Ronald Edward Bishop

A Celebration of Life for Ronald Edward Bishop, 75, Lawrence, will be announced at a later date by Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory. Ron passed away Thursday, December 9, 2021, at his home.

He was born Arril 23, 1946, in Lawrence, the son of Edward and Marguerite Harris Bishop. He graduated high school and later earned a bachelor’s degree. After serving in the United States Navy, Ron work as a photojournalist.

William Lee “Bill” Lawrence

William “Bill” Lawrence, 71, Lawrence, Kansas, passed away at home on December 25, 2021.

He was born December 7, 1950, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the son of Hugh Lawrence and Brodine Langston Lawrence.

Bill graduated from Washington High School, Kansas City, Kansas, in 1968 and later earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968 and served in Vietnam.  After being honorably discharged in 1972, he began his 33-year career in the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 2005 as the Manager of Main Post Office in Lawrence, Kansas

He married Bonnie Lutjemeier on November 28, 1968, and they had two sons, David and Shane.  They later divorced, and on February 3, 1996, he married Linda Bolton Stine, who survives of the home.

Other survivors include son David and his wife Barbara and their daughters Morgan and her fiancé Colton Wichtner and Samantha, all in Lawrence, son Shane and Shane’s daughter Shayla, stepson Jeff Stine, and his wife Tracy and their son Ethan in Pennsylvania, stepdaughter Kristen Stine in Lawrence and sister Nancy Reed of Easton, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Patty Lawrence and Bonnie Stimac, and his brother Bobby Lawrence.

Bill always enjoyed an early golf game, a trip to the ocean, and cooking for others. But what he loved most of all was being a grandpa.  Whether splashing around in the pool or dancing his silly Grandpa dance, his grandchildren were the joy of his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the Union Pacific Depot at 402 N 2nd St, Lawrence, Ks, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Leah Hime

Leah Hime passed away December 22, 2021 at the age of age 62. She was born on February 15, 1959 to Sharon Yeahquo and Lawrence Hime.

Leah loved to travel and share her experiences. She was an avid KC Chiefs football and Kansas Jayhawk basketball fan. When she wasn’t watching her favorite teams she enjoyed cooking, gardening, crafting and reading. She most enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Leah was preceded in death by her father Larry, her best friend and brother Brad, her beloved son Bo and daughter Megan. Survivors include her mother Sharon and daughter Kasi.  Five grandchildren (Ashlea, Tyler, Parker, Ayden, Alexander) and great grandson (Jack).

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 8th from 5-8 at the Eudora Community Center.

Richard L. ‘Dick’ George

Graveside services for Richard L. ‘Dick’ George, 90, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery with Pastor Todd Seifert officiating. Dick passed away peacefully at his home on Wed., Dec. 22, 2021, with his companion of 8 years, Judy Gragg beside him.

Dick was born June 29, 1931, in Irving, Kansas.  A small town that is no longer there.  He was the only child of Leo and Alice Youngquist George. In his earlier years, Dick went to Kansas State University.  Not attending long, he was then enlisted to the Army where he was trained and served as a heavy artillery instructor.  During that time, Dick married the love of his life, Betty Webster.

After the Army, Dick and Betty moved back to Lawrence Kansas and Dick began his career at the Lawrence Paper Company where he stayed until his retirement in 1992.  Throughout the years, Dick and Betty also had rental property.

Dick, being of Christian faith belonged and was an active member to the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and also the Kansas Freemasons until his death. He was also a life long member of the American Legion.

Once retired Dick pursued his interests.  He and Betty loved to travel to different states and areas searching for the best golf courses.  During the winter months, they would reside in Florida playing golf, escaping the cold weather, and listening to dixieland music.

Dick will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his love for his family.  As a father, grandfather, and a great grandfather, he was an ideal role model.  He always disciplined with instruction and stressed to always put oneself in the other shoes for perspective.  He always showed his love and always gave sound advice.

Richard L. “Dick” George, was a hard worker and a genuinely caring and compassionate Christian gentleman.  We will dearly miss him.

Dick was preceded by death of his parents and his wife (Betty) of 60 years of marriage. Survivors include a companion, Judy Gragg in Lawrence, one son Steven L. George (Eva) and one daughter Lynnie Kendrick (David).  Four grandchildren (Tyler Kendrick, Samuel Kendrick, Joshua George and Patricia Orton) and five great grandchildren (Leo and Noah Kendrick, Marshall and Maggie George, Madison Orton).  All family members resides in Lawrence, Kansas.

 

David Sheridan Holmes

David Sheridan Holmes, 82, Westwood Hills, died Monday, December 20, 2021, at Brookdale Senior Living, in Overland Park, Kansas.

Dr. Holmes was born June 9, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Conrad and Margaret Lambrecht Holmes.  After high school he went to Northern Illinois University and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1961.  He completed his graduate work at Northwestern University, where he received a master’s degree in 1963 and a Ph.D. in 1965.  Dr. Holmes did his clinical psychology internship at Harvard University Medical School from 1963-1964.

After years of academic life at Northwestern University and the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Holmes took a research position at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey, but soon realized that he missed teaching.  In 1971, Dr. Holmes accepted a position at the University of Kansas in the Department of Psychology and, in a career that spanned over 43 years, taught thousands of students.  He was known as a passionate teacher who was deeply dedicated to his students.  He shared that enthusiasm not only in the classroom but when students would talk with him outside of class.  He loved sharing with undergraduate students the basic foundations of psychology as well as exciting new findings and he was supportive as a mentor to students pursuing their Ph.D. research.  He won many awards, both local and national, for his teaching, including the prestigious University of Kansas Chancellors Club Teaching Professorship.  He was equally acclaimed for his best-selling textbooks and peer-reviewed research publications, which numbered more than 120.

David led an active life that included regular exercise, especially swimming and running.  In addition to psychology, David had many other interests.  He appreciated art and looked forward to visiting the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art as well as art fairs in the Kansas City area.  Music and the theatre were important to him and he delighted in going to the symphony and to other performances at the Kauffman Center.  David also loved to read and would eagerly pick up a new book or re-read an old favorite and he enjoyed cooking and was especially proud of his homemade pasta.  His interest in architecture inspired his home remodeling and many woodworking projects.

Survivors include his close friend, Kristin Scott of Lawrence; one sister, Ardith Kanabay and husband Bob of Hinsdale, Illinois; five nieces and a nephew, Jodie, Melinda, Stacey, Sabrina, Sharon, and Robert; colleague and long-time friend, Tom Burish and wife Pam of Granger, Indiana; former students, Rochelle Harris, Dave Bennett, Abbie Ellicott, Randy Frost, Barb Reinke, and many others too numerous to name and whom he appreciated greatly; and many colleagues and friends.

Dr. Holmes is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Kelly; and one brother, Terry.

Velma Rose (Pine) Skinner

Mrs. Velma Rose Skinner (Pine) passed away Monday at the age of age 92 at Pioneer Ridge ALF in Lawrence, Kansas. Velma was born on Christmas Day in 1928 to Roscoe and Kate Pine on their farm in North Lawrence. As a daughter of the depression, she developed a sense of practicality and thriftiness that would serve her well throughout her life. She graduated from Liberty (Lawrence) High School in 1946. Soon thereafter she met her future husband William (Bill) Davis Dillon. In 1948, they were married in La Port, Texas. In 1958, she and her growing family moved back to Lawrence. After Bill’s accidental death in 1966, she worked for Allied Signal and raised three sons as a single mother until she married Connie Monroe Skinner in 1970. Connie and Velma enjoyed 47 years of marriage until his death in 2018. Velma was an avid bowler.

Velma is survived by her three sons Charles, Larry and Lonnie (Ross) Dillon and their wives, as well as six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Ascend Hospice in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044. Online condolences may be posted on rumsey-yost.com. Friends and family members may attend the visitation on Wednesday December 29th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. The funeral service, officiated by Chaplain Paul Reed, follows at 11:00 a.m.

Elizabeth Ann Kellison

Elizabeth (Beth) A. Berry Kellison passed away on Thursday, December 16th, 2021, in Lawrence Kansas. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, January 22nd, 2022, at Highland Park Cemetery, 2391-2399 E. Normal Avenue, Kirksville, Missouri.

Beth was born January 17th, 1944 in Kirksville, Missouri, and graduated from Kirksville High School in 1961. She grew up in Nind, Missouri, and had lived in Lawrence, Kansas since 1975.

For over 30 years of her working career, she was an office manager for K-Mart, retiring from the company in 2012.

Beth married Gary Dean Kellison on December 22nd, 1961. They began their marriage while Gary served in the US Army, stationed in various locations in Germany and around the U.S. Gary preceded her in death in 2005.

Beth is also preceded in death by her parents, Azle and Marie Berry, Nind, Mo, two brothers, Jim and Ed Berry of Kirksville, Missouri, and one granddaughter, Jessica Kellison. She is survived by one brother, Spencer (Connie) Berry of Kirksville, Missouri. She is also survived by three sons, Brian (Cheryl) of Lawrence Kansas, Gary (Terry) of Kingsville, Missouri, and Jimmy of Lawrence Kansas. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and multiple nieces and nephews.

Beth was everyone’s friend, a beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. The world was a better place with Beth in it. Her kindness, love, and ferocious loyalty will be greatly missed.
