Rosella Frances Beers

Memorial services for Rosella Frances Beers, 87, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Mrs. Beers died Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at her home.

She was born August 16, 1930, in Lawrence, the daughter of Harvey Albert and Lydia May Farmer House. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School. Mrs. Beers was a homemaker, and enjoyed painting and reading. She was a member of Southside Church of Christ for nearly 70 years.

She married Glen M. Beers on April 20, 1947, in Lawrence. They would have celebrated their 71st anniversary next month. He survives of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Linda Stanwix and husband Gary, Lawrence, and Marsha Farrier and husband Dan, Georgetown, Tex.; four grandchildren, Shelley Tindel, Emily McGhee, Kyle Stanwix, and Jennifer Hamon; seven great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four siblings, Jimmy House, Lloyd House, Maxine Ridgeway, and Ray House.

Robin Sue Kidney

Funeral services for Robin Sue Kidney, 58, Lawrence, will be 11 am Monday, April 2, 2018, at Unity of Lawrence. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka, KS.

She died Monday, March 26, 2018, at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Facility.

Robin was born May 13, 1959, in Kansas City, MO, the daughter of Howard Keith Kidney and Rosemary A. Schmidt. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1978.

She worked at the University of Kansas for 30 Years in the Dining Hall as a pot and pan washer. She earned her picture on the wall of fame for her 30 years of service.  Robin held an officer position, as a Madam Conductor for the Fraternal Eagles Organization of Lawrence.  She was a long time member of the Electric Car Association. Robin belonged to the Unity Church of Lawrence for 20 years and did all the recordings of the Sunday services.

Robin did score keeping at Conroy’s pubs Trivia on Wednesday nights for 15 years. She loved to go to various car shows, hang out at the Merc with friends and enjoyed playing scrabble with friends on Tuesday nights. She was also a storm chaser for Douglas County.

Survivors include three siblings, Patricia L Beaver, Oskaloosa, KS, Thomas Ford, San Diego, CA, Michael Ford, Holton, KS; niece Holly Jo Beaver, Topeka; nephew Michael Ford, Topeka.

Friends may call from 12-8 pm Sunday, April 1, 2018, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.  A visitation will take place from 5-6 pm. The family suggests all who attend the funeral and visitation please wear your KU gear in her honor.

Michael Gale ‘Mike’ McManness

Funeral services for Michael McManness, 64, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Saturday at Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gary O’Flannagan and Don Cunningham officiating. A visitation will follow the service. Michael died unexpectedly on Saturday, Mar. 24, 2018, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Michael Gale McManness was born October 28, 1953 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri to Soney Anthon and Erma Glea Cobb McManness.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Rene Page McManness and children Rebecca Glea McManness, David Anthon and Sarah Elizabeth McManness all of Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas, and Matthew Buler McManness of Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, and one granddaughter, Gracelynn Dawn McManness of Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas.

He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother Darrell Anthon McManness.

Michael graduated from Lawrence High School in 1971. He worked for Francis Sporting Goods as a teenager, then as a commercial and industrial Sheet Metal Worker for Sheet Metal Workers, Local No. 2 for 44 years. He retained his license to sell Real Estate for 35 years. He was a partner in McManness Brothers Real Estate Management for 20 years, continuing to own and manage Real Estate until his death.

Michael was a Southern Baptist, attending First Southern Baptist, Grace Baptist, Cornerstone Southern Baptist, and Antioch Baptist Church during his lifetime.

He loved his God, his family, and his country. He was a life-long Kansas University Basketball and Football fan, and spent many happy hours watching them play and following the recruiting. As a young adult, he became fascinated by Geneaology, eventually tracing his family line back to Daniel Boone and the early settlers.

Vera D. Neal

Memorial services for Vera Neal, 84, Williamsburg, will be from 2-4 pm, Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 211 E South St, Williamsburg, KS 66095.

She died Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at Bridge Haven Village, Lawrence, KS.

Vera graduated from Williamsburg High School.

She married Charles Lester Neal on June 21, 1952, in Williamsburg, Kansas, he preceded her in death earlier this year.

Survivors include her Daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and George Swisher; grandson and his wife, Hayden and Krystina Swisher; her granddaughter and her husband, Lindsey and Sean Deaton, and grandson, Wesley Hoffman.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and a daughter Connie Hoffman.

Patricia C. Guy

Patricia Carol Guy, 83, of Lawrence, died at 5:45 AM, Monday, March 19, 2018 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 19th, 1934 in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Carroll and Blanche Pauley. She is survived by her husband, Willard Guy of Lawrence; her three children, John (Rita) Holmes of Stratham, New Hampshire, David (Irene Alarcon) Holmes of Mequon, Wisconsin, and Amy (Jeff) Hargroves of Kansas City, Missouri; three step-children, Pam (Bob) Romanko of Coos Bay, Oregon, Cyndi Guy of Casper, Wyoming, and David (Ingelise) Guy of Truckee, California; four grandchildren, Samara and Annika Holmes, and Jackson and Katie Hargroves; eight step-grandchildren, Ally and Katie Romanko, Eric, Logan and Abrienne Vierkant, and Nielsen, Maren and Andersen Guy; a brother Bruce (Marianne) Pauley; and two nephews, Mark and Glenn Pauley.

Pat lived in Lawrence for the past 13 years, after having lived in Topeka, Kansas for 13 years as a pastor at First Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa in 1956, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in music. While studying at Grinnell, she met her first husband, Bob Holmes, marrying shortly after graduation. They lived in Illinois, Iowa and later Wisconsin, and had three children during their 24 years together.

After this phase of her life, Pat went in a new direction, first studying art, and then finding her true passion, theology. At the age of 51, she began a rigorous course of study at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, obtaining a Master of Divinity in 1988. She was ordained in 1989 and Pat’s first pastoral assignment was in the hills of the Kettle Moraine, Wisconsin, where she served a year with Margaret Towner, the first ordained female Presbyterian Minister in the United States. She then accepted an Associate Pastor position with the First Presbyterian Church in Topeka, Kansas, where she served for thirteen fulfilling years. In 2003, she met and married Willard (Bill) Guy, enjoying 13 years of love, companionship and laughter.

To honor and pay tribute to her educational opportunities, in 2016, Pat established an endowment at Grinnell College—the Reverend Patricia Pauley 1956 Endowed Scholarship—to further the study of writing by students at Grinnell. In 2017 she established the Reverend Patricia Pauley Scholarship at McCormick Theological Seminary for the advancement of women in the Christian ministry.

Pat was a lifelong lover of travel, music and art. Her intellect, compassion and smile will be sorely missed by all who knew her. A Celebration of Pat’s Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, March 27th, at Plymouth Congregational Church, in Lawrence, Kansas, Pat’s beloved church of the past decade. Reverend Peter Luckey will be officiating, with assistance from Reverend Neil Weatherhogg of Topeka and Reverend Eleanor McCormick. A brief reception will follow the service. Pat has chosen to be cremated with her ashes going to her family cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Bradley Joe ‘Brad’ Kahler

At sunrise, March 15th, Brad’s spirit slipped quietly away and rose with the sun into glory, where he met his savior and intimate companion, Jesus.  Brad was a quiet, contemplative renovator of hearts and homes.

Born in Washington D.C. on January 9, 1943, he settled in Kansas with his family at the age of 13.  Parents: Roland and Verneda (Appel) Kahler (both deceased).  Siblings: Anita (Cobb)(deceased), Carolyn (Knoernschild), Donna (Stirn) and Eddie (deceased at 7).

Brad graduated with honors from Shawnee Mission East High School where he also enjoyed playing sports.  Lawrence became his home while earning his Bachelors, Masters and PhD in Counseling Psychology.

While at KU, several new loves arose in his heart that would be cherished the rest of his life.  The first, a deeper love for Christ fostered by his connection with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship.  The second, a passion for KU basketball.  The third, Beth Everhart, who struck his heart and bound their souls together.

The two became one on December 23, 1966. They had four daughters and a son; Stacy (Hinman), Kama (Rich), Benjamin (deceased in infancy), Kendra (Oberzan) and Lindsey (Foster).

Ottawa, Ks became their home in ’77 where Brad was a Psychologist at Ottawa Bible Church and Osawatomie State Hospital.  He later started a private practice, Family Tree Counseling Services and founded Ottawa Home Fellowship.

Brad and Beth currently have 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren who have become the crowning affection of their hearts. Brad leaves a legacy of faith, love and curiosity.

Mary Kathryn Husted Kufahl

Mary Kathryn Husted Kufahl passed away March 17, 2018, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

Mary K. was born August 3, 1937, in Lawrence, the daughter of Clyde and Pauline Brune Husted. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1955.

Mary K. married Don L. Kufahl in 1965, he preceded her in death in 1997. She is survived by two children: Kevin Kufahl, Lawrence, KS, Kathryn Poteet, Red Hook, NY; five grandchildren: Daniel Kufahl, Alyssa, Audrey, Charity, and Owen Poteet; two sisters: Barbara Muiller, Topeka, KS, and Carolyn Phillips, Lawrence, KS.

She worked as a Cosmetologist at Brandon Woods for many years. Mary K. loved to garden and make things grow. A special talent of hers was to nurture seedlings into mature plants or trees.

Memorial services for Mary Kathryn Husted Kufahl, 80, Lawrence, will be 2 pm, Friday, March 23, 2018, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. A visitation will take place from 1:30 to services time on Friday.

Marvin Joseph Groh

Services for Marvin Joseph Groh, 91, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont. A visitation will be held after the service.

Marvin died Friday, March 16, 2018, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

Marvin Joseph Groh was born August 23, 1926 to Rev. Joseph Peter Groh and Suzie Ione DeTar Groh in Havensville, KS.

Marvin was a veteran of the United States Navy for 8 years serving in both World War II and Korean War. He was a Seaman First Class Radioman, continuing that interest later in life by becoming a ham radio operator with the call letters KOHHK.

On June 12, 1959 Marvin was united in marriage with Lois Mae James at the Lawrence First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, KS. She survives of the home. He was preceded in death by his sister, Arline Seidel Kurst of Trenton, MO. He is survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Chris Forshee, a niece, was a great support to him.

Marvin earned his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Emporia State University. He started the data processing program, formerly Kaw Area Vocational Technical School. His 24 years teaching experience at KAVTS was shortened because of spinal cord surgery.

He sang in numerous church choirs, was a member and officer of the Lawrence chapter of the Society for the Preservation of Barbershop Chorus, and a member of the Topeka Chapter of DPMA. Marvin was a long-time member of the VFW and the Lawrence United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the First United Methodist Church Choir and be sent in care of the funeral home.
