Betty Luella Otto

Funeral service for Betty Luella Otto, 71, Lawrence, will be 2 pm Saturday, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Otto died Wednesday July 23, 2014, at Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

She was born August 3, 1942, in Lawrence, KS, the daughter of John Neal and Luella Gray Banks. She graduated from Lawrence High School.   Betty worked for KU Alumni for 49 years as a Records Clerk and retired in 2012.

Betty married Ronald Otto on November 4, 2005, at Clearfield Church in Eudora.  He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a sister Reta Banks, Lawrence, KS, a brother John W. Banks, Osage City, KS, four nieces Debra Heath, McLouth, KS, Diana Huseby, Lawrence, KS, Mary Banks, Lawrence, KS, Sharon Watson, Lyndon, KS; and her three boys Ralph, Rex, and Scotty.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Luella Banks, sister in law Margaret Ann Banks, great nephew Nathan L. Hall, and great great nephew Cody Blake McNish.

Friends may call from 8 am until service time on Saturday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 1 until service time.

The family suggests memorials made to the Clearfield Church sent in care of the funeral home P.O. Box 1260, Lawrence, KS 66044.

D. Wayne Parkinson

David Wayne Parkinson, 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Lawrence on Friday, July 18th. Memorial services will be determined at a later date.

Wayne was born on January 7, 1927 in Reynoldsburg Ohio, the son of Rufus David Parkinson and Evelyn Donnelly Parkinson. Wayne grew up in San Francisco, California and graduated from George Washington High School. He received a business degree from the University of California at Berkeley, where he was active with the Kappa Alpha fraternity (!). There he rowed on the varsity men’s rowing team and was an alternate the year Cal won gold at the Olympics in London.

Wayne served on the USS Saginaw Bay, A CVE-82, a Casablanca Class escort carrier, during World War II.

Wayne earned a graduate degree in International Management from Thunderbird, the American Graduate School for International Management, in Glendale Arizona. He was recruited by Standard Oil International, and was sent to Karachi, Pakistan as sales manager where he rowed on the British rowing team. Wayne went on to work for Investors Overseas Services, a mutual fund company based in Geneva, Switzerland. Wayne lived and worked in Bangkok, Thailand and in Jakarta, Indonesia.

After returning to the states, Wayne worked for National ChemSearch and for Transworld Systems.   Wayne has lived Lawrence since 1983. One of his favorite books growing up was Horatio Alger’s Strive and Succeed and this he did all his life. When he retired, he did his best to keep himself busy and working, even when attention was co-opted by his battle with Parkinson’s disease.   Wayne passed on his unbelievable work ethic, sense of humor, and keen business sense to his three children, of whom he was always so very proud.

Wayne married Mary Ely on January 14, 1982, in Kansas City, Missouri. She survives of the home. Other survivors include daughter Kim and her husband Sean, son David, currently in Paraguay, daughter Laura, New York, two grandsons, Quinn, age 11 and Ian, age 6, and sister Norma Grimes, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Patricia Pritchard, and his favorite Aunt Shirley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Lawrence Parkinson’s Support Group in care of Elaine Penny, 2320 Brett Dr. Lawrence, KS 66049.

 

Mary Ruth Scott

Funeral services for Mary Ruth Scott, 86, Lawrence, will be at 11 am Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with Pastor Dave Upchurch officiating, Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Scott died Friday, July 18, 2014, at the home of her daughter in Lawrence.

She was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Franklin County, Va., the daughter of Grover Cleveland and Nanny Elizabeth Eames Perdue. She attended school in Glade Hill, Va. Mary worked as a CNA for Visiting Nurses for 18 years, where she received a Nurse of the Year award. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and provided many troubled teens refuge in her home.

She married Howard B. Scott on March 12, 1950, in South Carolina. He preceded her in death, as two brothers, Claude Perdue and Thomas Perdue, and five sisters, Violet Harper, Sylvia Eames, Rachael Perdue, Martha Perdue, and Earnestine Perdue. Survivors include her children, Michele Mason and husband Richard, Himesville, Ga., Miriam Campbell and husband Michael, Joplin, Mo., Madalon Vann and husband James, Lawrence, Josie Scott, Lawrence, Sheri Birch, Lawrence, Ruby Akin and husband David, Seneca, Mo., Michael Scott, Wichita, and Windell Scott and wife Vickie, Lawrence; two brothers, Alpha Perdue and wife Sumiko, Fayetteville, N.C., and Marvin Perdue and wife Betty, Roanoke, Va.; and 101 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren

Friends may call from noon to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6-7:30 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to Visiting Nurses, or Kids International Ministries, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

Roy L. Clough

Graveside services for Roy Clough, 87, Lawrence, will be at 11 AM Monday at Clinton Cemetery.

Mr. Clough died July 18, 2014 at his home.

He was born April 9, 1927, in Lawrence the son of Richard Leslie & Myrtle Robina Farmer Clough. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1945.He served in the US Army from 1945-1953 as a member of Battery A 758th Field Artillery Battalion, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His final rank was Master Sergeant.

Mr. Clough retired from DuPont after a 26 year career, having never missed a day of work due to illness.

He was President of the Lawrence Flying Club for many years. He also enjoyed boating, gardening, traveling and spending time with his family.

He married Doris Allen on June 13, 1953 in Lawrence. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his children, Nancy Clough Patterson (Mike) of Eudora and Allen Clough (Teresa) of Perry; three grandsons, Jason Clough, Matthew & Dustin Patterson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and three brothers.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from noon – 7 PM where the family will greet them from 6- 7 PM

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Westside Presbyterian Church, Clinton Presbyterian Church or Douglas County Visiting Nurses, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Beverly L. Roberts

Private family inurnment for Beverly L. Roberts, 84, Eudora, Ks.  will be in the Pacific Ocean in Washington State. Mrs. Roberts passed away July 10, 2014 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 6, 1930 in Perry, Ks., the daughter of Cecil Shoemaker and Ruth Rose Shoemaker. She moved to Lawrence as a young girl.
She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School.  She married Leon V. Roberts on May 27, 1949. They lived in Lawrence except for 3 years when they moved to Anacortes, Wa.
He preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 2003.
She was a clerk supervisor at Sunflower Army Ammunition plant for 34 years until she retired.
Survivors include a son, Kirk Roberts, Montrose, Colo; a daughter, Jan Roberts, Eudora; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Humane society in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Dorothy “Dottie” D. Coffman

Surrounded by family members at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Dorothy “Dottie” D. Coffman, 77, of Lawrence, left the struggles of this life to enter into an eternal existence with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on July 11, 2014. Dorothy entered this life on September 3, 1936 in Pittsburg, Kansas, the eldest of five children of Mulford E and Evelyn B (Elston) Gentry. The family moved to Lawrence in the early 1940’s and Dorothy received her education in Lawrence, graduating from Lawrence Memorial High School in 1954. On July 7, 1963, she married Ronald Coffman in Lawrence. Dorothy worked at Hallmark Cards for five years and then elected to be a stay at home Mom. Dorothy was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She volunteered with the PTA at Sunset Hills School for many years. She was a self-taught artist and she created many paintings; she gave painting classes for a period of time. Dorothy’s cheerful and giving attitude was known and appreciated by many.

 She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ronald Coffman, of the home, a son, Jeff, Lawrence, and a daughter, Chris Haupt, Little Rock, Arkansas; two grandsons, Will and Shane Haupt, and one great-grandchild, all of Little Rock, Arkansas. She is also survived by her brother, Gene Gentry (Marge), and by three sisters, Sue Gibbons, Mary Gray, and Janie Daniel (Harold), all of Lawrence.

 Visitation will be at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana Street, Lawrence, on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on July 16, 2014 at the funeral home at 10:00 am with burial services to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

 In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Michael Joseph ‘Mike’ Penner

Funeral services with fire department honors for Michael Joseph ‘Mike’ Penner, 67, Lawrence, will be at 11 am Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Chaplain Paul Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mike died Sunday, July 6, 2014, in Bucksport, Maine, after falling ill while vacationing with his wife.

He was born Apr. 24, 1947, in Newton, Kan., the son of LeRoy and Joanne. He graduated from Newton High School in 1965, where he was the class president. He attended University of Kansas and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University. Mike served the Lawrence Fire Department from 1974 to 1988, and later served the Olathe Fire Department from 1988 to 2000, where he retired as Battalion Chief. He later worked for FEMA from 2008 to 2011. Mike was the executive director of the Class of 1965 Fox Theater Renovation Project in Newton, and was a marathon runner, skier, bird enthusiast, artist, writer, and published poet.

He married Joane Nagel on May 1, 1982, in Lawrence. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Jody Penner, Ottawa; his mother, Joanne Rash Peters, Newton; a sister, Betty Jo Schmidt and husband Richard, Salina; and a niece, Aimee Holgerson and her husband Jeff and daughters Caroline and Grace, Salina.

Hiram A. Salvini

Hiram, 50, passed away peacefully at his home in Lawrence, July 4, 2014 after a 5 year battle with ALS. Hiram was born July 31, 1963 in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High in 1981. He received an Associate of Arts degree in 1983 from Haskell Indian Nations University. Hiram was a proud member of the Northern Paiute Tribe of Nevada. Hiram married his junior high sweetheart, Missy, October 17, 1981. They spent almost 37 years together, and had 4 beautiful children.

Hiram was a successful business owner, and with Missy by his side, ran FormGraphics, Inc, a local printing company, for over 23 years.

He was an avid bicyclist, and was a member of several teams and clubs throughout his cycling career, including Sunflower/LBC, Free State Racing and Lawrence Mountain Bike Club. He competed in road race events as a Category 3 or Masters and as an Expert when competing in mountain bike, regularly winning or placing in regional races. He was a fixture at the weekly group rides, formidable at pushing the pace, yet one of the most likeable and helpful guys in the peloton. The loss of his huge presence in the tight knit bicycling community will be deeply felt by all.

Hiram was also a vintage auto enthusiast, developing his love of cars early in life while spending time with his father, Ira, at the Haskell Junior College auto shop, where Ira was an instructor.

Hiram leaves behind his wife of over 32 years, Missy, 4 children, Lauren Salvini, Brandon Salvini, Maggie Salvini and Emma Salvini, parents, Ira Salvini and Barbara Salvini, sister Tonia Salvini, all of Lawrence, brother Ira Salvini II (wife, Lynn) of Desoto, KS,  and a half-sister Ann Lamy, Lakeland, FL. mother in law, Judith Crossfield, father in law, Art Sommer (wife Verma),  brother in law, Kevin Sommer, sister in law, Laurie Sommer, all of Lawrence,  and nieces, nephew and cousins.

Hiram’s best days were those spent with his kids, riding bikes, swimming, playing games, (where he usually cheated!) shopping, and just being an all-around amazing dad.

A   celebration of Hiram’s life will be held Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N 2nd St, Lawrence, from 6pm – 9pm.
