Martha Ann ‘Marty’ Learned

Graveside services for Martha Ann ‘Marty’ Learned, 87, Lawrence, will be at 2:15 pm Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Peter A. Luckey officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, and will then process to the cemetery. Marty passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Lawrence, the daughter of Robert E. Sr. and Georgia Ann Hanson Learned. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School, and later attended the University of Kansas. She was an accountant for Allen Press for 47 years. She enjoyed pets, especially her dog Dutchess.

Survivors include two brothers, George R. Learned, M.D., Lawrence, and Robert E. Learned Jr. and wife Iona, Manhattan; two sisters-in-law, Marge Learned, Biloxi, Miss., and Dixie Learned, Wichita; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Edmund, and Col. Albert Learned.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Sue Reeder, Kathleen Womack, and Cassidy Womack for their kindness and care of both Martha and Dutchess.

Lois A. Reeves

Lois A. Reeves (68) died Thursday May 8th at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center where she had been residing following a long residence in Lawrence. Lois was born in Lawrence June 25, 1945, and she graduated from Lawrence High School in 1963. Her parents were Edward C. Beal and Eva J. Beal Garrett. Lois’s older brother, Roger J. Beal, of Riverdale, UT died in 2009. Lois lived in Corpus Christi, TX from 1949 until 1961. She married David P. Truhe, and they had two children, Suzanne Marie (1968-2013), and her younger brother John D. Truhe (44) while living in Osawatomie, KS. Lois later worked in food service in Lawrence, and married Edward Lee Reeves, Jr. in 1990. Lois greatly enjoyed a wide variety of music. She was prolific and generous with her crochet projects, and had a rich sense of humor. She also cared deeply for her cockatiel, Sammy (30). Lois was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lawrence. Rev. Matt Sturtevant will conduct a graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery 11:00 Friday May 16th.

Roma L. Kennedy

A Celebration of Life for Roma L. Kennedy, 90, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Friday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Dennis Chadwick officiating. A private family burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy died Monday, May 12, 2014, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehab in Baldwin City.

She was born May 15. 1923, in Lawrence, the daughter of Rollie and Alice Whitaker Laster. She attended Lawrence schools, and worked as a bookkeeper at Lawrence Sanitary, Weaver’s, and Lawrence Freight Line.  Roma and her husband John owned and operated the Chief Lunch. Roma was a member of the First Christian Church. She was also a member of various Masonic organizations, including Order of the Eastern Star, Beauceant, and Worthy Past High Priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem  She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, cooking, leading various organizations, and spending time with her family.

She married John Leslie Kennedy on Nov. 29, 1939, in Lawrence.  He preceded her in death in 1995.  Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Moore and husband Don, Canton, Ga., and Shirley Goff and husband Gary, Gold Canyon, Ariz.; a sister, Beverly O’Mohundro, Denver, Colo; three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 8 pm Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6-7 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Grace Hospice or First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

 

James G. Hunter M.D.

James G. Hunter, M.D. passed away at age 64, on Saturday May 10, 2014 after a long illness.  He leaves behind his wife of 43 years Cheryl, daughter Emily, grandson Hunter, brother, William J. Hunter Jr. and wife Jennifer, niece and nephews, Amy, Matthew, and Nathan. 

Dr. Hunter was born October 14, 1949, in Champaign Ill., the son of William and Joan Hunter.  He earned his MD from LSU Medical School and then entered active duty in the US Army.  He completed his residency in adult psychiatry and fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and was board certified in both.   He had a varied and illustrious military career, serving in various clinical staff and academic positions both at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Frankfurt Germany.  After leaving active duty he returned to service during Operation Desert Storm and served as Commander of a medical detachment responsible for the treatment of the psychiatric needs of the US forces stationed in the war zone.   He earned numerous awards for his service and retired from active duty as a Colonel.  

His civilian career was equally varied and successful.   Dr. Hunter entered private practice of child, adolescent and adult psychiatry in 1988.  He was the founder of Midwest Psychiatric Clinic, a multi-specialty outpatient clinic. He served as Medical Director of the Kansas Institute of Overland Park and Olathe and of the Menninger Psychiatric Units at Providence Medical Center.   Dr. Hunter served as past President of the Greater Kansas City Regional Council in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and was a member of several pharmaceutical advisory boards and often lectured both locally and nationally on the latest advances in psychopharmacology.  

Throughout his career both military and civilian, Dr. Hunter was passionate about delivering the highest quality psychiatric services to his patients.  Despite a long and debilitating illness he was attending to his patients up until the day he passed away.  He considered helping others to be his mission and he was faithful to that calling.

Dr. Hunter was a world traveler.  He loved fishing, watching movies, discussing politics, and cheering LSU to victory.   He converted to the Catholic Church later in life and was greatly influenced by the writings of Mother Theresa.  He sought to be a source of blessing to others.  

A funeral mass will take place at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Kentucky St., Lawrence, Kansas on Tuesday, 3 June, 2014 at 2pm.  The family will receive visitors at 1pm at the church.   Interment of ashes will take place at a later date in Shreveport, LA.  

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. John the Evangelist Church for care of the poor.

Clifford Edward Henson

Funeral services for Clifford Edward Henson, 84, formerly of Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with Pastor Mike Vernon officiating.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. He passed away May 6, 2014, in Aransas Pass, TX.

Clifford was born December 21, 1929 in Garden City, Missouri. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1948. He worked at Lawrence Laundry & Dry Cleaners right out of high school where he met his wife of 64 years, Nola Mae Schweitzberger. He also worked at Denver Laundry & Dry Cleaners. Later in life he worked & retired from ConAgra in Denver, Colorado. Upon retiring, they became “snowbirds” in Aransas Pass, Texas full time, where he was able to enjoy his passion for fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Nola, daughters Debra Lowrey of Denver, CO,  Dianne Greene of Knotts Island, NC, Denise Dunlap of Bennett, CO, and Danine Ehn of Greeley, CO; a son, David Henson of Phoenix, AZ; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Rietzel of Bonner Springs, KS; and a brother, Wilbur Henson of Tonganoxie, KS.

The family will receive friends from 1 pm until service time Friday. The casket will remain closed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to River City Hospice of Alice, TX, or the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

 

Kevin C. Brock

A Celebration of Life service for Kevin Charles Brock, 64, Lawrence, will be 5-7 pm Friday May 16, 2014, at Johnny’s Tavern in North Lawrence.

Kevin died Saturday, May 10, 2014, at his home.

He was born November 8, 1949, in Des Moines, IA, the son of Charles J. and Georgetta M. Wiley Brock. He attended high school in West Des Moines.

Kevin was a hard working man. He worked most of his life in construction. He was self employed, building houses and was a Bridge Carpenter. He retired from the City of Lawrence Street Department, as a Supervisor after 26 years of work.

Kevin was an organized, self motivated, independent man. These traits helped him do very well as a supervisor. He also had a very strong love for animals. In his retirement, Kevin enjoyed gardening, watching old TV shows and playing computer games. After retirement Kevin enjoyed spending time in his condo in Florida.

He married Linda L. Kerns on January 6, 1975, in Adel, IA. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, two brothers Kim and Kent Brock, both of Boynton Beach FL., three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Corieta Jo Davis

A Celebration of Life for Corieta Jo Davis, 72, Eudora, will be at 1 pm Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, with the Rev. Bob Giffin officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service. Corieta died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 17, 1941, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Melvin and Verlie Bennett. She graduated from Syracuse, Kan. High School, and later earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Louisiana State University.  She was a speech pathologist, and had worked in the public schools in Baton Rouge, La., at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Hazard, Ky., and most recently at Menorah Medical Center, from which she retired in 2011.  She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, travel, reading, and spending time with family.

She married John M. Davis in 1957 in Sterling, Kan.  He preceded her in death, as did a brother, Kent Toot, and a sister, Sherri Malleck.  Survivors include three sons, Ken Melvin Davis, Scott City, Kan., Randall Eugene Davis (Missy), Biloxi, Miss., and Scott Alan Davis (Leslie), Atlanta; a daughter, Becky Sasse (Carl), Eudora; her parents, Syracuse, Kan; three brothers, Fred Toot (Joan), Baldwin City, Mike Bennett (Kim), Lawrence, and Steve Bennett (Toni), Syracuse; a sister, Ronita Maynard, Austin, Tex.; six grandchildren, Diane Immer, and Brett, Keaton, Emma, Claire, and Anna Davis; and four great grandchildren, Charlotte and Max Immer, and Mackenzie and Meyer Davis.

Barbara C. Vesco

Barbara Vesco, 68, passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Michael J. Vesco, two sons, Michael P. Vesco and David Vesco, and a daughter, Kristina (Brian) McNish.

At Barbara’s request, the funeral and burial will be a private event for immediate family and close friends.

Wilma M. Segura

Wilma M. Segura, 70, passed away on May 2, 2014 at her home in Neodesha, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents Roy Bridges and Gladys (Fix) Bridges.

Wilma was the middle child of three daughters, all of them lively and ambitious, raised in Rockville, MO and graduated from Appleton City High School in 1961. As a young adult attending business school, Wilma enjoyed several modeling opportunities for local department store advertisements, and was later hired as an editor for a newspaper out of Kansas City, KS. Her zest for life afforded her many different career opportunities throughout Missouri and Kansas, but eventually led her back to Business-Administrative work where she held jobs at Sallie Mae, Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) and the University of Kansas.

She is survived by two sisters: Mina Olson (Walt) of Neodesha, KS and RuthAnn Wright of Shawnee, KS; four children: Ryan Kahn of Kansas City, MO; Jessica Zeff (Ian Blunt) of London, England; Julie (Segura) Bowers (Joseph) of Phoenix, AZ; and Shelley (Segura) Thomas (Ronald) of Okinawa, Japan; and 8 grandchildren: Lucas and Ava Kahn, Owen, Elliott, and Isaac Zeff, Sienna Segura-Brown and Brooklyn Bowers, and Cameron Thomas, and countless life-long friends and extended family.

Rumsey-Yost of Lawrence, KS handled all arrangements.

Mayme Catherine Freeman

Memorial services for Mayme Catherine Freeman, 74, Tonganoxie, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mrs. Freeman died Saturday, May 3, 2014, at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

She was born July 4, 1939, in Brixey, Missouri, the daughter of Arthur Loren and Martha Elizabeth Parker Brown.

Mrs. Freeman worked at Hallmark Cards for 21 years as a machine operator. She enjoyed spending time with family, crossword puzzles, word games, being outdoors, bird watching, and attending church.

She married Walter Jackson Freeman July 19, 1957 in Washington. He died March 3rd of 2000.

Survivors include 10 children, step son Tarry Freeman of Alamo, TX, step daughter Aneita Burton of Lawrence, Vance Freeman of Lawrence, Dean Freeman of Lawrence, Alfred Freeman of McLouth, Wanda Salierno of Lawrence, Leonard Freeman of Lawrence, Mary Besser of Oskaloosa, Bill Freeman of Ottawa, and Angie Freeman of Lawrence; sisters, Jackie Van Hoy of Richmond. Missouri, Myrtle Lou Moon of Galena, MO, and Artie Anderson of Hollister, MO; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, William Allen White, Chester L. White, Wayne B. White, Elbert R. White; sisters, Martha Alma Loftis, and Hazel V. Pitchford.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.
