Laurin Wilhelm

Laurin Wilhelm died on June 19, 2015 in San Antonio, TX. He was born April 12, 1937 near Jetmore, KS to John George and Leah May (Wagner) Wilhelm.
Laurin graduated from Great Bend H.S in 1955 and the University of Kansas in 1959 with a B.A. in German, followed by a B.S. in Education ’68 and a M.S. in Administration ’70 at KU. After joining the KU NROTC, the U.S. Navy and the Olathe Naval Air Reserve, Laurin retired in 1981 at the rank of Commander.
Laurin was a vice principal and teacher at Central Junior High in Lawrence, from 1968 to 1993. For the past sixty years, he researched his Germans from Russia family genealogy. As an AHSGR life member, he enjoyed translating German and helping researchers at the local, state, national, and international levels.
Laurin married Gracie Ramos on December 25, 1986. The couple retired to San Antonio in 1997.
Laurin will be missed by his wife Gracie and daughter Heather of the home; son Phil, his wife Elizabeth and their children Mary, John, and David of Longmont, CO; son Chris, his wife Tia and their children Gretchen and Matthew of Ketchikan, AK. Laurin was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Lloyd, and sisters Eileen and Darlene.
Laurin’s wishes were to be cremated and have a memorial headstone placed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, KS. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date.

Sandra Sue Ellsworth Lingle

Graveside services for Sandra Sue Lingle, 71, Eudora, will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Fairlawn Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Ms. Lingle died Satuday, June 27, 2015 at Medicalodges in Eudora.

She was born March 25, 1944, in Hutchinson, the daughter of George Franklin Ellsworth and Lucille Francis King Wilcox.

Ms. Lingle worked as a nurse’s aide for Visiting Nurses. She was a member of Mustard Seed Church in Lawrence.

She is survived by daughters, Becky Taylor of Lawrence, Tami Willhite of Valley Falls; sisters, Francis Davies of Hutchinson, Betty Smith of Hutchinson, Linda Whitney of Hutchinson, and Barbara Wade of Broken Bow, OK; grandchildren, Cameron Taylor and wife Sommer of Little Rock, AR, Ashley Qualls and husband Richard of Lawrence, Lacey Farmer of Topeka, Dera Erhart and husband Chris of Valley Falls, William Willhite of Valley Falls; and 2 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, George and Larry Ellsworth.

Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association, sent in care of the funeral home.

Theodore “Ted” Patz Sr

Military graveside services for Mr. Patz, 70, Perry, will be at 12:30 Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS.
Mr. Patz died Thursday, June 25, 2015 in Paola, on his 70th birthday.
He was born in Berwyn, Illinois and grew up there. He entered the US Marine Corps in 1963 and served until 1967; achieving the rank of Corporal. While in the Marines, he was deployed to Vietnam and served one year in the combat zone. His service awards included the National Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one service star, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Mr. Patz was a proud Marine. He was also a lover of animals.
He is survived by a daughter Christina McKown, her husband Cris and their children Alex & Jaycob, son, Theodore “TJ” Patz Jr and his wife Erica and their children Leighanna, Abbygayle, Justin, Travis & Hunter, and son Robert Patz his girlfriend Cheyenna Clouse,the Clouse family, sister, Marie Uher & brother Jerry Patz.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 1st from 6 – 7:30 pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Theodore Patz Sr. Memorial Fund, sent in care of the funeral home.

William E. ‘Bill’ Merkel

A Celebration of Life for William E. ‘Bill’ Merkel, 72 rural Lawrence, will be at 7:00 pm Thursday, July 16, 2015, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with Chaplain Paul Reed of Visiting Nurses officiating. A visitation will follow the service. Bill passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at his home.

He was born April 4, 1943, in Lawrence, the son of Larry and Mildred Harris Merkel. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1961. He served his country as a U. S. Marine. He worked in the auto body and wrecker service business for many years. He was a scuba diver and did underwater recovery. Bill was an avid drag racer and 4-wheeler and built and repaired many 4WD vehicles. In mid-life Bill completely changed careers and became a paramedic and firefighter working for Douglas County Ambulance, Leavenworth County EMS, and the Pottawatomie Tribal Fire Department.

Bill had a wide variety of interests, all of which centered around helping others. He taught CPR classes, avalanche education, fought forest fires in Wyoming and Montana and has been a member of the Snow Creek Ski Patrol for 26 years. Bill was recognized and received his National Appointment to the National Ski Patrol. He was a founding member of the Reno Township Fire Department and served as a Captain and Assistant Fire Chief. Bill helped his wife run the Corral Club many years ago and for the last 20 years assisted her with operating Sundance Emu Ranch.

Bill married Ann North Cripe on January 6, 1980, in Lawrence. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two brothers, Bob Merkel and Jim Robinson, both of Lawrence, two grandchildren, William and Dana, two great grandchildren,
and daughter-in-law, Joan Merkel. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, William Edward Merkel, two brothers, Melvin and Paul Merkel, and one sister, Georgia Jessup.

Willard “Leon” Hattabaugh

Leon Hattabaugh was born in Coal Hill, AR on November 26, 1951. He died June 25, 2015 at Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Angela Hattabaugh-Bley (husband James) Shawnee, a son Christopher Hattabaugh, Lawrence, 2 brothers, Donnie and Kenny, Lawrence; 6 sisters, Wanda Faye Shackelford (husband Lloyd), Linda Kay Hibner (husband Buck), Joyce Anderson (Husband Kenny), Judy Holder (husband Richard), Connie Stroda, all of Lawrence; Kathy Stephens, Iola; and 5 grandchildren (Kiana, Kylee, Eric, Ella, and Mason).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Alma Hattabugh; brothers, Harley, Wayne, and James Hattabaugh; and sister Velma Dean Estes.

Leon found the funny in everything and always brought a smile to your face. It was hard to tell sometimes if he was joking or serious. All who knew him have a fond memory of his sense of humor, his caring heart, and loving nature. He loved to hunt and fish. These times will always be remembered.

Inurnment will be at 11 am Wednesday, July 1 at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10 am to 10:45 am and proceed to the cemetery.

Opal Mae Lebombarb

Graveside services for Opal Mae Lebombarb, 91, Lawrence, will be 11 am Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at Wabaunsee Cemetery, Wabaunsee, KS. She died June 21, 2015, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Opal was born May 13, 1924, in Clifton, KS, the daughter of William H. and Pearl V. (Gingles) Snyder. She graduated from Clay Center High School.

Opal settled in Topeka in 1958, where she owned and operated two cafés until 1970. She then managed and cooked for Lakeview Lodge in Lawrence until 1974, after which she was the house mother for the Delta Delta Delta Sorority at KU until 1976. She later retired from the Lawrence School District as a cook in 1985.

Opal married Arnold Franklin Lebombarb on July 12, 1976, in Miami, OK. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers James Snyder and William K. Snyder; and sisters Donna Snyder and Betty Cornelison.

Survivors include a daughter Sharen and husband, Richard Moews, Lawrence; a son James Colson and wife, Cheryl, Drayden, MD; stepdaughter Carol Hamilton, Topeka; brother, Donald Snyder, Topeka; sister Judy O’Toole, Shawnee; sister-in-law Edna Snyder-Finch, Junction City; eight grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; nineteen great –grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jo A. Lehman

Funeral services for Jo Lehman, 80, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Randy Weinkauf officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Lehman died Monday, June 22, 2015, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 29, 1934, in Coffey County, Kan., the daughter of William Alfred and Alena Williams. She graduated from Burlington High School. Jo was a homemaker, and was a foster parent to dozens of children over 25 years. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and enjoyed cooking and raising her children and foster children.
She married Frederick Lehman on July 13, 1952, in Coffey County. He survives of the home. Other survivors include her children, Michelle Thacker (Rodney), Hays, Andrew Lehman (Brandi), Kansas City, Mo., Jessica Harris (Thomas), Lawrence, and Christopher Umbenhower, Lawrence; a sister, Mary Jane Gunlock, LeRoy, Kan.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Donald Williams, and a sister, Georgia Pryor.

Raymond Edward “Ray” DeRosia

Memorial services for Raymond Edward “Ray” DeRosia Jr., 49, Lawrence, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place.

Ray died Monday, June 22, 2015, at his home, after a valiant and hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born August 1, 1965 at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Raymond Edward and Joan Frances DeRosia Standfield. He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1983.

Ray started his 30 year career with Quaker Oats/Heinz/Del Monte in 1984. He spent fifteen years on 3rd shift, he moved to 2nd shift in 1999. Ray was designated the 2nd Shift Coordinator and really enjoyed taking on a bigger role and worked very hard to make sure his shift performed well. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and his two kittens.

He married Julie Ann Fritz, May 4, 1996 at the Most Pure Heart of Mary in Topeka, Kansas. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a brother, Jerome DeRosia (Sue) of Bellingham, WA; two sisters, Judy Cox (Jeff) of Phoenix, AZ, and Pam Eales (Matt) of Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Marian Percival

Graveside services for Marian (Tuckel) Percival, 97, Lawrence, will be 10 am Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be Wednesday, June 24, 2015, from 6-7 pm at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Mrs. Percival died Friday, June 19, 2015, at her home following a brief illness.

(Anna) Marian (Tuckel) Percival was born June 18, 1918, on a farm in the Belvoir Community northwest of Clinton, Kan., the daughter of William Herman Tuckel and Anna Mary (Zeeb) Tuckel. She was of German descent. Her maternal grandparents George and Katherine (Bahnmaier) Zeeb were some of the first German farmers to settle in the Big Springs and Stull, Kansas area. Her paternal grandparents Herman and Emma (Klaus) Tuckel and their family moved to Lawrence from Germany in 1878. Herman was a tailor located in the 700 block of Mass. St.

Marian attended the Belvoir School, Liberty Memorial High School, and graduated from Lawrence Business College. She was the bookkeeper for Fritzel Jayhawk Creamery in downtown Lawrence for many years. Later she worked with her husband and managed their company, Holton Transport many years. She kept books for 77 years.

She married Melvin E. Percival on July 19, 1951. They raised two children, Myron William Percival and Cheryl Ann Percival. Melvin died March 19, 1999. Her son Myron died in a car accident in 1974.

Marian and Melvin were long time members of Central United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, sister, Wilma (Tuckel) Kampschroder, brothers Alfred and Harry Tuckel, and nephews Kerwin and Lester Tuckel.

Marian is survived by her daughter Cheryl Percival, brother-in-law Ivan Percival, sister-in-law Judy Percival, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Norma “June” Allis

Funeral services for June Allis, 90 Baldwin, will be 11 am Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin City, KS. She died Thursday, June 18, 2015 at her home in Baldwin.
June was born June 16, 1925, near Vinland, Kansas to Estel and Ada Moore. She attended several grade schools around the Baldwin area and finished up at Baldwin High School. She only went three years to High School because her father became ill and she needed to help her mother with the farm work. She and her mother had a very stubborn team of mules to farm with and they didn’t cooperate too well. She worked for the Cook Cleaners for 17 years. June married Cecil Puckett and Earl Davault, both died of cancer. In 1968 she married Donald Allis and lived in Baldwin until 1979 when they finished building their new house on the farm. June worked as a bookkeeper for Farmers Coop Association for 23 years before retiring. She is survived by her husband, one son, Michael Puckett, two daughters, Marilyn Nieder and Janice Harral, a step-son Michael Allis, step-daughter, Charlotte Newkirk, 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
She enjoyed her home, flowers and grandchildren when they needed her. She lived and passed away about four miles from where she was born. June always laughed and said she didn’t get far in this world.
