Linda Johnson

Private family services for Linda Johnson, 75, Lawrence, will be held at a later date.

Ms. Johnson died November 4, 2021, at her home.

She was born September 9, 1946 in Iola, Wisconsin, the daughter of Donald Edwin and Delores Virginia Bestul.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and an artist.  She enjoyed crafting.

She is survived by daughters, Zoanne Julian of Lawrence and Heather Johnson of Boise, Idaho; a son, Scott Hough of Lawrence; grandchildren, Raechelle Halorian, Alexander Hough, Dylan Graham, Zoella Julian, and Eilyskye Julian; and a great grandchild, Kayden Halorian.

 

 

Charles Michael “Mike” Tarczynski

Memorial services for Charles Michael “Mike” Tarczynski, 75, Baldwin City, will be 10:00am, Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Mr. Tarczynski died Thursday, November 4, 2021 at The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus in Topeka, Kansas.

He was born June 3, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Chester John and Sophie Rosol Tarczynski. He graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 1964.

Mr. Tarczynski served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam war and worked as a truck driver. He enjoyed tinkering, shopping, traveling, playing bingo, and spending time in his garage.

He married Marilyn “Diane” Whetstine on June 17, 1967 at the St. Theodore Church in Westland, Michigan.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Ronald Michael Tarczynski and wife Jodi of Burleson, Texas; daughter, Shawn Marie Oprisiu and husband Brian of Baldwin City, Kansas; sister, Shirley Whestine of Canton, Michigan; brother, Chester John Tarczynski Jr. of Novi, Michigan; grandchildren, Genovanni, Dakota, Melinda, Brittany, Marissa, and Courtney.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Diabetes Association, sent in care of the funeral home.

Raymond ‘Boyd’ Schell

Raymond Boyd Schell of Lawrence, KS died Monday, November 1st, 2021, at 85 years of age.

He was born December 29th, 1935 in Alton, MO. He was the son of Lorin Elwin Schell and Lillie Mae Schell and grew up in West Plains, MO, where he attended high school in Thomasville,  MO.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1964, during the Korean War which he was deployed from 1959 to 1960. He was discharged with a rank of SP5 E5 with an award for marksman (carbine).

Most people remember him as Boyd Schell, sole  proprietor of Lawrence Window Cleaning from 1960 until 2019. He had numerous photographs and stories written about him over his many years of washing windows on Massachusetts Street and all over the city in the Lawrence-Journal World.

He married Dianna Dean Helm on September 3rd, 1956 in Miami, OK. She died on September 21, 2017. They were devoted to each other for 61 years at the time of her death.

He is survived by his daughters, Christa Rene Sharpsteen and Robin Rae Bayless; two grandchildren, Whitney Renea Dilegge and Raymond Douglas Butler; and one great grandchild, Ty Beau Dilegge.

He was the youngest of 7 children. He is survived by his sister, Jenny Pitcock of West Plains, MO who is now 96 years of age. Gurtie Watkins, Gordon Schell, Glen Joseph Schell, Alfred “Lee” Schell and Robert Schell all predeceased him.

Boyd and “Dee” were avid bowlers and Boyd bowled a 300 game at a tournament in another city. They were in numerous leagues over the years at Hillcrest Bowl and then Royal Lanes. They enjoyed each other’s company as well as the company of family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital  501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Ray C. Newell

Funeral services for Ray C. Newell, 96, Lawrence, will be 2 pm, Friday, November 5, 2021, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. A visitation will be Thursday, November 4, 2021, from 6-7 pm.

Ray passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born December 24, 1924, in Ozawkie, the son of Carl “Shorty” Henry Newell and Mary “Liz” Elizabeth (Ray) Newell. He completed his diploma from the Lawrence Public Schools after serving in the US Army from 1943-1945.

Ray worked in multiple fields but was particularly proud of the time he spent as a book binder at the Lawrence Journal World and Lawrence Printing Service, where he was foreman. He would often mention with pride how he worked as a book binder for 53-years.

He was a devoted member of the First Assembly of God Church (now 360 Church) all his life. He was an usher, church bus driver, Sunday school super intendent, and devoted board member. He never missed a Sunday if he could help it.

Ray married Dorthey J. Anderson on June 17, 1951, in Lawrence, at First Assembly of God Church. She preceded him in death December 18, 2003, after 52 wonderful years of marriage.

His survivors include four daughters, Sondra Banta (Chris), of Lee Summit, and Darla Jacobs, Denise Posey (James), and Karla Westphal (Matt), all of Lawrence; 6 grandsons, Jason Jacob (Jennifer), Matt Jacobs, Benji Jacobs, and Taylor Posey, all of Lawrence, Michael Jacobs (Stephanie), of Cameron, and Andrew Banta (Laura) stationed at an Air Force base in Japan; 3 granddaughters Heather Bazen (Jason), of Phoenix, Emily Jacobs, of Kansas City, and Megan Posey of Tulsa; 15 great grandchildren; and 1 great, great grandchild.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother Benjamin W Newell, and sister Katherine M Percifield.

He was a farm boy who enjoyed country music, vegetable gardening, playing guitar, and cowboy movies. His other passions included collecting cars, NASCAR, WWE, dad jokes, and going to McDonalds to have coffee with the gang. A proud sand rat, Ray lived in North Lawrence for over 50 years. Ray was a devoted family man who enjoyed family trips to Branson every year from 1964-2000. He loved Silver Dollar City, his country music shows, and frog legs. He loved his role as a father, grandfather, and great grandfather- he never missed birthdays, holidays or major events within his families lives if he could help it.

Laurel Duaine Lindholm

Laurel Duaine Lindholm, 100, died October 26, 2021 at LMH Health in Lawrence, Kansas. Visitation will be Monday evening, November 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Worden Cornerstone Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 2nd also at the Worden Cornerstone Church where Duaine has been an active member since 1940. Burial will follow service at the Worden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Worden Cornerstone Church Youth Group or Douglas County 4-H Foundation. Duaine was born April 23, 1921 at Windom, Kansas. The son of Walter Victor Lindholm and Sarah Matilda (Hubenett) Lindholm. He grew up in rural Windom, Kansas. He attended Stone Corral Elementary School and graduated from Windom High School with the class of 1939. He moved with his family to rural Baldwin City in 1940.

Duaine was united in marriage to Donalda Mae (Donnie) Hobson February 24, 1947 at what is now known as Worden Cornerstone Church. They had just reached their 73rd wedding anniversary on February 24, 2020, just 3 days before Donnie’s death.

As a young man, Duaine worked for the railroad and as a mechanic for the John Deere business in Ottawa, Kansas. He also farmed and raised livestock with his father. In 1956 he began his career at Farmland Industries in Lawrence, Kansas, retiring in 1983. Duaine and Donnie were always supportive of their daughters and attended all of their school and 4-H activities.

Duaine is survived by two daughters, Terrie Lindholm and Connie Taylor, both of Baldwin City; five grandchildren: Tina Caruthers, Vicki Mignot (Jim), Jody Merritt (Jerod), Crystal Allison (Barrett), and Luke Taylor; ten great grandchildren: Kaden Keith, Chase and Nathan Mignot, Brett and Ace Courtney, Oliver Merritt; and Trenton, Bergen, Marcus and Kayla Allison; one great-great grandson: Caleb Courtney; sister, Patricia Gilges of Baldwin City; and many, many nieces and nephews, who lovingly referred to him as “Uncle Bud.”

Duaine was preceded in death by his wife, parents; sister: Elaine Hoopes; and daughter: Cheryl Spurlock. Duaine enjoyed 38 years of retirement, especially watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in various school and sporting activities when he and Donnie were able to go. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Judy Horton

Services for Judy Anne Horton, 82, Lawrence, Kansas, will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Horton died Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at Monterey Village in Lawrence.

She was born October 9, 1939, in Marceline, Missouri, the daughter of Ralph Seymour and Virginia Ruth Marlow Scott. She graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1957.

Mrs. Horton retired from Hallmark Cards in Lawrence and later became the administrator at the Pattonsburg Senior Center in Pattonsburg, Missouri.

She enjoyed genealogy, sewing, attending the Pattonsburg Methodist Church, serving on the Pattonsburg City Council, spending time with family and helping others.

She married Ronald O. Horton on March 2, 1958. He died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Elzea and husband Mark of Lawrence; daughter-in-law Tamera Horton of Lee’s Summit, MO; grandchildren, Patrick Elzea and wife Amy, Amber Lenoir and husband Patrick, Evan Elzea, Leah Horton, Eric Elzea, and Ashlyn Brewer and husband Nicholas; brother Ralph “Butch” Scott and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Ronald Roger Horton, grandson, Joseph Tyler Horton and sisters Laura Mae Garrison and Edna Mick.

James Richard Topping

James Richard Topping, age 95, passed away peacefully in his home in Bloomington, Minnesota on October 17th, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.
  Jim Topping was born and raised May 8, 1926, in Lawrence, Kansas. He served as an Air Force Pilot in the Korean War and moved to Bloomington, Minnesota in 1960 to raise his family and start his career with North Central Airlines and Republic Airlines as a pilot (Captain) which lasted 26 years.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Ruth Topping of 64 years. They were married on June 3, 1950.

He is survived by his 4 daughters; Ann Topping, Melinda “Lin” Topping (Keith Lowinske), Kathleen Ryan and Darcy (David) Neal; in addition to 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, Sister in-law Beverly Olson and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas.

Rozelia Perkins

A homegoing service for Rozelia Perkins, 92, Lawrence, will be at 10 am Friday at Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Eric Galbreath and Delmar White officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 pm at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Ms. Perkins passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at her home, surrounded by loving family.

She was born November 6, 1928, in Little Rock, Arkansas, the daughter of James and Mary Rucker Robinson. She was raised in Indianola, Mississippi and moved to St. Louis when she was 17, graduating from high school in St. Louis and attending a year of college there. She moved to Emporia in 1976 where she worked as a nurse’s aide and a dishwasher. Rozelia was a member of Freewill Holiness Church in Emporia, where she played the piano. She moved to Lawrence in 2010 and attended Ninth Street Baptist Church.

She married Sharky Perkins who preceded her in death, as did eleven siblings and two children, Rose Perkins and Lewis Perkins. She is survived by three daughters, Sondra McWilliams, Texarkana, Tex., Darlene McCallister, Lawrence, and Earlene Thomas, Lawrence; grandchildren Gerald Bailey, Roy Bailey, Dennis Bailey, Diondre McCallister, Latrice Thomas, Lavel Thomas, Dariscia Rose McCallister, De’mira Perkins, Lakeisha Thomas, Mercedes Perkins, and Jalissa Perkins; and a host of great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and many friends.

Friends may call from noon to 8 pm Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6-7 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, memo: Rozelia Perkins, to help with funeral expenses.

Cheryl E. Wonnell

Cheryl E. Wonnell, 74, Lawrence, died Sunday, October 17, 2021. Cheryl was born June 28, 1947 in Lawrence, the daughter of Clarence P. and Lucy E. Kell Seaver. She was a 1965 graduate of McLouth High School. She earned Certified Advertising Specialist credentials in 1994 and qualified for her Masters Advertising Specialist in 2007. Cheryl was “Mom” to hundreds of kids from KU. She worked the athlete pass gate for KU for 28 years. She worked at several jobs prior to purchasing her own business , including Commerce Bank, Kansas Geological Survey, the Home Center in Oskaloosa, the Oskaloosa Independent, KLJR Radio and SACS in Eudora. She was the President and Owner of Creative Advertising Inc, a promotional products company since 1987. She represented C&S Direct Advertising, Forrester Smith and she retired while representing Geiger, Inc. Cheryl was active with the KU Baseball team since 1992, serving as the unofficial “Team Mom” and Team Chaplain for three years. She was member of Lawrence Heights Christian Church, KU Baseball Diamond Club, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and the Promotional Products Association. Her favorite Bible verse was Phillippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me”. She loved her family and friends. Her hobbies were attending KU Baseball games, woodworking and gardening.

She is survived by her daughter, Micki and husband, Jamie Prager, and their two children, Taylor and Tyler Prager, her son, Rob and his wife, Sarah Wonnell and their four children, Josiah, Micah, Gavin and Zeke Wonnell. Cheryl was married to Jim Wonnell in 1965, they divorced in 1983.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 AM, Monday, October 25, 2021 at McLouth United Methodist Church. Burial will be at McLouth Cemetery. Henry Lana

Funeral services for Henry Lana, 95, Lawrence, will be 10am Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Lana died Saturday, October 16, 2021, at LMH Health in Lawrence.

He was born July 15, 1926, in Edmond, Oklahoma, the son of Jerry and Antonia Dolezal Lana. He graduated high school in Stillwell, Oklahoma in 1945.

Mr. Lana served in the United States Army during World War II and worked in construction as a carpenter in the Carpenter’s Union Local 1492.  He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, coin collecting, and being outdoors.

He married Zona Spillman on February 27, 1954, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  They later divorced.  He married Veronica Rae “Ronnie” Shastid on September 29, 1979, she died in 2013.

Survivors include sons, Henry Alan Lana and wife Heather of Billings, Montana, Larry Wayne Lana and wife Janet of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; daughter, Judy Kay Denny and husband Mark of Lawrence; stepdaughter, Rhonda J. Morrison and husband Brent of Lawrence, Kansas; stepson, Cris Chaffin and wife Lea of Lawrence, Kansas; sister, Lydia Wooten of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandchildren; and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Donna Carol Scott; brothers, Joe Lana, Charley Lana, Bert Lana; sisters, Mary Cook, Martha Yancey, and Blanch Blatz.

Friends may call from noon to 8pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
