Sharon Lynn Chaney

Funeral services for Sharon Lynn Chaney, 70, Lawrence, will be at 11 am Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Norwood officiating. Burial will follow in Underwood Cemetery near Williamstown. Mrs. Chaney died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at her home.

She was born Nov. 29, 1942, in Lawrence, the daughter of Worthy Ray Rogers and Ina Bernice Tobler Rogers. She graduated from Lawrence High School, and was an administrative assistant for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine for many years. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, and enjoyed quilting and needlepoint.

She married Donald Lee Chaney on Jan. 5, 1962, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death on Apr. 25, 2010. Survivors include three sons, Mark Allen Chaney, Michael Donnell Chaney, and Rodney Jay Chaney, all of Lawrence; her father, Worthy Rogers, Lawrence; a brother, Worthy (Wayne) Rogers, Lawrence; two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Judy Ann Metcalf

Judy Ann Metcalf, 69, passed away Thursday evening, November 7th, 2013, in Lawrence, KS surrounded by her loving family.

Judy was born on March 1, 1944, in Ottumwa, IA to Emery and Phyllis Humphrey. She spent her grade school years in Pine River MN. Her family then moved to Mullen, Nebraska where she graduated from high school. She received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Nebraska in 1970.

She taught in Nebraska and in various schools on the east coast, completing her teaching career in Fairfax County Virginia. After retiring she pioneered new teaching methods in Educational Kinesiology and Brain Gym. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, participating in her cohousing community and she will be missed by many.

A celebration of her life will be held at the 7:00 PM on 11/24/13 at Delaware Commons, 1218 Delaware St. in Lawrence, KS.

She is survived by her two sons, Pete Boyer (Mona Russell), Will Boyer (Darla). Grandchildren Hailey, Jasmine, Avery and Drewe Boyer. Brother Gary (Joyce) Humphrey and Sisters Carol (Larry) Pearson, Leiloni (Mike) Young, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by parents Emery & Phyllis Humphrey, nephew Mark Humphrey, both sets of grandparents, and a cousin.

Robert J. Garcia

Funeral services for Robert J. Garcia, 75, Lenexa, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be Sunday, November 10, 2013, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Mr. Garcia died Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri.

He was born November 29, 1937, in St. John, Kansas, the son of Salvador and Mary Alexandria Hernandez Garcia.

Mr. Garcia served in the United States Navy. He worked for Santa Fe and later was a printer for Phillips Electronics.

He married Vonda Bottom in 1967. She died December 16, 1978. He married JoAnn Bougher on July 24, 1981. She died November 5, 2010.

Survivors include daughters, Kay Rice & husband Stan, Lenexa KS, Kathy Garcia & husband Michael, Lawrence KS, Debra Beckham & husband Mike, Knoxville, TN, Dean McGaha, Knoxville TN, 9 grandchildren: Rachel, Nathan, Lauren, Jonathan, Robert, Jeff, Michael, Rachel, & Makayla, and 3 great grandchildren Halle, Raegan & Jacob.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Salvador & Alexandria Garcia, his siblings Fidel, Mary, Carol & Manuel, son Alan & daughter Susan.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Harold Leroy Lutz

Graveside services for Harold Lutz, 91, Lawrence will be at 11 AM Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Lutz died Thursday, October 31, 2013, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 3, 1922, in Berryton, Kansas, the son of Roy and Gertrude Hubener Lutz. He grew up in Topeka. He married Athalie “Peggy” Ryan on May 10, 1945 in Linden, KS. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his children, Janice Roseberry, Connie Quinn and husband Mel, Sandy Ratzloff and husband Keith, Jerry Lutz and wife Suzanne, Gayle Lutz and wife Cindy, a sister Leta Kilgore and husband George, 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and a daughter, Beverly Campbell.

Mr. Lutz loved farming and raising his cattle and also enjoyed gardening and all outside activities. After working for Federal Crop and selling Moormans Feeds for several years he took a few trips to Colorado to go deer hunting.

His family will greet friends Saturday, November 2nd from 4 PM – 6 PM, at the funeral home. He will also lie in state Sunday, November 3rd from noon- 8 PM

Virginia L. McGee

Funeral services for Virginia Lee McGee, 89, Eudora, will be 11 am Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Eudora City Cemetery. Mrs. McGee died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 29, 1924, in Johnson Co., Kansas, the daughter of George and Roma Mills Austill. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School, and worked in final assembly at Boeing Aircraft. She later worked in food service for the Eudora School District for 20 years. She volunteered at Medicalodges – Eudora and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed gardening, genealogy, archery, and seamstress work.

She married Thomas S. McGee on June 6, 1942, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 2013, as did her parents, and a brother, Cecil Austill.

Survivors include a son, Michael McGee, Baldwin City; two daughters, Carol Roper Clark, Mountain View, Ark., and Roma Tesch and husband Jim, Overbrook; 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

Friends may call from 8 am to 8 pm Friday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 10 am until service time Saturday. The casket will remain closed.

Jesse Jacob Athey Jr.

Funeral service for Jesse Jacob Athey Jr., 81, Midwest City, OK, will be 2 pm, Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Overbrook Cemetery.

Mr. Athey died Monday, October 28, 2013, at Sienna Extended Care and Rehab Center, in Midwest City, OK.

He was born May 18, 1932, in Lakeview, KS, the son of Jesse Sr. and Erma Desque Athey.

Mr. Athey enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War.

He married Bonnie Grammer on Feb 28th, 1958 in Lawrence KS. She preceded him in death in 2008. They were happily married for 50 years.

Survivors include three children; Bonnita Ann and husband John Albert Disch Jr., Oklahoma City, OK, Jeffery Scott and wife Jeanette L. Athey, Oklahoma City, OK , Anthony O’Neal and wife Jo Lynn Athey, Sapulpa, OK. three grandchildren; Timothy Scott and wife Sara E. Athey, Shannon Victoria Disch, John Albert Disch Jr., all of Oklahoma, OK, three great grandchildren; Charity Rose Athey, Josiah David Athey, John Albert Disch Jr.’s son, Liam. Timothy and Sara are expecting another baby in Jan 2014..

He is preceded in death by his wife Bonnie, his parents; Jesse Sr. and Erma Athey, two brothers; Ed and Don.

Travis Morgan Sanders

A Celebration of Life for Travis Morgan Sanders, 23, Lawrence, will be at 10 am Friday at Lawrence Free Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bob Leiste officiating. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Travis died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, in Osage County, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born June 4, 1990, in Lawrence, the son of Richard Morgan Jr. and Regina W. Waters Sanders. He graduated from Lawrence High School, where he played football and baseball. He later attended Pratt Community College, where he played baseball, and graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor’s degree in health promotions. He worked as an intern strength coach for the Dodgers and Pirates minor league clubs before being employed by the Lawrence School District as a paraprofessional at South Middle School. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his parents, Lawrence; a sister, Allison Carnagie and husband Brent, Eudora; paternal grandparents Richard Morgan Sr. and Wanda Westbrook Sanders, Kaufman, Tex.; nephews Houstyn and Myric Carnagie; and his girlfriend, Hannah Carlson.

Neual Ernest “Ernie” Housworth

Funeral service for Neual Ernest “Ernie” Housworth, 66, Lawrence, will be 2 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2013, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Mr. Housworth died Mon., Oct. 28, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born January 11, 1947, in Leavenworth, the son of Neual and Emma Wolfe Housworth. He graduated from Lawrence High School.

Mr. Housworth was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and served in the Vietnam War and Korean DMZ.. When he returned home he worked in construction and his own band for several years. He moved into transportation and was the general manager at the Lawrence Bus Company. Later he drove for the “T” and KU On Wheels. He retired in 2009.

He married Inge M. Turner on January 29, 1966, at the First Christian Church, Lawrence, KS. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his mother, Emma Marie Housworth, Eudora; Sister, Dorothy Sarlls & husband Gene, Eudora; many loved nieces and nephews, brother in-laws and sister in-laws.

The family suggests memorials made to the Disabled American Veterans Association, American Lung Association, American Diabetes Foundation, or the Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of the funeral home.

Clyde “Raymond” Hoover

Services for Clyde “Raymond” Hoover, 93, Lawrence, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Washington Creek Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in Washington Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Hoover died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Baldwin Health Care & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born October 7, 1920, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the son of Clyde Benjamin and Veva Helene Schweikhardt Hoover. He grew up in the Washington Creek community and attended Weybright Elementary School #4 and Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence.

Mr. Hoover worked as a farmer. He was a member of Washington Creek Church of the Brethren.

He married Martha Alyce Lyle, October 8, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She died in 1981. He married Lea Kletchka, February 7, 1982 in Lawrence, Kansas. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include sons, Clyde Hoover of Lawrence, Lyle Hoover of Tulsa, OK, Richard Hoover of Perry, KS; daughters, Charlene Dearing of Overland Park, KS, Phyllis Rae Hoover of Lawrence, KS, Pamela Sue Hoover of Omaha, NE; step daughters, Anne Kirchner of McPherson, KS, Rebecca Diann Hilt; step son, John Kletchka of Amarillo, TX; brother, Paul W. Hoover of Jefferson, NC; sisters, Delma Jean Jensen of Lawrence, KS, Eunice Nadine Osban of Gulf Breeze, FL; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; and son, Steven Hoover in 2012.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Deon Ambler Willits

A memorial visitation for Deon Ambler Willits, 50, Venice Beach, Calif., formerly of Lawrence, will be from 6-7:30 pm Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory. Deon died Sept. 17, 2013, in Venice Beach.

He was born July 3, 1963, in Lawrence, the son of Jack and Barbara Ambler Willits. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1981, and worked many years as a plumber in the Lawrence area.

Deon was a devoted KC Chiefs fan, and enjoyed camping at area lakes with his children.

Survivors include his daughter, Makayla Willits, McLouth; his son, Jakob Willits, Oskaloosa; his mother, Barbara Willits, Lawrence; a brother, John Willits, Lawrence; two sisters, Cheryl Spencer and Kim O’Bryon, both of Lawrence; and a grandmother, Virginia Ambler, Eudora. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack, a brother, Shannon, and a nephew, Jack.
