Homer Lee ‘Bob’ Broyles

Funeral services for Homer Lee ‘Bob’ Broyles, 84, Worden, will be at 10 am Saturday at Worden United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bud Tuxhorn officiating. Burial will follow in Worden Cemetery.

Mr. Broyles died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Hwy. 59, south of Baldwin Junction,

He was born Aug. 27, 1928, in Seneca, Neb., the son of Howard and Marie Madron Broyles. He graduated from McLouth High School, and later served in the U.S. Navy Air Force as a tailgunner.

Bob owned and operated Broyles Texaco in Lawrence and Worden Agricultural Services in Worden. He most recently was a farmer and rancher for over 40 years. He was a member of Worden United Methodist Church.

He married Marilyn Gay Everley on Dec. 15, 1951. She preceded him in death on Dec. 15, 2003. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jan Green, in 2008.

Survivors include a daughter, Patti Broyles Harper and husband Jeremy, Baldwin City, and a son, Lee Broyles and wife Tami, Baldwin City; a son in law, Tracy Green, Lawrence; two brothers, Don and Howard (Tom) Broyles; grandchildren, Wesley Broyles, Jenny Broyles, Willie Broyles and wife Katie, Hannah Broyles Hale, Tony Hadley, and Nicholas, Patrick, and Matthew Green; and great grandchildren Wyatt, Heather, and Hailey.

Friends may call Friday from 3 to 7 pm at Worden United Methodist Church, where the family will receive them from 5 to 7 p.m. Family and friends are invited to join the family for a meal afterward.

Diane M. Wilson

A memorial visitation for Diane M. Wilson, 70, Lawrence, will be from 6:30-8:00 pm Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mrs. Wilson died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

She was born July 16, 1942, in Wamego, the daughter of John and Florence Bretz. She was a homemaker, and had worked as an aide in the Shawnee Mission and Olathe public schools. She was an avid bridge player.

She married Raymond F. Wilson on Nov. 24, 1962, in Wamego. He survives at their home in Lawrence. Other survivors include three sons, Lance Wilson and wife Lisa, Rosemount, Minn., Derek Wilson and wife Pat, Kansas City, Mo., and Craig Wilson, Olathe; a brother, Don Bretz and wife Betty, Wamego; and three granddaughters, Abby, Molly, and Emily Wilson.

Lloyd Jameson

Services for Lloyd Harry Jameson, 88, Lawrence, will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Vinland Cemetery, Vinland, Kansas.

Lloyd died Thursday, August 23, 2012, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehab.

He was born in Billings, Montana, on July 26, 1924, the son of Roy and Myrtle Stevenson Jameson. Along with his family, he moved to Vinland Valley and was raised there on the family farm. Lloyd continued to farm until health issues forced him to retire several years ago.

During World War II, Lloyd served in the U.S. Army from May 1943 to February 1946. He drove a bus for Greyhound lines for 43 years. He drove charter trips as well as his primary route from Kansas City to Tulsa, logging over 4 million safe miles.

Lloyd is survived by his son, Scott Jameson and wife, Trina, of Baldwin City; a grandson, Robert Jameson and wife, Aftan, of Lawrence; step grandchildren, Amy Webb and husband, Andy of Baldwin City and Justin McClintic both of Lawrence; a brother Earl Jameson of Lawrence; two step great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, his companion of many years, Mary Copp of Lawrence. Lloyd is preceded in death by his son, Roger and brother, Howard.

Friends may call from noon until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Alice R. Akin

Funeral services for Alice R. Akin, 84, Lawrence will be 2pm. Mon., Aug. 27, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home with Pastor Mitch Todd officiating. Entombment will be private at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Akin died Friday at St. Luke’s Hospital.

She was born Mar. 30, 1928 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia the daughter of William and Cora Bell Jolly Carraway.

Mrs. Akin worked as a RN for Dr. Brunfeldt at Reed Medical Group for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and several bridge clubs.

She married Ray Nelson Akin on May 23, 1953 in Stony Creek, VA., he died Apr. 3, 1996. She was also preceded in death by 3 sisters and 1 brother.

Survivors include a son Gary N. Akin of Hunting Beach, CA, daughter Kristi L. Akin of Eudora, and 2 grandsons Ryan & Spencer Akin.

Friends may call Sunday 3pm. to 8pm. at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 1pm. until service time Monday.

Roger Clarence Bruhns

A Committal Service at graveside for Roger Clarence Bruhns, 79, Lawrence, will be at 10 am Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

 Roger died on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.  He was a longtime resident of Lawrence, Kansas, and a Hallmark retiree.  Roger was born Dec. 14, 1932, in Waverly, Kansas, and attended school in Waverly.  After high school, he went into the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran.

 Survivors living in Lawrence include his second wife, Patricia Sierra Macrellis Bruhns, daughters Debbie Bruhns and Linda Bruhns Torkelson and husband Mark, and sons Rodney Bruhns and wife Sandy, and Gary Bruhns and wife Shannon.  He has three granddaughters, Brittany, Madison, and Delanie Bruhns, and one grandson, Lance Bruhns.

 Living out of town are his step daughter, Georgia Macrellis Lansing and husband Jeff, and step son, Major James G. Macrellis Jr. and wife Renee, and two grandsons, Peter Macrellis and Anthony Lansing.

Martha L. (Bell) Barr

A Celebration of Life for Martha L. (Bell) Barr, 87, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Kent Winters-Hazelton officiating. Private inurnment will take place at Pioneer Cemetery on the University of Kansas campus.

Mrs. Barr died Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

She was born Nov. 23, 1924, in Birmingham, Ala., the daughter of Jesse Allen and Geneva Gregory Bell. She graduated from Ensley High School in Birmingham in 1942, and later attended the University of Alabama and the University of Kansas.

She married Billie Griffith ‘Bill’ Barr on Apr. 28, 1945, in Birmingham. He preceded her in death on Mar. 20, 2006. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Bell and Buron Bell, and one sister, Mary Bell Latham.

Martha is a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who dedicated her life to helping others. She loved cooking and gardening. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, the University Women’s Club, the KU Alumni Association, Prairie Acres Garden Club, and P.E.O. She was a Girl Scout leader for ten years in Prairie Village and Lawrence, and volunteered for many groups, including Presbyterian Manor, the Lawrence Public Library, and local schools

Survivors include a son, William G. Barr (Lise), Omaha; two daughters, Patricia Barr Clarke (Mark), Denver, and Deborah Barr (Jerzy Wirth), Wilmington, Del.; seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

John A. “Jack” Moorhead Sr.

Graveside services with military honors for John A “Jack” Moorhead Sr. 86, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday August 21, 2012 at Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott Kansas.

Mr. Moorhead died Friday August 17, 2012 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

He was born January 19, 1926, in Chicago, IL, the son of Arthur and Hazel Virginia Johns Moorhead.  He graduated from St. Johns Military Academy, Delafield, Wisconsin in 1944.

Mr. Moorhead served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army in WW II with the 1st Infantry from Fort Riley, Kansas.

After his service he moved to Lawrence and went to college at the University of Kansas.  He was one of the founding members of the Jayhawk Review.  He also helped start the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and formed a band that played all the dances.  Years later he volunteered his time helping the girls basketball team and girls track team and was a KU Relays volunteer across three decades.

After three years at KU, Captain Moorhead re-enlisted in the U.S. Army joining the 25th Infantry as a combat officer in Korea in 1951. At the conclusion of his tour of duty and enlistment, Mr. Moorhead moved to Wichita, Kansas where he worked for Boeing Aviation until 1964.  Mr. Moorhead left Boeing to start his own company, (John A. Moorhead Associates), and was recognized world wide as a leader in Training and Consulting for Computer Controlled Manufacturing.

In 1966 he moved back to Lawrence and was a founding member of the Numerical Control Society, (NCS), which was one of the first organizations in computer aided design and manufacturing.  In 198o, his book, “Numerical Control Fundamentals” was published as the NCS bible.  Over the next 16 years he traveled the world training engineers and machinists in Japan, Kenya, England, Germany, Bulgaria, Israel, Switzerland, Canada and throughout the United States.

Mr. Moorhead, a life long Episcopalian, was a Lay Reader at St. John’s Episcopal Church inWichita and was instrumental in starting St. Andrew’s Episcopal in Derby, Kansas serving as a Lay Reader, Elder and raising funds to build the church that still stands there today.

Survivors include one son, Jack “Kim” Moorhead Jr., Kansas City, MO, one daughter Melissa Wilson, Cicero, Indiana, one brother, James “Jim” Moorhead and wife Cecilia, Lone Tree, Colorado, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Thomas A. Moorhead, and a daughter, Virginia “Ginger” Folks.

Helen Rawlings

Helen Rawlings, 76, formerly of Springfield, Mo., died August 5, 2012, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Ks.

Helen was born November 11, 1936, in Springfield, Mo. to Roy G and Jesse Gregory. She attended Southwestern Missouri State and was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She owned and operated the H&R Block business in Monett, Mo for over 15 years.

She is survived by her 3 children: Cheryl Weaver and husband Doug of Lawrence, Ks; Mike Rawlings and wife Lori of Columbia, Mo; Pat Rawlings of San Jose, CA,10 grandchildren, and her siblings Eleanor Pierce and husband Bill, Leroy Gregory and wife Vanda, and Roger Gregory.

Services will be held in Dallas, Tx. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions sent to Douglas Co. Senior Center, 745 Vermont St., Lawrence, KS 66044.

Shirley Ann Doane

Shirley Ann Doane, 76, passed away from natural causes on August 13, 2012 at her home in Lawrence, KS.

Shirley was a homemaker and longtime friend of Bill W. Shirley was born May 16, 1936 in Hondo, NM, the daughter of Sydney E. Langley and Falba Moss Langley. They preceded her in death.

On June 1, 1952 she was united in marriage to George R. Doane. He preceded her in death on February 25, 1973. She was also preceded in death by her son, David Allen Doane.

Survivors include two brothers, Garland Edsel Langley, Aurora, CO and Isaac Boyd Langley, Exeter, CA; two sons and a daughter, George R. Doane, Jr., Livingston, TX, Dennis Wade Doane, San Antonio, TX and Danita Ann Long, Lawrence, KS.

The family will greet friends and family at her Celebration of Life from 12:00-3:00 Sunday, August 19, 2012 at Lake Shawnee Shelter House #1 in Topeka, KS.
