Charles L. ‘Butch’ Ashley

A Celebration of Life visitation for Charles L. ‘Butch’ Ashley, 61, Lawrence, will be at held from 4 to 6 pm Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Butch passed away Saturday, June 23, 2018, after a brief and valiant battle with cancer.

He was born August 5, 1956, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Charles H. and Lorena M. (Girard) Ashley. He graduated from Stafford (Kan.) High School, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Kansas, and later earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Wichita State University. Butch worked at Stormont Vail Health in Topeka from 2003 until his death, finishing his career as the Director of Surgery Business Operations. He had worked at Hillcrest Bowl in Lawrence from 1975-78 and 1980-83, as the staff accountant at Pratt Regional Medical Center from 1983-88, as the Chief Financial Officer at Del Norte (Colo.) Hospital from 1988-92, and as the Vice President for Clinics and Professional Development at Pratt Regional Medical Center from 1992-2003. Butch was a family man, and enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, and watching KU Jayhawk basketball and KC Royals baseball.

He married Karen L. Cramer on June 3, 1978, in Lawrence, and together they enjoyed 40 years of marriage. She survives of the home. Other survivors include four children: Daniel Ashley of Eudora and significant other Megan Walker of Lawrence, Sarah (Ashley) Preston and husband Brian of Lenexa, Andrew Ashley and wife Laura of Lawrence, and Katie Ashley of Lawrence; three siblings: Rick Ashley, Karen M. Ashley, and Ginger Callison and husband Tim, all of Wichita; and eight grandchildren: Eily, Maddie, Mitchell, Clark, Boston, Charlotte, Anna, and Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Anna Ashley, and his sister Debbie Lowe.

Kenneth Eugene Daniels

Services for Kenneth Daniels, 93, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday June 28th at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Please wear casual clothes, as those that knew him know he was not one to dress in much other than a western shirt, jeans, and his boots along with his cap. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery- no service planned at the cemetery.

Mr. Daniels passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at his daughter’s home.

He was born November 3, 1924 in Pleasant Grove, Kansas. He went through 8th grade in the one room country school. He worked various country jobs until enlisting in the Army during World War II. Kenneth served as an artillery specialist from 1943 to 1946.

He was married to Alma (Corp) Daniels for 49 years before she passed in 2001. Survivors include a daughter, Julie, Lawrence; four grandsons – Ross, Horseheads, New York; Ryan, Kyle, and Justin, all of Lawrence. Other nephews and nieces also survive. He was preceded in death by 6 brothers and sisters.

Kenneth, known as Kenny or Danny, worked at the Kansas Color Press for 30 years and worked other various jobs following, including driving for the Senior Center.

Kenneth and Alma were founding members of the Douglas County Trail Riders and were active members for many years. Horses were a large part of their lives along with their daughter’s. Horse shows through KSHSC, Trail Riders and 4-H took up most of their time during the summers. Kenneth was active in all his grandchildren’s lives including learning and watching the sport of hockey; sitting through hot Kansas summer nights watching baseball (coffee and lawn chair always in tow!); and watching bowling.

Family will receive friends from 4-5:30 on Wednesday, June 27 at the funeral home.

Daryl Dean Dwyer

Daryl Dean Dwyer, 87, of Lawrence, Kansas passed away June 24, 2018 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born February 8, 1931 in Wahoo, Nebraska, the son of Dennis and Mathilda (Jurgens) Dwyer.

He grew up in Wahoo and graduated from Wahoo High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He then worked for the BF Goodrich Tire Co before starting D&D Tire in December of 1971. He owned and operated D&D Tire until his retirement.

On November 28, 1959 he married Norma Jean Follett in Kansas City, MO. Other survivors include daughter Sandy Hopkins (Mike) of Granbury, TX, son Philip of Lawrence, five grandchildren Matthew Hopkins, Eric (Sara) Hopkins, Jackson Dwyer, Ike Dwyer, and MaryKathyrn Dwyer, and great granddaughter Elenore Hopkins.

Daryl enjoyed golf and was a member of Sertoma, the American Legion, MidAmerica Tire Dealers Association (past president), Big Blue Sportsman Club, and TPA.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 27 at 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. A Funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 10 am on June 28. Burial will be 1 pm at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Janet Glee Green

Janet Glee Green, age 83, of Lawrence died Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Medicalodge in Eudora, KS.

Mrs. Green was born July 3, 1934 in Kingman Kansas, the daughter of Otto H. and Zella M. (Johnston) Swope. She graduated from Kingman High School in 1952. She took courses in elementary education at Pratt Junior College.

She married Eldon L. Green in Kingman, KS on July 29, 1953. The couple resided in Pratt, KS for most of their married life. Mr. Green died on March 5, 2002 in Lawrence, KS.

Survivors include 3 sons, Steven (wife Julie) of Yates Center, KS, Scott (wife Maria) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Christopher (wife Patricia) of Wellsville, KS as well as 1 brother, Dean Swope of Kingman, KS. She had 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Janet was a homemaker in Pratt while raising her 3 sons and later was employed at the Pratt Christian Church and at 2 insurance agencies in Pratt and at the City of Pratt Sanitation Dept. After leaving Pratt in 1991, she was employed by JC Penney Co in both Wichita, KS and Lawrence KS. She worked at Ortho Kansas in Lawrence KS as a medical records clerk until her retirement.

Mrs Green has donated her body to the Willed Body Program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Private memorial services will be conducted at a later date.

The family suggests memorials to the Visiting Nurses Hospice (VNA) of Douglas County KS in care of the funeral home.

John (Jack) Antoine Suprenant

John (Jack) Suprenant passed away on June 18, 2018 in Lawrence, KS.

Jack was born in Glens Falls, NY, on March 22, 1931, to Antoine and Yvonne Suprenant.

Jack grew up in Hudson Falls, NY and graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 1948, where he played football and basketball.  He married the love of his life, Jean Marie White on October 2, 1954.

Jack was veteran of the U.S. Army Intelligence Agency where he served from 1951-1953 during the Korean War.  While in the army, he put his basketball skills to test in a game against the Harlem Globetrotters.  He was honorably discharged in 1953.

Jack was employed by Ciba-Geigy in Glens Falls, NY for over 30 years, where he worked as a laboratory technician, and later as a research and development laboratory supervisor.  Jack was very proud that he directed fifteen chemists even though he had not attended college.

In 2000, Jack moved to Lawrence, KS and became an avid University of Kansas basketball fan, attending all the home games of both men’s and women’s teams.  Another highlight from his life in Lawrence was helping to build an experimental aircraft at the Lawrence Municipal Airport.

Jack was quiet, but quick witted.  He will be remembered as a loving father and sports enthusiast.  Friends and family will miss his homemade cheesecakes, and his remarkable collection of 754 miniature liquor nips.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife Jean (White) Suprenant in 1995, and his brother Donald E. Suprenant in 2015.

He is survived by his daughter Linda L. (Suprenant) St. Germain and her husband Bob of East Wakefield, NH; and his daughter Kathy A. Suprenant and her husband William L. Dentler, Jr. of Lawrence, KS.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, June 25, 2018 at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc. in Hudson Falls.

Norman Richard Hazen

Norman Richard Hazen died June 18, 2018, while in hospice care and with his daughter and son by his side. He was 93 years old.

Norman was born January 7, 1925, in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Clarence Edward Hazen and Maude (Mozley) Hazen. His brother, Kenneth Hazen, was older than Norman, while his sister, Lois (Hazen) Campbell, was younger.

Norman grew up near the Marais des Cygnes River and grew to love woodworking and gardening in high school, hobbies that would stay with him throughout his life.

Upon graduation from Ottawa High School, Norman immediately joined the Navy where he served as a signalman aboard the U.S.S. Leutze in the Pacific during World War II. After several amphibious landings and two sea battles, his ship was attacked by a kamikaze pilot near Japan. Norman and the ship returned to the states, and during that time the war came to a close.

After more than two and a half years in the Navy, Norman attended Ottawa University on the G.I. Bill. He later began working for the city of Ottawa, first in the water and light department as the city’s only meter reader, and later as a lineman on a bucket truck. He ended his career as a supervisor of meter readers and operating a service truck. In this way Norman visited nearly every business and home in Ottawa during his four-decade career with the city.

While working for the city he met Elizabeth “Betty” Scherling, and the two were married on November 23, 1952. The couple had three children, Jeanne, Greg and Keith. As a leader in the 4-H club, Norman taught many members of the club woodworking and electrical skills. Norman was also a lover of animals, and the family had pet chickens, rabbits, pheasant, dogs, cats and a lamb, along with a couple of ornery geese.

He and Betty enjoyed traveling abroad after retirement, making friends as they went. He also used his woodworking skills and made an elaborate treehouse that was the highlight of his grandsons’ summers.

Norman maintained a large garden and yard at the couple’s home on Beech Street in Ottawa that was meticulously cared for until Norman and Betty moved to Lawrence, Kansas.

Norman and Betty lived at several retirement and assisted living communities in Lawrence late in life, and after Betty’s death, Norman spent his last year and a half at the home of Greg and his wife, Patricia Henshall, north of Lawrence. Betty and Norman were married for nearly 60 years at the time of her death.

Norman will be remembered by his friends and family as a kind, honest, hardworking man with a sense of humor that never relied on ridiculing anyone else.

Keith and Betty died before Norman, as did his parents, his brother, Kenneth Hazen, and his sister, Lois Campbell. Norman is survived by Jeanne Fridell and her husband, Max, and their son, Zach, and Zach’s wife, Margaret Hair; Greg and Patricia; Keith’s widow, Jaci, and her sons Adam and Tyler, and Tyler’s wife, Dana.

A memorial graveside service for close friends and family will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 21st at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.

Jerry C. Altman

A memorial visitation for Jerry C. Altman, 81, Lawrence, KS will be held Friday, June 29, 2018, from 5:30 to 7 pm at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Private inurnment with military honors will be conducted at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Jerry passed away surrounded by loved ones, Saturday, June 16, 2018, at his home.

He was born Jan. 17, 1937, in Bellingham, Wash., the son of Waldo E. and Gertrude M. Kinley Altman. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1955.  Shortly after High School Jerry enlisted with the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Furse Destroyer till 1959. He married Corale A. Cully in Aug 1961. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Library & Museum was where he continued his government service with the  Supervision of Grounds & Maintenance of the facility and archives for over 30 years. After retirement in 1994, Jerry and Corale moved to Lawrence, Ks.  He enjoyed driving the school buses for the Lawrence School District in his spare time.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Corale of 57 years; daughters Rene MacMurray and Carrie Williams (Steve Williams) and four grandchildren. Tyler and Ian MacMurray, Megan and Katie Williams all of Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Altman.

Erma A. Bruns

Funeral services for Erma A. Bruns, 95, Lawrence, will be at 10 am Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brian Elster officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Erma died Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at her home.

She was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Acme, Kan., the daughter of Otis Augustus and Emily Josephine Harrison Sexton. She attended schools in Solomon. Erma retired as the office administrator for USS Agrichemical. She was a member and past president of the Lawrence Women’s Bowling Association, a member of the AT&T Telephone Pioneers and the VFW Auxiliary, and a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed bowling and going to tournaments, Coachmen RV camping rallies, traveling, square dancing, and time spent with her family.

Erma married Kenneth Ivan ‘Bud’ Bruns on July 7, 1956, in Abilene, Kan. He preceded her in death in 2015. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, LCDR Brian K. Bruns, her first husband, Alvin LeRoy Engle, and seven siblings, Clayton Sexton, Dora Darling, Goldia Miller, Mildred Lankford, Floyd Sexton, Twila Stammeyer, and Larena Sexton. Survivors include four children, Randy Engle and wife Connie, Kansas City, Mo., Sharon Rose and husband Monte, Lawrence, Rusty Bruns and wife Sheila, Baldwin City, and Dean Bruns and wife Julie, McPherson; seven grandchildren, Shawn and Joshua Engle, Kelle Rose, Laura Rose Clawson, and Cody, Cameron, and Caden Bruns; and three great grandchildren.

Friends may call from 8 am to 8 pm Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 2 to 4 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to Visiting Nurses/Hospice or Trinity Lutheran Church Pet Pantry, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

Onita Myer

Memorial services for Onita Myer, 72, Lawrence, will be 10 am, Friday, June 15, 2018, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be from 6-7 pm Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

She died Monday, June 11, 2018, at her sister’s home.

Onita was born May 27, 1946, in Sikeston, MO, the oldest daughter of George Roy and Minnie Juanita Nichols Morris.

She attended Lawrence Public School and she graduated from Lawrence High School in 1964. Later she went on to get her Associate’s Degree in Business from Baker University.

Onita was employed at Bendix-King for several years working at both Lawrence and Olathe, KS Locations. She loved to read and spend time with family and friends.

She and Sterling L. Beebe were married March 17, 1967 in Lawrence. They divorced in 1984. She then married John Edson Myer on July 13, 1985, he preceded her in death on February 2, 2018.

Onita is survived by her two sisters Mary K. Morris and her husband Bruce Humphreys, Overland Park, KS and Annette Evans and her husband Greg of Lawrence. Three nephews Robert C Mugridge Jr., Benjamin Mugridge and his wife Carrie, Jakeb Evans all of Lawrence. One Great niece, Madilyn Mugridge and two great nephews Dalton and Brooks Mugridge.
