Samuel F. ‘Sam’ Crawford Sr.

Memorial services for Sam Crawford Sr., 90, Eudora, will be at 10 am Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with the Rev. Glenn Weld officiating, Inurnment will follow at Eudora City Cemetery. Mr. Crawford died Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at Wellsville Retirement Center.

He was born Jan. 16, 1927, in Eudora, the son of John N. and Georgia Bryant Crawford. He graduated from Eudora High School and later served in the Army of the United States attaining the rank of Corporal and earning a Victory Medal and Army of Occupational Medal Germany. Sam worked as a construction superintendent in the Kansas City area for 45 years. He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union. In his free time, Sam enjoyed fishing, KU basketball games, and bird hunting.

He married Susan Raybern on Sept. 6, 1952, in Eudora. She survives of the home, Other survivors include three children, Sam Crawford Jr., Eudora, Linda Abel and husband Danny, Eudora, and Richard Crawford and wife Cathy, Great Falls, Mont.; five grandchildren, Wesley, William, Eric, Audrey, and John; and seven great grandchildren, Brooke, Kyle, Raegan, Kaylee, Colton, Kate, and Samuel. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and William Crawford.

Allan Conrad Pippert

Allan Conrad Pippert, 65, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka, Kansas after a brief, but valiant battle under hospice care.

He was born at Lawrence Memorial Hospital during the ‘51 flood on July 10th.  He was the oldest of four children born to Albert and Betty Pippert.  As a child he grew up on a farm north of Midland Junction and attended Lawrence Public Schools, where he later graduated from Lawrence High in 1969.

His passion for airplanes led him to join the United States Air Force where he was honorably discharged but continued his passion by joining the Air Force Reserves.  He attended NCK Technical School in Beloit, school for Heavy Equipment Operators.  He worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator which he had a passion for as well as being a truck driver.

Allan was a member of The Wheelsport Motorcycle Club.  Allan was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed reading about airplanes, World War II and science fiction.

He later married Cindy Caleb on October 22, 1982 in Topeka, Kansas. They would have celebrated 35 years later this year.  During this union they had a son, Joel, who preceded him in death as well as a daughter, Jessica.

Allan was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Betty Pippert.

Survivors include wife Cindy; daughter Jessica (Derrick); brothers Bill (Terri) all of Lawrence, Daren of Eudora; sister  Denise Willits (Richard) of Netawaka; 3 grandchildren Kylyn, Trenton, Kaitlyn, many aunts, cousins and their families.

The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 7 pm on Friday evening.  Services will be held Saturday June 24, 2017 at 10 am at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence, Kansas.  Burial will immediately follow at Sutton Cemetery in Baldwin Junction.

Mary Lou Vaughan

Memorial services for Mary Lou Vaughan, 71, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.

Mrs. Vaughan died June 19, 2017, at her home.

Mary was the fourth child born to Mark and Kathleen Maas May 22, 1946 in Dubuque, IA. She attended The Academy of The Visitation High School of Dubuque and her sophomore year at the high school in Key West, FL. After graduation, she attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, IA. earning the degree of LPN. After nurses training, she and Larry Spoon married and had a daughter, Jennifer Spoon in 1967. Mary worked in nursing in the OR at Cedar Rapids and Dubuque and they moved to Lawrence, KS in 1978. She continued in the nursing field in a Lawrence day care center and two Topeka elementary schools through 1995.

Mary and Robert Vaughan were married at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence in 1984. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, camping at Clinton Lake, fishing, tandem bicycling, day trips, reading, and vacationing at rivers, lakes, and the ocean at North Padre Island, TX.

Robert and Jennifer survive at home. Other family includes Matt and Amy Vaughan with two sons in Prairie Village, KS, and Alex and Janel Vaughan with a daughter and son in Phoenix, AZ. She is also survived by her brother, Dale Maas and his wife Karen of Topeka along with cousins, nieces and nephews. Sisters Nadine Kieffer and Joan Hoffman preceded her in death.

Beverly A. Gist

Funeral service for Beverly A. Gist, 74, Lawrence, will be 10 am Friday, June 23, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Reverend William A. Dulin will officiate. Mrs. Gist died Friday, June 16, at Brandon Woods. She was born June 11, 1943 in Lawrence, the daughter of William F. and Doris June Crane.

She was a homemaker. She worked as a babysitter, and South Junior High in food service for several years. She was a member of V.F.W. Alford-Clarke #852, and the Centennial Grange, where she and her husband  were named the “Kansas State Young Couple of Grange” in 1975.

She married Willis Homer Gist on July 6, 1962 in Lawrence. He preceded her in death on March 15, 2008. Other survivors include two daughters, Shelly Lauber, Topeka, and Linda Bascom, Fort Worth, TX; two sons, Mark Gist, Meriden, and Lee Bouchard, Olatha; two brothers, Robert C. (Patsy) Crane of Colorado Springs, CO, and Sheldon (Debbie) Crane of Bennington; 7 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

She will lay in state Thursday noon to 8 pm. The family will receive friends Friday from 9 am to service time at the funeral home.

Mary E. Wilson

Funeral service for Mary E. Wilson, 62, Perry, will be 10 am. Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Cross Roads Cowboy Church, Perry, KS. Burial will follow at Buster Cemetery. Pastor Terry Newell will officiate. Mary died Tuesday at her home. She was born April 21, 1955 in Parsons, the daughter of Chester Lee and Mary Holden Erskin.

Mary worked for King Radio for several years and was a homemaker. She was a member of Cross Roads Cowboy Church.

She married Thomas B. Wilson Sr., they were married for 45 years. He survives of the home. Other survivors include a son Spank (Rhonda) Wilson of Winchester, daughters Brandy Wilson, Kiley Wilson both of Lawrence, brother Tommy Erskin of Eudora, grandchildren Sophia, Jasper, and Victoria Wilson.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8:00 pm at Cross Roads Cowboy Church.

Mary Alice Patterson


Graveside services for Mary Alice Patterson, 94, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery, with Pastor Gary Myer officiating.

Mrs. Patterson died Monday, June 12, 2017, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed gardening, reading, and running errands.

Survivors include her son, John P. Patterson, Lawrence.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Patterson Sr., and children Sharon Downing, Fred Patterson Jr., and Patricia Jaimez.

Georgia Lee Thomas

Funeral services for Georgia Lee (Bailey) Thomas, 84, Lawrence, will be 11 am, Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Vinland United Methodist Church, Baldwin City, KS. Visitation from 6 to 7pm Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Georgia died peacefully in her sleep on June 9, 2017, at her home with family.  She was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1933, in Ft. Scott (Bourbon County), KS, the daughter of Kenneth Bailey and Pauline.  On March 11, 1951, she married Keith LeRoy Thomas. They shared almost 66 years together when Keith passed at the beginning of this year. Shortly after getting married, she graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1951. Georgia became a Pastors Wife not long after graduating; she and her husband ministered to three Churches. When her husband joined the army she started working at a laundry and dry cleaners, wherever he was stationed. She did like to travel, and took the family to Pike’s Peak, the Grand Canyon, and Disney World in California, just to name a few. In 1957-58, Georgia and Keith settled in Lawrence, KS where she took a job at Scotch Cleaners. Georgia still worked at Scotch when she retired approximately 10 yrs ago. She loved all of God’s creatures in general, but held a special fondness for birds, especially Hummingbirds, dogs, cats, chickens, and Butterflies. Georgia’s hobbies included baking, feeding the birds, working in her flower beds and vegetable garden. She had the cleanest house this side of the Mississippi. She always had a kind word for everyone. Never met a bowl of ice cream she couldn’t conquer. She loved cookies, but Double Stuffed Oreos were her favorite. She would eat Italian and Mexican food every day if she could. Last of all, Georgia was always ready for a Strawberry Cheesecake Shake from Sonic. Georgia, you will be greatly missed.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth and Pauline Bailey, brothers Earl, Howard, Glenn, Wes, and Lloyd Bailey. Her sisters Lena (Bailey) Brillhart and Mildred (Bailey) Puckett. A granddaughter Heather Burke and great-granddaughter Gabriella Thomas.

Survivors include her son Dwayne K. (Elisa) Thomas of Lawrence, KS, daughter Debra L. (Bruce) Harrison of Louisville, MS, 7 Grandchildren, Daniel D. (Kristine) Thomas, Lawrence, David A. (Leah) Thomas, Lawrence, Michael S. (Jackie) Thomas, Lawrence, Cary L. Smith, Lawrence, Seth A. Thomas, Kansas City, MO, Jennifer and Heather Burke, Salina, KS. Georgia also had 12 Great Grandchildren.

Douglas Brent Nairn

Memorial services for Douglas Brent (Doug) Nairn, 65, Lawrence, will be 11 am, Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.  Inurnment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Doug died Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Bridge Haven at Alvamar, in Lawrence, Kansas.

He was born March 5, 1952, the son of Nolen Gene and Earlene Marie Kiger Nairn. Doug graduated from Great Bend High School and later attended classes at Barton County Community College.

He moved to Lawrence in 1976 to open and manage Bailly’s Farm Supply (now Orscheln Farm & Home). In 1985, Doug went to work for Freeman Used Furniture, which was then owned by his in-laws Loren and Marjorie Freeman. Finding great joy in meeting new people, he and his wife purchased the business in 1988. For over twenty years he continued to build the business before ultimately closing the store and retiring in 2008.  Doug was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in early 2010.

Doug married Sheree Rene’ Freeman on January 7, 1978, in Lawrence, Kansas.  She survives of the home, along with his daughter Melissa Cox (Nick) Maryland Heights, MO, and two sons, Shawn and Ryan, both of Lawrence. He also leaves 4 incredible grandchildren:  Elena and Abigail of Maryland Heights, Cambrynn and AvaLee of Lawrence.  He will be missed by his sister Cathi Conaway (Chuck), brother Clay (Lisa), and 6 nieces & nephews: Brandon, Bret, Dallas, Dakota, Bailey & Jake. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends can stop by Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home from noon to 8 pm Friday, June 16th, 2017. A visitation, with the family present, will take place from 7pm to 8 pm. R. Mabel Heinrich Hagerman

Funeral Mass for R. Mabel Heinrich Hagerman, 97, Lawrence, will be at 2:30 pm Monday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with Fr. Mick Mulvany officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence, Kansas.

She died Friday, June 9, 2017, at her home.

Mrs. Hagerman was born May 22, 1920. She lived all her life in Douglas County. She married Louis W. Heinrich on May 3, 1941. He died December 25, 1983. She later married Aubrey Hagerman on Sept. 26, 1987. He died Feb. 6, 2000.

She was a member of Corpus Christi Women’s Guild, the Autumn Club, and Friendship Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Provo, Lawrence; a son, Carl Heinrich (Debbie), Vinland; six grandsons, two granddaughters, 20 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. A daughter, Edith Marie Peterson preceded her in death.

A Rosary will be said at 6:30 pm Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, and a visitation will follow until 8 pm.
