Betty A. Logan-Jones

Funeral services for Betty A. Logan-Jones, 72, Topeka, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Delmar A. White officiating. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Mrs. Logan-Jones died Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at her home in Topeka.

She was born August 2, 1939, in Lawrence, the daughter of Ernest and Aurora DeMoss Logan.

She attended Lawrence public schools and in 1972 received her L.P.N. in Nursing from Weber State, Utah. She worked for Veterans Administration Hospitals in Utah, Philadelphia, and retired from Colmery-O’Neil Veterans Medical Center in Topeka after more than 30 years. She had also worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone for several years.

She married Thomas A. Jones. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Ernest Logan Jr., and a sister, Edna Rice.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl A. and husband Myron Thomas of Chicago, sister Janice L. Logan-Armstrong of Topeka, 2 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, uncles, Sam and wife Carrie Logan of Lawrence, Robert and wife Elaine Logan of Moreno Valley, CA, Leroy and wife Mazie Logan of San Diego, CA, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Samuel D. Villeareal

Samuel D. Villeareal, 57, Lawrence, passed away peacefully at his home, Wednesday, October 26, 2011 with his wife at his side under the care of Grace Hospice of Topeka. He was born in Olton, Texas to Samuel Villarreal and Antonia Davila on August 29, 1954.

Visitation will be held at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence, Kansas from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Free Methodist Church in Lawrence, Kansas. Graveside service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas. Immediately following the graveside service we will gather at the Free Methodist Church for a potluck lunch and fellowship. Bring your best “Sammy” stories to share.

Sam married Enedina (Nina) Martinez June 25, 1988 in Lawrence. He brought into the marriage two children from a previous marriage, she a son and together had two additional children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, three brothers and one sister.

Sam is survived by his wife of 23 years, three sons; Samuel Villeareal III, Ramon Martinez and David Villeareal, two daughters; Kristie Villeareal and Raquel Villeareal; two grandsons; Andres Martinez and Carter Rush, all of Lawrence, Kansas. He is also survived by four brothers; Hector Gonzales, Dimmitt, TX; Armando Davila, San Angelo, TX and Adrian Villarreal, Haskell, TX; Antonio Requena, Chino Hills, CA; four sisters; Albarina Castillo, Pomona, CA; Crisanta Fulkerson, Corona, CA; Oralia Martinez, Haskell, TX and Alicia Villarreal, Abilene, TX.

Sam was honorably discharged from the Kansas Army National Guard in 1994, having served 13 years. He lived in Lawrence these last 26 years, worked as a framing carpenter, a cook, a welder and an insurance agent.

Being the ultimate Chiefs fan, he loved all things Chiefs. Regardless of whether they had a winning season or not, Sam supported and rooted for the Chiefs. His favorite saying was “Chiefs all the way, baby.” You couldn’t go wrong with gifts, so long as it was Chiefs related. Other interests were barbecuing, golfing, spending time with his friends, watching action movies, reading books, watching Chiefs football, KU basketball and the KC Royals.

He loved his family and friends. He was proud of his children and always remembered to pray for them. He loved with all his heart, had a wonderful smile, his eyes sparkled and his laugh filled you up. He was a wonderful husband, father, Son, grandfather cousin, and friend. We will miss him.

Robert E. “Bob” Chamberlin

Funeral services for Robert E. “Bob” Chamberlin, 83, rural Baldwin City, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Worden United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Clinton Cemetery, Clinton.

Mr. Chamberlin died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at his home.

He was born Oct. 28, 1927, in Topeka, the son of Walter F. and Gladys N. Swearingen Chamberlin. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1947.

Mr. Chamberlin worked as a licensed land surveyor for the City of Lawrence. He later was a partner in Young & Brockway Engineering and Switzer & Chamberlin before retiring in 1992 as Public Works Director for Franklin County. He also farmed and raised registered Hampshire and Yorkshire hogs, and was the Swine Superintendent at the Douglas County Fair for many years. He was a member of Clinton Presbyterian Church, and the Kansas Society of Land Surveyors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, woodworking, and his beloved schnauzer, Misty.

He married Mary Ann Herschell on Nov. 26, 1949, in Topeka. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three sons, James and wife Rhonda, Quenemo, John and wife Yolanda, Overland Park, and Dean and wife Saleena, Ft. Hood, Tex.; three daughters, Nancy Cronn and husband Charles, Lyndon, Peggy Barden and husband Bob, De Pere, Wisc., and Shirley McElhenie and husband Patrick, Sauk City, Wisc.; two step sisters, Ardis Pipkin, St. Charles, Mo., and Lois Myrick, Topeka; 21 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 2 step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a step brother, Leon Talbott, a step sister, Donna Talty, and a granddaughter.

Ted Mosby Thomas

Inurnment services for Ted Mosby Thomas, 81, Linwood, will be 3 p.m. Thursday October 13, 2011, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence. Mr. Thomas died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Ted was an avid reader and craftsman. His talents ranged from his early days in the darkroom, doing black and white photography, to the digital age, where he enjoyed photographing nature. He was an exceptionally skilled woodworker, and exhibited and sold his art in the Phoenix Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas, and at the Best of Kansas City on the Country Club Plaza and Crown Center. He created beautifully crafted boxes for jewelry and collectibles, and did custom woodwork for many of the artists and for the gallery. Ted’s engineering background, working for General Dynamics on the Atlas missile program in the early 1960’s, complemented his artistic skills and allowed him to create innovative and unusual designs. Despite traveling extensively during his Navy days and his working years, he was a country boy at heart, and loved living outside of Lawrence, on a small 5-acre property with his wife, Alice. Ted loved animals of all kinds, starting with the horses and dogs of his childhood, to the cats who kept him company in his woodshop.
We all will sorely miss him.

LoRene K. Jensen

Inurnment services for LoRene K. Jensen, 93, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Jensen died Saturday October 8, 2011, at her home.

She was born April 6, 1918, in Perry, OK, the daughter of Otto and Effie Brewer Hirschman. She attended school in Perry. After school she became a Nurses Aide.

She met Charles Edwin Jensen while working at a Hospital in Halsted. They married Oct. 6, 1957 in Perry, OK. He proceeded her in death on June 13, 1979.

She was a member of the Rebecca’s and the United Methodist Church. In her free time she enjoyed traveling and bowling.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Jensen and wife Deena, Baldwin City, and Kevin Jensen and wife Gerie, Alabaster, AL; three grandchildren, Hollie Masten and husband Robert, Oak Grove, MO., Samantha Melton and husband Adam, Lawrence, KS., Britteny Holloway, Alabaster, AL. and two great-grandchildren; Kayla and Autumn.

The family suggests memorials be sent to Grace Hospice, sent in care of the funeral home.

Preston Lee Scheibler

Funeral services for Preston Lee Scheibler, 21, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lawrence Free Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nate Rovenstine officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Preston died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, in rural Douglas County, from injuries sustained in an ATV accident.

He was born Nov. 16, 1989, in Salina, the son of Ty B. and Mistie J. Copas Scheibler. He was a 2008 graduate of Lawrence High School, and later attended Highland Community College on a baseball scholarship. He also attended Johnson County Community College.

Preston was employed by Assist, LLC as an attendant care provider, and recently cared for Jared Axman. He enjoyed volunteering for the Community Transition Program which assists those with special needs. He attended Lawrence Wesleyan Church, and excelled at baseball, basketball, golf, video games, and loving life.

Survivors include his father, Ty Scheibler and wife Amy, Lawrence; his mother, Mistie Copas-Thomas and husband Steve, Lawrence; his sister, Alexis Scheibler, Lawrence; his maternal grandparents, Bill and LaVonne Copas, Bennington, Kan., his paternal grandmother, Barbara Scheibler, Bennington; his step-maternal grandparents, Steve and Sherry Thomas, Topeka; and step-paternal grandparents, Tom and Carol Cole, Shell Knob, Mo., and Judy and W.L. Alexander, Lawrence

Ida Mae Baumgart Driscoll

Graveside service for Ida Mae Baumgart Driscoll, 92, Lawrence, will be at 11am Tuesday at Hardy Oak Cemetery in rural Jefferson County.

Mrs. Driscoll died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

She was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Wynne, Ark., the daughter of Mack A. and Louise Haberling Pratt. She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1937.

Mrs. Driscoll was employed in food service at Kansas University for 21 years, and retired in 1983.

She married Raymond Baumgart on Apr. 2, 1938. He preceded her in death in 1966. She then married Francis Driscoll in Mar., 1973. They later divorced.

Survivors include a son, Raymond “Max” Baumgart, Oskaloosa; a daughter, Wanda Buck, Lawrence; and several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Chris King, a brother A. J. Pratt, a sister, Wanda Schlup, and a grandson, Max Baumgart.

Kenneth D. Laughlin

No public services are planned for Kenneth D. Laughlin, 83, Lawrence. Private inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Laughlin died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at his home.

He was born Apr. 24, 1928, in Lawrence, the son of Woodie and Freda M. Bereiter Laughlin. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School, and later served in the United States Marine Corps.

Mr. Laughlin was employed in maintenance at Farmland Industries, and retired from there after more than 30 years of service. He enjoyed baseball.

He married Barbara Mae Morris on Dec. 8, 1953, in Omaha, Neb. She preceded him in death on June 28, 1993. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Laughlin.

Survivors include a son, Vernon Laughlin, Lawrence; two daughters, Shelia Pearson, San Antonio, Tex., and Sheryl Olson and husband Ed, San Antonio; a brother, Clinton Laughlin, Florida; a sister, Jo Ann Longfellow, Colorado; and a granddaughter, Lara Grammer.
