Robert James ‘Bob’ Edgin

No services are planned for Robert James ‘Bob’ Edgin, 86, Lawrence, who died Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Cremation is planned.

He was born Mar. 10, 1929, in Altus, Ark., the son of Grover Cleveland and Auda Marie Casey Edgin. He graduated from high school in Altus, and later attended the University of Arkansas. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Bob was a mechanical engineer for E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. for 26 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Alford-Clarke Post 852 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lawrence, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He married Donna Duncan on Dec. 25, 1951, in Clarksville, Ark. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Debra Edgin, Lawrence; a son, Dale R. Edgin and wife Charisse, Lawrence; two brothers, Thomas Edgin, Ozark, Ark., and David Edgin and wife Sylvia, Ozark, Ark.; three grandchildren, Michael Scott Davenport, Robbin Renee Ward, and Brody Duncan Edgin; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Dianea Kramer, and three siblings, William ‘Billy’ Edgin, Freda Marie Ree, and Betty Watson.

Leah Pauline “Polly” Roberts

Leah Pauline “Polly” Roberts walked on from this life on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at Stormont-Vail in Topeka, KS.

Born May 5, 1936 in Yuma, AZ, to Henry Thomas and Margaret Opal (Guilliams) Clowers, Polly was an only child. She graduated from Pattonsburg, MO, High School, and attended Research Hospital Nursing School in Kansas City. She married Glen Melvin Roberts on December 18, 1955 in Lawrence, KS, where they raised their family after Glen graduated from K-State. They moved to Topeka and were active in Abdullah Shrine. Glen preceded her in death in 1988.

Polly worked for SRS Children’s Division and for Let’s Help while in Topeka, and loved helping people. She followed her daughter’s family to White City and Abilene, KS, where she also made life-long friends. She moved back to Topeka in 2006, and lived there until her passing.

At the time of her death, Polly was living at a retirement community, where she had many loving friends. She enjoyed chatting, organizing community events and activities, keeping up with city, state and national politics, and helping community members in times of need. She was an avid K-State fan. She was a staunch advocate for anyone she felt was not being treated fairly, and had all of her Legislators on “speed dial”. She enjoyed life, a good laugh, and ‘sharing the road’ on this journey.

She is survived by a son, Glen E. Roberts, Topeka; a daughter, Dr. Dorothy Roberts Arvizu and her son-in-law, Bruce Arvzu, Sedalia, MO, a granddaughter, Alexis Arvizu, St. Louis, MO, and a step-granddaughter, Erica Herold (and family),Topeka.

Cremation is planned and a private memorial for friends and family will be held on Oct. 23. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Ronald Broun

No public services are planned for Ronald ‘Ron’ Broun, 75, Lawrence, who died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2105, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 30, 1939, in Phillipsburg, Kan., the son of Diran Turner and Winifred Winship Broun. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School, and later earned undergraduate and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Kansas. Ron served as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board for many years. He was deeply knowledgeable about all music, played classical piano and ragtime too, he was a classical music reviewer for the Washington Post for seven years, and amassed a significant collection of LPs and CDs. Ron always followed his beloved Jayhawks.

Survivors include a daughter, Katie Sandhaus and husband Jay, and their four sons, Alex, Andy, Teddy, and Thomas, Atlanta, GA, and his former wife, Elizabeth “Betsy” Broun, of Bethesda, MD .

James Cary ‘Jim’ Brown Jr.

Services were held for James Cary Brown, Jr, 55, Sat, October 24, 2015 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. A Memorial Stone will be placed at Toronto Township Cemetery, Toronto, KS, where his daughters’ family that has preceded in passing are at rest.

Friends and family called him Jim, and he left us to join his creator on Oct 16, 2015. He was loved by many, and will be missed many times more.

He was born February 1, 1960, in Bellflower, CA, the son of James and Mary Brown. He attended school in CA until the age of 11, at which time he moved to Arlington, TX with his father, step mother and 2 sisters, Pam Leary, of Arlington, TX and Cyndi Smith, of Grand Rapids, MI. His mother, Mary and husband, John Sexton moved to Arlington, TX as well, and Jim continued on to Sam Houston High School in Arlington, graduating in 1978.

He was known as a kind and generous soul, and was loved by many. His smile and presence could light up a room, and was a source of encouragement for many, for that he will always be remembered.

He married Lenora Reynard on Jan 14, 1993 in Ft Worth, TX. That union was blessed with a daughter, Siera Naomi, born Nov 3, 1993, and a stepdaughter, Audra Dawn, born Aug 16, 1987. They all survive of the home. They moved to Lawrence in 2000, where Jim was employed at E & E Display Group until it closed, after the closure, he worked as a free lance painter for the rest of his time here in Lawrence.

Other survivors include a sister, Pam Leary, Arlington, TX, another sister, Cyndi Smith, of Grand Rapids, MI. A younger brother Gerald Sexton, Yucca, CA, and a younger sister, Caryn Brown O’Brien of Tuscon, AZ

He was preceded in death by his father, James Cary Brown in 1987, and his mother Mary Brown Sexton in 2012.

William Henry ‘Bill’ Lee

Loving Father and Founding Member and President Emeritus of the Kansas Music Hall of Fame William “Bill” H. Lee, 68, died on October 16, 2015 at his home in Lawrence, Kansas.

Bill was born on December 5, 1946 in Independence, Kansas, the first of Henry Eugene and Clora Ruby (McDaniel) Lee’s three children.

As his father was in the Army, he grew up moving between Kansas, Washington, Missouri and Germany. The vaccination not yet being given in Germany, Bill was hospitalized for more than two weeks in September 1955 when he contracted polio.

After his father died in 1962 the family moved from Waynesville, Missouri back to Neodesha, Kansas, to be near his mother’s family.

Bill graduated from Neodesha High School in 1965.

He attended UCLA for fall 1965.

He served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1966 – 1972, serving on active duty during that time.

Bill attended The University of Kansas from 1967 – 1971, 1975 – 1977 and 1989.

He attended Neosho County Community College, Chanute, Kansas in 1973.

He worked at numerous radio stations from 1968 – 1994, beginning at KKOY and moving on to KGGF, KOAK, KUDL, KLWN/KLZR, KEWI/KMAJ, KRLN/KSTY and KLRQ.

On January 4th, 1973, he married Cynthia “Cindy” Robertson in Miami, Oklahoma. They divorced in 1976.

On August 20, 1977, he married Jeanne Lee Cunningham in Lawrence, Kansas. They divorced in 1989.

In March 1999, he wrote, edited and published, “Kansas Rockers – The First Generation.”

In August 2004, Bill founded the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.

In 2006 Bill’s mother died. She had been living in Canon City, Colorado, where Bill had also lived for a few years prior to that time.

In Lawrence, Kansas on March 6, 2010, Bill was honored by a surprise Kansas Music Hall of Fame special directors induction as KMHOF founder and president.

Bill is survived by his children: Jon Barta (Tammy), Lea (Barta) Morris, Beth (Lee) Tennyson (Michael, Jr.), Dayna Lee (Ben Gibler), Kent Lee, Amanda (Lee) Terrazas (Jaime), Teresa Lee, Mark Lee and Heather Lee, all of Lawrence, Kansas; and Myk Barta of Eudora, Kansas; grandchildren: Timothy Barta, Tia Barta, Anthony Barta, Tyler Barta (Janell), Amanda Morris, Jeanne Morris, Dusty Morris, Grace Goodwin, Darcy Johnson, Michael Tennyson III, William Tennyson, Kansas Gibler, Abby Gibler, Lucy Gibler, Keegan Lee, Kaylan Lee, Kayden Lee, Keyrra Roberts, Christian Miller, Jaime Terrazas, Jr., Malyssa Terrazas, Angelina Terrazas, Kymberly Bernard, Alexandria Bernard, Isabell Bernard, one great-grandchild Huckleberry Barta; his brother Dana Lee, Morgan City, Louisiana and sister Peggy Lee, Canon City, Colorado.

Bill’s body was cremated. There will be a private family event to spread his ashes.

Robert F. Roseberry

Robert Fred Roseberry, 85, Lawrence died Saturday October 17, 2015, at his home.

Robert was born December 23, 1929, in Danville, IL, the son of Ralph Weaver Roseberry and Beulah Elma Nichols Roseberry. In 1952 he graduated from Eastern IL University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Education.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and a certified member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was employed by GE in Danville for eight years and FMC Corp. Phosphorous Chemical Division for 27 years retiring as Human Resources Manager On January 1, 1992.

Robert married Beverly Jane Hodges December 25, 1952. She preceded him in death in 2006.

Survivors include a son Mark R. Roseberry, Lawrence; daughter Lori L. Clark, Lawrence; brother Gene K. Roseberry, Girard, IL; grandchildren, Jared Young, David Clark, Hallie Frager, and a great-granddaughter Astra Young.

Richard H. ‘Dick’ Comer

Services for Richard H. ‘Dick’ Comer, 94, Lawrence, will be 1:30 pm Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Cremation is planned, and a private family inurnment will be conducted. Dick died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Campbell, Mo., the son of John Henry and Ora Pearl McElyea Comer. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and later earned a bachelor’s degree. He taught agriculture at Horton High School, and later was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a soil conservationist. He enjoyed antiquing, auctions, garage sales, fishing, and animals.

He married Barbara Carolyn Cox, and she survives of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Belinda Comer, Lawrence, and Phyllis Rookey, Robertsdale, Ala.; a grandson, Josh Comer, Lawrence; a granddaughter, Ambrosia Turner, Memphis, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews, including Sheila Comer LaFerney, John Comer, and Michael Comer. He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, Wayne Comer, Jettie Comer, Bob Comer, Pete Comer, Carl Comer, and Norman Comer.

Jerome G. ‘Jerry’ Kern

A memorial visitation for Jerome G. ‘Jerry’ Kern, 65, Leavenworth, will be from 6-8 pm Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, Lawrence. Jerry died Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at his home in Leavenworth, after an extended battle with myelodysplasia, a rare blood disorder. He fought the disease with grace.

He was born July 30, 1950, in Leavenworth, to George and Charlotte (Malody) Kern. Jerry worked for many years at Inland Storage in Turner, Kan. as a forklift driver. Later he worked as a painter for several different businesses. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hanging out with friends. He always walked on the wilder side of life. In his later years, his favorite thing to do was hang out at the Missouri River with his buddies

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Jerry Kern Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

A private ceremony will follow at a later date.

Homer T. Welsh

Funeral service for Homer T. Welsh, 90, Eudora, will be 11 am Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 1:30 pm. at Leavenworth National Cemetery. He died Monday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born August 23, 1925, in Douglas County, KS., the son of Alonzo Elmer and Maude Ellen Hildwin Welsh.

Homer attended Lawrence public schools. He worked for Lawrence Construction Co., and then worked for the University of Kansas in the Carpenter Shop where he retired in 1987.

He was a Army Veteran serving during WWII. He was a member of V.F.W. Alford-Clarke Post #852, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post #14, Acacia Lodge #9, A.F. & A.M., and the Carpenters Union. Homer enjoyed gardening, remodeling, and dancing.

He married Velva Arlene Hardister on Feb. 28, 1946, in Olathe. She preceded him in death on Apr. 2, 2001. He married Judy C. Harris in March, 2008, she survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter Pennie (Jim) Scribner of Lawrence, step-daughter Julie (Bobby) Province of Springfield, MO., step-son James (Debbie) Watkins of Carthage, TN., 7 grandkids, 7 great-grandkids, and 2 great-great-grandkids. He was preceded in death by a son Lonnie Welsh, Dec. 12, 2011, and a grandson David Scribner.

Friends may call Wednesday noon to 8 pm. at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 pm.
