wanda R. Mull

Wanda R. Mull passed away on May 24, 2015, at Olathe Hospice House. Visitation will be at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home on Sunday, May 31 from 2 to 4 pm. The Celebration of Life will be at this same facility on Monday, June 1 at 2 pm, followed by inurnment at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.

Wanda was born in Hutchinson KS on February 22, 1925, to Willard and Orpha Sweet. She met A. R. (Bob) Mull in Lawrence. They were married on September 15, 1944, spending 67 years together prior to his death in 2011.

Survivors include her children: Roy Mull, Roxie Lyle, Heather and husband Ray Zwiener, Chris and wife Chrisy Mull, and Dave and wife Jenny Cedillo. She was Gramma to eleven, Great Gramma to 21 and Great Great Gramma to four. In addition, she leaves behind many beloved friends.

Wanda gravitated around family and friends, socializing and laughing, praying with and encouraging all. She loved playing the piano and singing. Always smiling and cheerful, in spite of any situation, she had a profound impact on all who knew her. She has been and will continue to be a strong influence of love, courage, and inspiration.

Mary Nadine Hadl

Graveside services for Mary (Nadine) Hadl, 89, Lawrence will be 2 pm Friday, May 29, 2015, at Memorial Park Cemetery.

She died May 24, 2015, at her home.

Nadine was born January 8, 1926, in Seneca, MO, the daughter of Fred and Celeste Nutting Farrier. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School.

She married Otis “Tom” William Hadl on Friday, March 13, 1946, at Danforth Chapel in Lawrence, KS. He preceded her in death January 16, 1997.

Nadine worked alongside her husband for 17 years at Hadl Body Shop, she took care of the accounting and books. She was a long time member of the Southside Church of Christ. Nadine loved to cook, sew, and babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren, they knew her as grandma “Naye”. Nadine lived in Pleasant Hill, MO, nine years before moving back home to be with her girls the last year and nine months of her life. She was and always will be a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Survivors include two daughters Shirley Hadl, Nancy and David Roberts, all of Lawrence, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, four brothers David, Fred, Don, and Ruben Farrier; four sisters, Maxine, Violet Farrier, Geraldine Hadjukavich and Dorothy Rake.

Frances Patricia Reeves

A visitation for Frances Patricia Reeves, 75, Leawood, will be Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. A private burial will take place at a later date.

Frances was born in Harris county, Texas, on January 15, 1940, the daughter of the late Pelham and Odelle Mott Jones. She peacefully entered God’s Kingdom with her family by her side on May 22, 2015.

She was married to her best friend and the love of her life Travis Reeves who preceded her in death in 2006.

Frances was a loving mother who’s greatest joy was being with her family. Most of all, she looked forward to seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed music, movies, boating and fishing. She attended Southern Baptist Church in Overland Park.

Survivors include daughter Jennifer Reeves; sons Michael and wife Amy Reeves, Mitchell and wife Lorrie Reeves. Grandchildren John, Brandon (Savannah), Ryan (Abby), Amy (Matt) and 5 great grandchildren. Two sisters, Cay Wheeler and Martha Keeley, one brother, Thomas Jones, and one aunt, Bessie Hodges.

Betty Ann Landree Dickinson

Betty Ann Landree Dickinson died on May 22,2015 at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor after suffering from serious health problems. She was 82. Cremation was private. A gathering of relatives and friends will be held in the fall at a date to be determined.

Betty moved to Lawrence with her husband in 1991 after a 20 year career as research associate and quality assurance officer with Hazleton Laboratories in Vienna, VA.,a Washington, D.C. suburb. From 1991 until 1995. she worked part time as a medical technologist at Watkins Student Health Center at the University of Kansas.

She was born at home , Dec. 14,1932, in Keytesville, Mo.,the daughter of Roy Gray Landree and Margaret Virginia Rucker Landree. The family had moved to Keytesville when her parents lost their bookkeeping jobs in Kansas City during the Great Depression. With the outbreak of World War II, they returned to the Kansas City area to take jobs in defense industries.

Betty graduated from Shawnee Mission High School near the top of her class. She worked summers as a ward clerk at the KU Medical Center. She attended Lindenwood College for Women in St. Charles, Mo. on a full academic scholarship in 1950-51 before transferring to the University of Kansas.

She married William B. Dickinson III in Danforth Chapel on the KU campus in 1953. When her husband graduated and was drafted during the final days of the Korean War, she left KU. After bearing two sons, she resumed her studies at American University in Washington, D.C., and graduated from KU with a major in microbiology in 1968. She received certification as a registered medical technologist from American University in 1969.

After fully retiring from Hazleton Laboratories and moving to Lawrence with her husband, she became a Master Gardener with the Douglas County Extension Service and frequently fielded phoned-in questions from local residents. She was active in the University Women’s Club, the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and supported Friends of the University Theatre and Friends of the School of Music. She traveled widely abroad on garden tours and cruises, and took special pleasure in watching the Kansas City Royals on television. Attending piano recitals by KU students on campus and at the home of Dave and Gunda Hiebert were magical occasions for her.

She is survived by her husband, of the Lawrence home; two sons, William B. Dickinson IV of Overland Park, Kan., and David Alan Dickinson of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Master Gardeners program of Douglas County, Friends of the KU Theatre, or Friends of the KU School of Music.
